HANNAH MONTANA Tunes Up Record Debut

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Sunday, February 03, 2008

A movie which is showing in only 683 theaters wins the box office report? It seems so and it’s a shocker no matter how large a following the Disney show Hannah Montana reportedly has…The home of Mickey Mouse launched a new theatrical vehicle, based around their hit television series with Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, and it has debuted in 1st place for this weekend by pulling in 29.0 million. The real kicker is the film only showing up in 683 theaters in this debut so it makes for an astounding-record-breaking $42,459 per showing. These kinds of numbers have it now as #1 on the All-Time Wide Opening Averages list, taking the previous record of $35,540 with last year’s Spider-Man 3.

Following in 2nd place is Lionsgate’s remake of The Eye, starring Jessica Alba in the title role. The film debuted with 13.0 mil in change by showing on 2,436 theaters across the nation. This makes for an average per showing rate of $5,336. There has been no budget listed for the remake of the 2002 Chinese-based film so we can’t tell the exact damages, but it seems clear it could have done better numbers.

Fox’s 27 Dresses landed in 3rd place last weekend and it returns in the same spot for this report. The already-profitable venture pulled in another 8.4 mil in its third week of release while appearing in 2,976 theaters. This has its average at $2,822. Fox has listed its budget at only 30 million and it has pulled in 57.1 mil, which points to a clear alternative choice for couples against some heavy hitting genre films.

Fox Searchlight’s Juno actually moved up 3 spots in its ninth week of release, once again banking on good word-of-mouth and award nominations. The film pulled in another 7.4 mil this weekend while showing in 2,475 theaters. Over the course of its release, it has grabbed 110.2 million in domestic receipts

Following in 5th place is last week’s winner, Meet the Spartans, which means Fox owns the 3-5 spots consecutively. The spoof pulled in another 7.1 mil while appearing in 2,643 theaters, which has its average at $2,695. No budget has been listed but it has pulled in 28.3 mil in 10 days of theatrical release.

Rambo has already dropped to 6th place in its second week of release, pulling in 7.0 million for Lionsgate.  The film, whose budget is listed at 50 mil, has pulled in 29.7 mil in 10 days. The fourth installment of the hero has begun its foreign release (in a very limited fashion) with 3.7 mil, which has its worldwide gross at 33.5 mil so far…

Dropping only one place in its sixth week of release is WB’s The Bucket List. The Jack Nicholson/Morgan Freeman vehicle pulled in another 6.8 mil in its 2,915 houses across the country. The studio has listed its budget at only 45 mil and to date, it has pulled in 67.6 mil domestically.

Next up in 8th place for the report is the returning thriller Untraceable with 5.4 mil in box office receipts. The Diane-Lane vehicle is currently showing in 2,368 theaters, which has this week’s average at $2,280 per showing. As usual, Sony-Screen Gems has kept its budget low at only 35 mil and it has pulled in 19.4 mil in its first two weekends. It will break even by the end of its theatrical run and make profits in its eventual DVD release.

Cloverfield continued its downward spiral into 9th place this weekend by only pulling in 4.9 mil in its third week of release. The JJ Abrams-produced monster movie from Paramount is still showing in 3,007 (the highest amount of the top 10), which means it had a very low average of $1,629 per showing. Despite the downward spiral, the film is already a very profitable venture for the studio and already has development for a sequel under works. It had a budget of only 25 mil and has grossed 71.9 mil here and another 15.0 overseas, marking for a worldwide gross of 87.0 mil.

Taking the final spot is the re-release of the critically acclaimed There Will Be Blood, which has racked up plenty of award nominations (and wins). In its 6th week of release, it pulled in another 4.7 million in receipts. The film is showing in 1,507 theaters so this points to an average rate of $3,159, the third highest for the weekend. As with most critically acclaimed movies, the total gross hardly reflects its success with critics. It has only 21.1 mil domestically.

Caught Rambo this weekend, it was better than I though it would be. I recommend seeing it if you wanna see some real action and violence. I saw somewhere there might be talk of another sequel.
Anyway, I went to an early Saturday showing to see it and the lady (with 2 kids) in front of me asked for Hanah Montana tickets and she was very disappointed when they told her a) the movie was sold out for the day and they only had 9 o clock showing on Sunday available. and b) the tickets were $15 per person.
If that was true across the 600 plus screens were it was showing then i'm not surprised it landed at #1.

