Another theatrical distribution snafu has occurred for Warner Bros. Pictures' highly-anticipated release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It seems the Warner Bros. decision to move the film's release from its original November 2008 debut to July 15th had some unexpected fallout for IMAX and their shareholders, says the Hollywood Reporter.

The new July opening overlaps with Imax's previous contract with Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, based on an agreement which has the film exclusively playing in IMAX theaters for a month because Michael Bay used IMAX camera technology for certain scenes with his production. Due to the contractual obligations, Harry Potter fans will have a two-week delay before they can enjoy the sixth Harry Potter film on the largest screens across the nation.

Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold says this development shouldn't be taken as more doom and gloom for the fans. The film will contain 12 minutes of 3-D footage that moviegoers can experience only through Imax, so that could cushion the blow.

"There will obviously be some consumers that choose to wait for the Imax version with its 3-D scenes or will choose to see it for a second time, but we no not believe this will be enough to offset the negative impact from the move," he said.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will still hit conventional theaters July 15, 2009.

I don't have IMAX in my town so no big deal for me anyway. I will go see it though...........

I was wondering when they would announce this officially? I worked on the IMAX version and figured this was coming. We were originally suppposed to do more of the film than what ended up being done.  I think when the WB pushed back the date, IMAX obviously saw the conflict with their Transformers release and cut back on the amount of the film that would be converted to 3D. Kinda sucks cuz there were some awesome scenes at the end of the film that looked awesome in 3D (mainly all the scenes in the cave). This move was obviously made to help offset the loss in box office they will undoubtedly take due to the delayed start. I love seeing films in IMAX even without 3D so I'll definitely still wait to see it.  Hopefully they make a lot with Transformers to cushion the hit they'll take with HP.  Transformers is going to look sick on IMAX, especially the scenes shot with their cameras like Dark Knight had.  I can't wait.

BOOO!!!!  2 weeks is plenty long for Transformers 2 to run it's course.

Heaven forbid the IMAX theaters split up the screening times for these films  Like show TF2 then HP6 followed by TF2 and then HP6 all in one day.

This news is fine by me!  I can see Harry Potter on any nice screen and enjoy it, but Transformers is MADE for the IMAX experience!  The bigger the bots, the better!

I don't know the technicalities of an I-Max but from what I've read it isn't easy to switch back and forth between films. That's why you almost always see a scheduled run on I-Max as opposed to regular screens which swith between films quickly and can adapt when the film's a hit or a bomb.

This will work out for them.  People go see the movie in the regular theater and then again in the imax two weeks later.

and diaz, what do you mean by "shot with their cameras"?  Aren't all movies shot with cameras?

I meant with IMAX cameras specifically.  I think Bay shot four sequences using them.  You can tell which because they fill the IMAX  screen instead of being in 16:9 aspect ratio.  They are also way sharper since they are in 4K resolution.

It was delayed because the gayness wasn't ready for IMAX.
