Jon Hamm (Mad Men) has joined the cast for the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, says the Hollywood Reporter. The actor will be starring alongside headliners Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in this update of the 1951 Robert Wise-helmed classic. Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) is handling the directing duties, based on a screenplay from David Scarpa. Erwin Stoff and Paul Harris Boardman are producing the project for 20th Century Fox. The trade says that shooting began in Vancouver on December 12 and Hamm began shooting his scenes on Tuesday.

Hamm will play Dr. Granier, a NASA official who recruits Helen (Connelly) for the scientific team investigating an alien's arrival on Earth. Reeves plays Klaatu, the alien who has a simple message: Live in peace or be destroyed.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL will hit theaters Dec. 12, 2008.

hmm what can I say. oh yeah LEAVE THIS FILM ALONE HOLLYWOOD YOU UNORIGINAL FUCKS.

If you HAVE to do it as you have no good ideas left at all - Keanu "I can't act, whoa" Reeves is terrible idea. Exhuming Cecil B deMille's corpse and dry humping it for 3 hours and putting that on screen would be a better idea.

Dry-humping Cecil, hilarious.

Keanu's message to Earth: Be Excellent to Each Other. Party On Dudes!!!

How is it that Keanu Reeves best performance is still as Ted "Theodore"Logan in those Bill and Ted movies?

Come on, my man Keanu Reeves, playing an unemotional alien? Is it really that hard of a leap?

Fifty-six years right now since this film was made. I have no problem with them remaking this. Most people under 35 probably have never seen the original so this will be new to most.

I'm sorry, but the studio making this remake, needs to RECAST...RALPH FIENNES should replace Keanu!

Ralph - I agree 100%.

And jpp -- I recall that a while back, Keanu was asked his biggest fear which was that his tombstone would read "He played Ted." :D

I always liked the original film. There were rumors about remaking it as far back as the late 1970's.
This has the potential to be a great new film, if the right people were involved. I always imagined Spielberg directing and Tom Hanks playing Klaatu.
Reeves as Klaatu is ridiculous. I think Hamm as Klaatu is a better fit.

I think they missed the boat not making this a "retro" styled film as well. They should of gave it a 1950's look.

I like Keanu...I don't think he is as bad as everyone says,,,,he was great in Constantine and A Scanner Darkly...yes, there are better actors out there, but I think he will do fine...and to Darkedge,,,,talk about unoriginal,,,,bashing the idea of a remake? Did you come up with that one all on your own? Let it go man!!
