Box Office Report

Harry Potter's Spell is on Top

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Sunday, July 15, 2007

This will be a strange Box Office Report. While the winner for the weekend is the new release and the movie everyone expected to win, I’m still not sure if that movie is as clear a winner as the movies ranked 2-4 judging off what they did in their performances. This is one of those strange weekends where everyone did great for their perspective runs. The 2nd place movie only dropped 48% from its previous weekend. The 3rd place movie only dropped 37% from its previous weekend. The 4th place movie only dropped 38% from its previous weekend. The 5th place movie 28% from its previous weekend.

Are you seeing a trend here?

While most weekends, there is a clear favorite…This weekend showcased strong performances by everyone. Everyone seems to have a piece of pie.

Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix earned 77.4 million over the 3 day weekend in its 4,285 theaters. It averaged an eye staggering total of $18,065 per theater per showing in each of those theaters and it pulled in 140.0 million since its first day of release earlier in the week.

Staying as strong (or even stronger according to Theater sources) is Transformers. It broke the biggest Chinese Wednesday opening of all time pulling in 2.95 million. It also took the all time Imax opening with 1.9 million (beating Spider-Man 3’s 1.8 mil record). The film pulled in another 36.0 million this weekend in the states, landing in 2nd place by dropping only 48% from its previous weekend. It also accomplished two other tasks very clearly by Friday morning. It broke the 200.0 domestic barrier and it broke the 300.0 worldwide barrier. In point of fact, I’d say it has a lot more than that by the time Worldwide totals are tallied up Tuesday afternoon. The autobots have pulled in 222.9 million here in the states with a worldwide total 320.1 million. Keep in mind this action film has yet to be released in Japan, UK, Germany or France. It seems very apparent that a lot of us (myself included) underestimated this film by our initial Summer Top 10 Winners. By the end of July, it’s going to give the top 3 a run for their money.

Landing in 3rd place is Pixar’s Ratatouille. The latest installment in their franchise of films directed by Brad Bird has stayed as strong as Transformers is doing and it’s in their third week of release. Remy the Rat (voiced by Patton Oswalt) pulled in another 18.0 million this weekend dropping only 37.9 % from its previous weekend amount. The rat would be a chef has taken in 143.0 million here in the states thus far and it has yet to be released in most oversea markets.

Following strong right behind in 4th place is Fox’s Live Free or Die Hard. The latest installment of John McClane dropped only 38% in its third week of release pulling in 10.8 million over the weekend. The film has pulled in 102.9 million in its domestic run and another 91.1 million overseas as of last week. Basically, it’s doing as well in both markets, domestic and overseas.

The Warner Bros romantic comedy License to Wed lands in 5th place grabbing another 7.4 million this weekend and dropping only 28% from its previous weekend. It has pulled in 30.7 million it its two weeks of release.

MGM’s 1408 (based on a Stephen King short story) continued to stand steady and strong took in another 5.0 million this weekend. With a budget of only 25 mil, it has pulled in 62.2 million over the past 4 weeks of release.

The Universal flop Evan Almighty took in 4.9 million over the weekend. It may not be a disaster for the studio but its flop status remains unchangeable. With a budget of 175 million, it has pulled in 91.8 million so far.

The other Universal comedy which is anything but a flop is Knocked Up. The romantic comedy took in another 3.6 million landing in 8th place over the weekend. With a budget of only 30 mil, it has pulled in 138.1 million domestically.

Following behind in 9th place is Michael Moore’s Sicko documentary. His latest target has taken in another 2.6 mil over the 3 day weekend making its total domestic run sit at 15.8 million. It has landed in 9th place each of its first 4 weekends of release.

Last up this weekend is the latest installment in the DannyOcean franchise, Ocean’s Thirteen. The ensemble comedy took in another 1.9 million landing in 10th place this weekend. It has pulled in 112.4 million domestically and has a worldwide total of 253.1 million.

Notes: Just for information’s sake, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer landed in 11th place with 1.5 million. Captivity (the “other” new opener this week) landed in 12th place with 1.5 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End landed in 13th place with 1.4 million.

Every Potter fan I talk to say the books are way better. I think the films are ok. They seem to be second-rate whodunits that are set in a cool world with cool characters...but if you've seen one...
Transformers was even better the second time around. Some kid next to me turned to his parents and asked "What is 'masturbating'?" I spilled my popcorn from laughing so hard

Weather played a factor in the good turnout this weekend.

The ridiculously hot temperatures on the East and West coasts probably contributed to the high box office. Traditional outside activities are just not that fun in 100+ degree weather. A lot of people opted air conditioned theaters.

Looks like another strong weekend across the board.

I think the 48% drop of Transformers is a bit of a skewed statistic, given that it had already been running four days before its first weekend. Spidey 3 & Pirates 3 both dropped a bit over 60% in their second weekends, and I suspect that Transformers would probably be showing a similar drop if it had opened over a more traditional weekend period of Fri-Sun (or even Thur-Sun like Pirates 3). The very low (28%) drop for License to Wed (which was released on a Tuesday) is likely a result of the same statistical skewing. Actually, since Transformers already had a (nearly) full week under its belt, it might be more accurate to compare full weeks, in which case it dropped about 56-57% from its first week. Transformers is still running stronger than I expected, but I'd just thought I'd point out how the weekend-to-weekend drop might be a bit misleading in its case.

Was there any doubt Harry Potter would do great at the box office? With the hype over the final book coming out in less than a week, this movie was sure to be successful. I defend the movie from its critics because they are so well cast and well acted. Yes, they had to shorten Order of the Phoenix a great deal to make it into a movie. Many subplots such as Ron's trouble with Quiddich were dropped for time and pacing. I will tell people to go back and read the books but still enjoy the movies on their own terms.

Note: I wonder how Hairspray will do next week. Musicals can be very hit or miss. As successful as Chicago was, I don't think it brought the musical that Hollywood thought it would. The Producers, Rent, and The Phantom of the Opera didn't do as well at the box office as hoped.

I just love it That Ocean's 13 is still in Top Ten and Pirates isn't.
I loved this Potter, but Probably not my favorite. It would have had a huge opening weekend if it didn't start Tuesday night (I realize It's actually really early WED).
As for your comment, originaldave77, what book isn't better than the movie. Also I think the movies (Books) have done a good job of coming up with different things, considering they have to follow a general plot leading to the final confrontation, as well as being locked into the same location. I think Jo is brilliant.

I think it will be interesting to see how Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows affects the Box Office next weekend.

All time IMAX opening for Transformers? I think he meant to put that under Harry Potter, no? I just finished working for IMAX on HP5 3D a few weeks ago and I'm pretty darn sure they weren't doing Transformers. I wish they had though. That movie was begging to be put on the glorious IMAX screen. It would have been wicked!

This is absolutely off subject but over at latino review there are some pics of Heath Ledger stading around and waiting in Joker make up.

I'm glad Live Free or Die Hard is doing so well! Not bad for a C+ film! ;-)

I liked the new Potter movie a lot. Some people don't like that they don't have as much of the "kiddie" film aspect to them, but I like the darker stories better.

Transformers, Schmansformers. Worth seeing once, any more than that will rot your brain out!

Merin • Jul 16, 2007, 12:44am •
You cannot use opening weekend drop comparisons for a movie that opened Friday and one that opened Tuesday. It makes no sense.

Transformers and Harry Potter cannot have their second weekend drops compared to movies that opened on Friday, it isn't fair.

Also, a large percentage drop from a huge number isn't as bad as a medium percentage drop from a medium opening, if you follow my logic.

HP did about what I expected.

iPhones and Transformers. I don't get it.
