I'm very impressed with HP's numbers. I'll have to eat some crow cause I thought Transformers would win the domestic race but that doesn't appear to be the case. I will say this about HP, the 168mil is a let down only when you consider that it pulled 92mil on Friday alone. That's front loaded like a mofo. Still very impressive.

I hope Cap kicks ass next week. it has a lot to battle, HP and even Transformers will be drawing people and that Friends with Benefits may pull  couples and females away. Still I have faith Cap will do alright and pull a #1

jedibanner 7/18/2011 5:45:00 AM

Cap won't be # 1, too many people hold off to see HP this weekend and will go next weekend to avoid the crowd.

Cap will do well but, this is David Vs Goliath and in real life, Goliath always win.

Can't wait to see both films.

I couldn't help but chuckles to see GL is the lowest of the low in this summer's numbers...hehehe....DC, you will never cease to amaze me.

ElBaz13 7/18/2011 5:56:44 AM

You are right. I don't want to sound pessimistic but Cap won't be able to beat Potter. At 168 million the first weekend, guaranteed the next weekend will be something like a 50% drop. That's still 75-80 million. Cap cannot make that the first weekend. He's popular but not A-list like Spidey and Batman. Cap also has stiff competition the next week with Cowboys and Aliens (genre fans) and Smurfs (families).

The only thing that could have Cap survive is strong word of mouth and excellent reviews.

I still think it will make at least 40-50 million the first weekend.

LOL! about GL. It's already gone from some of my local theatres.

David vs. Goliath in real life, Goliath always wins...um, I hope you are talking strickly movies otherwise I could give you a book of events in real life where David won...starting with this great nation of ours.

Cap is going to do very well but I'm sure transformers and HP are going to impact it's sales.  Like Wise pointed out, 92 mil on opening day for HP and had a huge drop after that so that might mean most that wanted to see it saw it this weekend.  Cowboys and Aliens has a much more difficult job of getting some of the left over money than Cap does.

Wiseguy 7/18/2011 6:07:53 AM

Keep in mind that this is summer, lots of kids can go see this during the week. Unlike school time when everyone waits for the following weekend to catch a film so by next weekend it should be a little softer than normal me thinks.

And if Cap only manages a 40-50mil weekend then the film will surely be a financial failure so bite your tongue with that speak.

HP was enjoyable and like someone said very poignant. I've never read the books and I also couldn't remember everything from the past movies, but it still was good. Though I was also disappointed in the aforementioned  "pissing laser wand" contests. Can't you do a whole bunch of other stuff with magick?

Saw it in 3D and the theatre was mostly empty on a Saturday night but there were alot of showings that night. I need to make a point of not seeing things in 3D because once the first few minutes have gone by you hardly see the 3D anymore so its not worth the expense. But I became HP obsessed after and spent a perfectly sunny Sunday afternoon indoors watching making of HP specials on cable.

I want Captain America to do well butthe Boy Who Lived is an unstoppable juggernaut.

That's just a guesstimate due to all of the competition out there. And yes, this day and age, 50 million opening in a busy summer means a flop. Sad to say that (see GL).

You never know. Looking at history and the #1 movie of all time, Avatar, it made $75 million on its second weekend. Sherlock Holmes opened that weekend and made 62 million. Chipmunks also opened that weekend and made 48 million. That's 185 million for the top 3 movies that weekend alone. If Potter dips to 70-75 million then perhaps Cap can make the same have a super tight box office race.

Transformers is the only other competition and based on how the totals are dipping and mostly negative reviews, won't make much of a dent on the first two movies.

Go Cap!

Just glad Harry Potter is over:)

evilbeagle, you will learn sir! The theatre I was in people went ape shit, there was applause and cheers from the whole theatre when the Dark Knight Rises trailer came up, and it's just a little teaser.  What will be the excuse when Rises makes a billion dollars in ticket sales?

HP pretty good too. I've seen them all in the theatre, an awesome accomplishment in film. I also got to see the trailer for War Horse and it looks really good. Spielberg is going to have a big holiday season with both that and Tin Tin.

I thought HP was very good. I was glad to see my favorite scene from the book; Mrs. Weasley destroying a certain baddie. It's strange now that the entire series is over. Looking back on the movies it's pretty amazing to think how they kept the cast together through the years. It was fun watching the kids grow up on screen. WB needs a new franchise.

I think Captain America is going to edge out HP this weekend, but not by much. I think Cap will bow at around $70 million and HP will pull in around $65 million. I know I'll be seeing cap four times this weekend (yeah, I'm an idiot but this is the movie I've waited 36 years to see) beginning Thursday at midnight.

The DKR teaser was ok, nothing special, but it definitely teased the audience because as soon as it was over there were excited murmurs thoughout the theater. That movie's going to kick the crap out of the box office. And sorry, I don't buy the arguement that TDK's success was built on Ledger dying. TDK was a gritty, exciting crime drama that just happened to have a super hero at its core. That's why I like the Nolan movies; they're good movies not just super hero movies. That's why FF, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and Green Lantern weren't as successful; they weren't good movies they were just super hero movies.

That's the reason I think Cap's going to be a big hit; from all indications it's a good movie.
