Scoop Feedback:

April 10, 2003... At the London launch party for the CHAMBER OF SECRETS DVD, HARRY POTTER producer David Heyman told the BBC that work has already started on adapting the fourth HARRY POTTER book into a movie. Screenwriter Steve Kloves began work on HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE last week but already one possible problem is being considered for. J.K. Rowling's novel was, at the time, the longest book in the series and as such it may not work to distill the novel's adventure down into just one film. That's why there might actually be two GOBLET OF FIRE pictures instead of just one!

"When [Steve Kloves] gets to the end we'll make an assessment about whether that's the right thing to do or not," explained Heyman to the Beeb. "The goal is to try, if not we'll split it in two, but at the moment we're trying to do it in one."

The producer also gave a rough time frame for when production may begin on GOBLET OF FIRE film. Pre-production would commence near the end of 2003 with filming to start around this time next year. Heyman said that the plan is to release the fourth HARRY POTTER movie "a year, year and a half" after the release of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, which is targeted for a summer 2004 opening. That would mean GOBLET OF FIRE could be in theaters as early as the summer of 2005.

Heyman wouldn't comment on whether the young actors in the first three POTTER films would reprise their characters in a fourth film, saying that the decision was too early to make. As well, director Chris Columbus said that he wouldn't be back behind the camera lens just yet. "Four is starting a little too quickly, but Five is a possibility," Columbus quipped.

July 25, 2003... According to a story that appears in today's The Hollywood Reporter, director Mike Newell (DONNIE BRASCO, ENCHANTED APRIL) is keen on helming the fourth Harry Potter film for Warner Bros., HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. Reporter says that neither Newell nor the studio have approached the other yet but merely expressed their interest in hooking up together.

Production continues on the third Potter film, THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, scheduled for a summer 2004 release.

August 11, 2003... It's official: Mike Newell will direct HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE for Warner Bros. The studio made the announcement last weekend.

The script for GOBLET will be written by screenwriter Steve Kloves, the same fellow who's adapted all of the POTTER novels into screenplays so far. Filming is being eyed for an April 2004 start, with a planned holiday 2005 release date now being targeted. Don't forget that HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is currently shooting and will be released in June 2004.

What remains unknown is whether Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint will reprise their roles as Harry, Hermione and Ron in GOBLET. Remember, Warners said that the plan was to recast the the principal parts once the child actors started getting older in appearance. Will that happen or will Radcliffe and his pals remain in the fantasy franchise? [Source: Warner Bros.]

August 27, 2003... Speaking with the Swedish paper Aftonbladet, the three youthful stars of the HARRY POTTER films -- Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint -- have told the press that they will indeed be back in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

Thanks to a translation provided by The Leaky Cauldron, Watson told Aftonbladet's reporter that they will reprise their characters in the fourth POTTER film. The kids are pushing fifteen right now and when GOBLET starts to lens next year, will be sixteen.

Assuiming Warner Bros. makes all seven HARRY POTTER films, how long do the trio have before the filmmakers need to recast the parts? If it takes 18-24 months between each film, Daniel, Emma and Rupert will be over 20 before the final film comes out -- and that's assuming J.K. Rowling will have the final two books written. For now perhaps it's better to wonder if the moviemakers will be able to get HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, the fifth and latest book, into development by the time shooting starts on GOBLET.

"We're not up to speculate on that - one movie at a time," said Emma Watson. [First appeared in Aftonbladet; later appeared in The Leaky Cauldron.]

January 28, 2004... The online news source Ananova reports that children in Bulgaria are anxiously anticipating their audition for the part of Quidditch champ Victor Krum, a new character that we'll get to see in the fourth HARRY POTTER movie. Krum is the captain of the Bulgarian Quidditch team and a budding love interest for Hogwarts student Hermione Granger, and the producers are hoping to cast a true Bulgarian child in the part. The first round of auditions will take place in Bulgaria's capital of Sofia this week, and the finialists will then be flown to London for a meeting with producers and another audition.

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE sees a Quidditch World Cup held at Hogwarts, with the Bulgarian team one of the stars of the event. POTTER novelist J.K. Rowling thought to make the character of Krum a Bulgarian after the country's real-life mens soccer team advanced to fourth place in the 1994 World Cup. According to Rowling, Krum is supposed to walk with a slouch and have big, bushy eyebrows and a crooked nose.