Well, it goes to show you that despite making big money in its first week of release, Cloverfield was more or less not well liked as the studio or the public thought it was because movie-goers had a hard time attempting to give it a chance trying to keep up with the "JUMPY RAPID CAMERA ROUTINE". Plus when its getting a bad rep for causing vertigo with its viewers, you're not gonna get alot of return visits. When you know a film is a big hit is when how well viewers come back for seconds after the first viewing or the first week of showing. Cloverfield since its first week nosedived twice big time because people are either puking in their seats trying to watch it or simply hate it because of the ending. Yes, people has hated the movie because of its ending. I went to see it twice and both times the crowd screamed in discontent about either how it was shot or how it ended. Not very encouraging especailly now that a sequel has been confirmed which was too obvious in the final 2 minutes. Word of advice to Paramount, JJ Abrams and company...notice the obvious flaw of Cloverfield and avoid it with the upcoming Cloverfield 2. As the old saying goes, people who fail to learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat it. As far as Hannah Montana goes, not my cup of tea but clearly Disney is hoping she stands out more positively than her predecessors, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan and the crazed squirrel-bit Britney Spears after tasting success.

I experienced the hanna montana mayhem this weekend. My theatre is one of the few theatres that is showing this movie. And its mind blowing witnessing how big this flick is. All the Friday and saturday shows sold out, including the late shows, and its was really annoying having to deal with parents who weren't able to buy tickets on time.. And it looks like today won't be any different, we have already sold out three shows. And Here's something else that is crazy, we are going through some horrible weather right now, and its SB sunday, but that doesn't seem to matter at all. This movie is still going strong...

I remember when the cost of a live concert was only $15. Not a movie of a concert.
Yes, I'm old. But my first concert was when I was in Eighth grade back in the eighties.

You gotta give credit to disney's marketing department. They were advertising hanna montana as showing only for one week.. Forcing people to catch the movie as soon as they could, now word has come down from them that they will extend it for two weeks

I know when that Hannah concert tour came to town it sold out immediately and tickets were going for thousands each from scalpers. So I guess the millions of fans that weren't able to go to the actual concert had to settle for this and the little girls are so in to this that it doesn't matter. Hannah is huge, you'll probably get a lot of repeat business I would guess. I'm still surprised at the numbers, wow.
Word of mouth probably hurt Cloverfield, even so it should end up well over 100mil worldwide before dvds and rentals.
Avp-R recently went over 120 mil worlwide. I wonder if that'll be enough to green light a sequel.
Juno and 27 Dresses continue to surprise me. Must be a lot of women going to the movies lately.

Yeah, I remeber, my first concert was Guns N' Roses back in '88 and that only cost me $20,,,,,this is crazy,,,,,I admit to watching some Disney channel,,,,I think That's So Raven is pretty funny, and sometimes, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,,,,,but I can not believe this movie blew up huge like this,,,but then again, only really going up against the Eye, it is not much of a surprise....on a totally random note, I watched Sunshine, AVP:R and The Kingdom today....and The Kingdom was the best by far...if you haven't seen it,,,,,,watch it,,,,totally amazing movie. Sunshine was very good also, but a little out there......AVP:R, was better than the first, but still not a great movie. I think that was more due to the acting than anytihng. I just can't wait for Jumper to come out,,,I will be there for that.

I knew cloverfield was gonna drop big time. And i still doubt it will make 100 million dollars domestically. And if paramount does indeed move forward with a sequel, i doubt the budget for this movie will be any bigger

I'm a dude and went to see Juno (with a girl) but it was a really good movie. It deserves the $$ and the award nominations.

But I can't believe Hannah got that much $$ on only 600 screens. Wow... but she is a good role model for kids compared to the horrible people that surround them these days.

I am a 3rd grade teacher and I know how these kids listen to and love some pretty hard core rap.. so I have no problem with some of them loving this girl.

hanso • Feb 03, 2008, 03:05pm •
Paramount should stay away from a Cloverfield sequel regardless of how much a profit the first film makes.
A second film will take away from the original take of this one and I doubt it will be making as much money as the original. The ad campaign won't be as effective a second time around.
Sometimes less is more.
