It was a magical weekend for Warner Bros. Pictures’ latest Hogwarts adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, with the film scoring $79.4 million over the weekend. The sixth movie in the successful franchise waved its box office wand in theaters by taking in an estimated $159.7 million during its first five days of release and outpacing the film’s predecessor, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, whose five-day tally came in at $139.7 million two years ago.
While the film’s opening domestic tally has it falling short of the $201 million mark earned by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, this latest Potter adventure did score the biggest five-day opening foreign launch of all-time by taking in $237 million overseas through its first Sunday.
The previous record holder was Disney's Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, which opened May 23, 2007 and drew $218.4 million in its first five days.
Through its first Sunday, “Prince” nearly hit the $400 worldwide mark with an overall tally of $396.6 million.
Following in 2nd place is Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The third animated adventure has continued pulling in strong steady numbers—domestic and foreign---in the first three weeks of release, adding another $17.7 million this weekend to its domestic cume of $152.0 million. But the nice domestic gross aside, it’s the film’s foreign gross which has some eye-opening numbers.
Over the course of its first 19 days, the latest Ice Age has pulled in $429.0 million in foreign cash. When combined the film has a worldwide mark of $581.0 million, the 2nd highest worldwide gross of 2009. The film reportedly cost only $90 million to produce. We previously thought The Hangover would be the most profitable release of the summer but it’s looking more and more likely that this one will overtake it.
Paramount and DreamWorks’ Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grabbed another $13.7 million for 3rd place this weekend, representing only a 43% drop from in its fourth weekend. The latest numbers has its domestic gross sitting at $363.8 million, with a comfortable lead over the other domestic earners of 2009. The sequel also has a foreign gross of $398.0 million and has the best yearly worldwide cume of $761.8 million.
It’s a very close race between 4th, 5th and 6th place with all three films ending up around the $8.3 mark. We’ll know who lands in what spots when the studios confirm the numbers tomorrow afternoon. For now, here’s the estimates.
Following in 4th place (and dropping like a stone) is Universal Pictures’ Bruno, which found only $8.37 million in its second weekend. The film, which won last weekend’s box office report, dropped 72% while showing on 2,759 theaters across the nation. Cohen’s latest skit-character comedy currently has a domestic gross of $49.5 million and $35.4 million from oversea territories. No budget has been listed.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Hangover lands right behind with $8.31 million on 2,667 theaters. With the film’s seventh weekend in the bag, the $35 million production has an amazing $235.8 million in domestic receipts. And when combined with the film’s $74.7 foreign gross, the studio has crossed the $300 barrier with a tally of $310.5 million worldwide.

that's a lot of galleons

sure, Bruno may be dropping like a stone, but it's still better than Transformers

Wiseguy 7/19/2009 4:02:46 PM

Not surprised that Bruno dropped like a rock like SLG said, afterall it dropped on consecutive days on opening weekend which is a rare feat. Luckily foreigners like laughing at us so it should do better overseas

Ice Age's release was 18 percent 3D and that accounts for 35 percent of its profit. Another sure sign that 3D is the future and theaters need to add screens. Can you imagine if Transformers2 was 3D? It would be breaking all kinds of records, but Bay, the forward thinker he is says he's totally opposed to shooting in 3D

Not really looking forward to anything til GI Joe, followed by District 9 and then Inglorious Basterds. Though I must say that the latest trailer for Funny People actually made me laugh so I may put my dislike for Rogen aside and see it.

I think anything is better than that sh*t movie Bay put out.  Potter was good but could have been better… it was kind of like “Public Enemies” to me in terms of just a good movie but not driving force to it's plot. I still say if anyone is looking for a good movie go to “Moon”. That was hands down one of the best sci-fi movies in recent years. “Away We Go” is a really funny comedy too, and I came out of both enjoying the whole movie going experience for once.

Agree with WiseGuy, I am really looking forward now to “District 9” and “Inglorious Basterds”… but not much else. I could care less about “G.I. Joe”. I can tell by the previews it's a joke on so many levels. Also I am doing the same with “Funny People” in terms of putting aside my hatred of Rogen (seriously he's The Hornet?) and Sandler  and going to see it.

Saw Harry Potter this weekend, and it was a mild disappointment.  I'm glad the movie does well in the box office, and I hope they redeem themselves with the Deathly Hollows movies.  The Prince plot just seemed to be treated like a red headed step child, while the characters were put on glorious display.  Good character film with bad plot and horrible lack of climax.

Now that I type it, it's like putting two super attractive hot people in bed together and while it may look good, neither one is truly left satisfied in the end.

Bring on District 9.  The trailer for that really has me intrigued.  I can't honestly say I'm excited for Basterds.  Tarantino's last movie really left a bad taste in my mouth.  It's like he was trying to hard to write Tarantino dialogue.

wessmith1966 7/19/2009 5:37:32 PM

What evilbeagle disliked about HP6 is what I really enjoyed; the character development. This movie really dealt with the growing pains of the characters and I really liked that. One problem I had though, and since I haven't read the books...

>>>>>>SPOILER ALERT>>>>>>>

The movie's title...I thought that there would be more about the half-blood prince than harry finding a heavily-annotated potions book and the reveal at the end of the film about the professor being the half-blood prince. So what? I mean, it really didn't play into the story all that much. Is there more to it in the book?

>>>>>>END SPOILER ALERT>>>>>

I enjoyed the movie. Maybe part of that comes from the fact taht there hasn't been a lot of good movies this summer. I'll probably see GI Joe, The Ugly Truth, District 9, Funny People and Basterds but I can't say that I'm looking forward to them. But for a couple of big impact films, it's been a disappointing summer for me.

Flint521466 7/19/2009 6:03:22 PM

Right there w/you wes...nothing this summer has really rang my bell.  I'll definitely see D9 & Basterds but that's about it.

hanso 7/19/2009 6:12:42 PM

The Hangover is the only true awesome flick this summer!!!

This summer makes me want to poke my eyes out. Save me AVATAR. Save meeeeeeee.

acidsquall73 7/19/2009 6:21:10 PM

wess, the book does go a little deeper with the HBP. But it was mostly the potions book and them trying to figure out who it actually was. Basically, the potions book becomes like Harry's really close friend and he is obsessed with it. Hermione, Ron, and Ginny all have a feeling that it could be a repeat of Tom Riddle's diary. But since that build up in the novel came out a little more, the reveal of who it actually is, and more to the point, who/what Harry had been trusting in and being "friends" with, was much more of a shock. Since you've seen it, now you can understand why it was such a shock.

wessmith1966 7/19/2009 7:02:15 PM

Thanks acidsquall. I can see why the big reveal would have more power in the book; watching the movie I thought...big deal. I plan to read all of the books in sequence as soon as I get through the books I have now.

hanso...for me, Star Trek was the best film of the summer. I can't wait for the DVD release in November. I'm anxious for some Avatar footage/trailer.

CaptAmerica04 7/19/2009 7:59:48 PM

Saw HBP twice this weekend.  Definitely in the top 2 Potter films for me.  Great character development, great heart, great humor.  Really a fun enjoyable film.  I'm not into the type of humor that Hangover is, so HBP is my top film of the summer.

2010 can't get here soon enough.  Bring on IM2!!!