Filming on the fourth HARRY POTTER movie is expected to kick off in April. [Ananova.]

April 13, 2004... Warner Bros. has announced that it wants to release HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE on November 18, 2005. Early filming has already started on that sequel but casting rumors are still flying as to who will be playing the roles of new characters we'll see in the picture. [Variety.]

April 30, 2004... Yesterday The Daily Express reported a story that actor John Malkovich had agreed to star as the sinister Lord Voldemort in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, now filming in Scotland. According to the British newspaper, Malkovich's two children are supposed huge fans of J.K. Rowling's books and convinced the actor to take on the part of Harry's most dreaded adversary.

However, new reports are now appearing that the Malkovich casting news is incorrect. A Warners spokesman told BBC Newsround that there was "no truth whatsoever" to the Malkovich claim.

In other GOBLET news, Jason Isaacs has confirmed that his character of Lucius Malfoy will appear briefly in the fourth film and then return in a larger capacity in film number five. Speaking with The Sun, Isaccs said "To be honest I thought I wouldn't get to be in the fourth film at all, but it will be nice to get the wig out of mothballs and start the slow warm-up for number five where I have some rather juicy and lovely stuff." May 24, 2004... HARRY POTTER producer David Heyman told CBBC Newsround two exclusive pieces of casting news for HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. First up, Brendan Gleeson will play Hogwart's new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Mad-Eye Moody. Gleeson's currently on the big screen in TROY playing Menelaus, the man whose wife, Helen, sparked the Trojan war.

Also cast in the fourth movie is Frances de la Tour who will play the Headmistress of Beauxbatons, the French magic school. de la Tour starred in the British comedy series RISING DAMP and has also appeared in numerous British TV programs including COLD LAZARUS and POIROT: DEATH ON THE NILE.

Filming on THE GOBLET OF FIRE is underway in Britain, with the franchise's trip of young stars returning to play Harry, Hermoine and Ron. [CBBC Newsround.]

June 15, 2004... BBC Newsround is reporting that they know the name of the actress playing the female Tri-Wizard superstar we'll get to see in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

According to the site, the part of Beauxbatons student Fleur Delacour will be played by Clemency Poesy, a 21-year-old French actress and relative newcomer to the world of English cinema.

Rounding out the remaining international group of Quidditch players are Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory and Stanislav Yanevski as Viktor Krum. None of these names have been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. yet but Newsround is pretty certain that these young actors have gotten the parts.

August 5, 2004... He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been found.

British actor Ralph Fiennes (SCHINDLER'S LIST, RED DRAGON) has been selected to play the dreaded Lord Voldemort in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. In J.K. Rowling's fourth novel Voldemort finally realizes his goal of acquiring a new body to replace the one he lost when a magic spell backfired years ago.

Also cast in the film is Miranda Richardson (THE HOURS) who will play sleazy tabloid reporter Rita Skeeter.

Warners also firmed up the remainder of the film's supporting cast which includes the following individuals: Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory; Stanslav Ianevski as Viktor Krum; Clemency Posey as Fleur Delacour; Katie Leung as Cho Chang; Pedja Bjelac as Durmstrang Professor Igor Karkaroff; Jeff Rawle as Amos Diggory; Roger Lloyd-Pack as Barty Crouch, the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation; and David Tennant will play Barty Crouch Jr.

Making up some of the many Hogwarts students are Matthew Lewis as Neville; Devon Murray as Seamus; Jamie Waylett as Crabbe; Joshua Herdman as Goyle; Alfie Enoch as Dean; Oliver Phelps as Fred Weasley; James Phelps as George Weasley; and Chris Rankin as Percy.

Gary Oldman will also be back to reprise his role as Sirius Black; Michael Gambon as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore; Robert Hardy as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge; Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle; Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy; Alan Rickman as Professor Snape; Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall; Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew; Mark Williams as Arthur Weasley; and of course, Robbie Coltrane will be back as Harry's favorite giant groundskeeper, Hagrid.

March 1, 2005... David Heyman, producer of the upcoming fourth Harry Potter movie, The Goblet of Fire, told SCI FI Wire that filmmakers, led by director Mike Newell, trimmed the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

The film, for example will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of elf liberation. "The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it]."

Heyman also added that he thinks people will enjoy seeing the world getting bigger. "I think the tasks are going to be great."
