shac2846, I don't doubt TDKR will have big box office numbers, but I think it falls short of TDK when all is said and done.

I've been saying for a few weeks now that releasing Cap after HP was a mistake.  The 8th would have caught some of the patriotic vibe from the 4th which was on a Monday this year.  And TF3 in week 2 wouldn't have been as bad as HP in week 2.  I'm hoping Cap has great reviews and can have a solid opening and long legs like Thor did.  I want to see a great big Marvel Movieverse on screen and the success of these early movies are critical to that.

Just my opinion man and you may be right in the end.  Regardless, it will be hugely successful.

shac2846 7/18/2011 7:40:15 AM

I say it hits TDK and maybe even surpasses. I realize it's really early to estimate I'm just going off of things I've read in magazines and trades and the reaction the trailer got in the theatre I was in. Newsarama and EW did internet polls over films people were excited about in 2012 and TDKR won by a landslide on both. I found the newsarama one but I can't post a link mania won't let it post. Anyway, Batman Begins built a big audience when it came out on DVD and it says on its wiki page that BB dvd sales doubled after TDK came out. That doesn't sound like people interested in Ledgers death that sound like people interested in the films themselves. Like Wessmith said they're not just good superhero movies they're good movies I think people learned that that missed out on BB that's why TDK made so much not Ledgers death. Maybe its just me but I haven't been sitting in a theatre where a trailer, let alone a teaser trailer, got the kind of reaction TDKR did in the theatre I was in on Friday night. One idiot sitting three rows in front of me tried to start a wave, it didn't go over well.

That's cool dalgoda, I ain't directing that at you. As Wiseguy always says different strokes for different folks. But the idea that keeps getting thrown around on the boards that the TDK was successful because of Ledgers death is IMHO ridiculous. And like you said regardless it will be successful and most importantly, very likely a kick ass movie to boot.

Don't kid yourself.  TDK got a big boost from Ledger's death.  That's certainly not all there was to the film, but plenty of people went to see it because it was "Ledger's last movie" and he put in a good performance in it.

Those aren't the kind of people who go see a movie 8 times in the theater.  But they add up.

Mind you, if Ledger's performance in the movie hadn't been outstanding then there wouldn't have been so much interest in people who don't ordinarily see comic book movies.  But the same is true that if Ledger hadn't died then they also probably wouldn't have gone to see it.

HP was great, but I felt that they could have done more with it (wizard vs. wizard battles). I'm not suprised that it beat out The Dark Knight because HP caters to all ages young and old.

As far as Cap goes, i've said it before and i'll say it again, I will have to go see it about 10 times to help give it the revenue it deserves. Cap will have a hard time competeing with everything that is coming out. I've read two reviews and so far people love it. No sure if anyone else has heard anything?

Wiseguy 7/18/2011 8:24:31 AM

I've been reading the same thing kadet but I think they're not allowed to print any reviews yet. The guy from collider "Frosty" said he loved it and over time I find myself agreeing with him more often than not. Of course there could also be some negatives so til we see the cascade of revies we won't know.

As for next year I'm looking forward to The Avengers and Spidey more than TDKR, of course. The Nolan films just seem like standard crime films. I want something out of this world. I don't read comics because they imitate real life but because it's fantasy. Yeah Nolan made his films for everyone, I want films made for comic book superhero fans.

The Dark Knight Rises will not come close.  The only reason the Dark Knight did so well was because of Ledger dying.  Too many people realized how much the Dark Knight sucked to jump on a srquel.

I'll have to disagree with Wessmith on his comment that people will see a good movie just because it's good. We all know of movies we (and maybe critics) said was fantastic and still didn't do well at the B.O. And conversely, movies we thought were crap become huge hits. It all depends on the public's taste at the time.

I'm notoriously bad at predicting B.O. I still get kidded about thinking Speed Racer and Astro Boy would be hits ("They've got a built in audience. Of course, they'll be successful!") I do think TDKR will be huge. It has a built in audience (There I go again!) and a reputation for being not only great superhero movies but great movies in general.

I'd like to say The First Avenger will will squeeze to the top. Marvel movies tend to do well. It's a non controversial US flag draped superhero during a patriotic time in this country, but HP has big magic.
