"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" shipping 12 million copies

By Karl Schneider     March 15, 2007

According to publisher Scholastic, a record breaking 12 million copies of the upcoming novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be shipped to stores for it's release on July 21.

Previous Harry Potter books have sold over 325 million copies and have been translated into 64 languages. The series has spawned four feature films and a fifth film based on the fifth installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, will reach theaters a week ahead of the new book's arrival.

The previous record for a first printing was 10.8 million, a mark set by the previous Harry Potter book which ended up selling almost 7 million copies in the first 24 hours.

KJ's Take:  Man is this series huge or what?  And it's ending!  What, oh what will Rowling's next series be?!  $10 says that it is based in the same world as Harry Potter.

I have loved this series from the very beginning. She is a breath of fresh air as far as current authors are concerned. i will be very sad to say good bye to the Harry Potter franchise. On a side note, she is going to sell a BUCKET load more books this time, because a lot more people (Like myself) will be purchasing 2 books instead of one so that my partner and I don't have to wait to read the book. I will be able to purchase the books at 9am on the Saturday, by 2pm I'm sure we will both have finished the book!

I'll take you up on that $10 bucks KJ! Now that she's created the second most popular series of all time, behind the Lord of the Rings. I think she's going to want to establish herself as a true creative writer and creat a new world. I don't think it will be nearly successful as the Harry Potter Series, but those are HUGE shoes to fill! Then again Tolkien never left Middle Earth huh? Still the bet stands! $10 bocks says it will be a new world Brotha!

I'd just retire and retail clothes made out of my money.

I'll take that bet as well KJ. She's said that there were 7 and even with as popular as this series is she's sticking to it (as opposed to another asshat author by the name of Robert Jordan who has taken a somewhat popular series and made it unreadable - blah). The lady has more money than God - there is no reason to dwell in this or even the need to write anything else. I say she has enough integrity to leave the series as is.
