After two months of various G.I JOE news, it seems that Hasbro and Paramount want to clarify to the fans some storyline details of the project. They point out that the story will be based on the G.I Joe vs. Cobra mythology, the comic book series and the television series. They also pointed out where the Joes will have their base of operations.

Here's what the production companies told Comingsoon;

Hasbro's G.I. Joe Team wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts regarding the G.I. Joe live-action movie that we are developing with Paramount Pictures.

First and foremost, we are not changing what the G.I. Joe brand is about. The name "G.I. Joe" will always be synonymous with bravery and heroism.

The G.I. Joe brand has enjoyed a successful 43-year history, spanning two key generations. The first was the line of 12-inch "realistic military" figures that were popular with kids in the 1960s and 1970s.

The second generation, was created in 1982, and is based on a cast of fictional heroes and villains that make up the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" fantasy. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series.

This movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm. Without all of you, the brand would not be where it is today.

G.I JOE hits theaters sometime in 2009.

I wouldn't say they butchered transformers, but it wasn't how i remembered it. I thought teh cube idea was dumb, but back to this: There is a lot that can go wrong, but I think this is going to be frickin awesome and I can't wait.

I loved Transformers, if GI Joe is half as fun, I am down like your granny's panties after a bran muffin.

ultrazilla2000 your DAMN RIGHT about Transformers.! It was always just a commercial. Albeit a really cool commercial, just like the movie. I don't ever plan on buying a GM but I sure as hell love watching a kick ass car chase scenes between two sweet muscle cars or a huge Tractor trailer, THEN watch said Cars turn into robots and blow the SH*T out of each other. Transformers is what it is. A commercial.
I find it hard to believe that anyone actually thought it wouldn't focus on the car makes and models. And so what they had to change a few of them (Blame VW) Transformers RULES!
As for G.I.Joe, sorry to burst anyones bubble, but the same goes for it. It was a commercial used to sell useless hunks of plastic to 10 year olds. I loved the cartoon, watched it every day, and hope the movie follows the it, not the lesser known comic, and not the older 60's-70's version.

I think i may have posted this before but does anyone else think it would be cool if they don't say who's cast as Cobra Commander and let people guess till the end credits roll. They may have a hard time getting an actor to agree to that and they may not be able to depending on the rules of the S.A.G.

Meh.

I'd rather see a movie based on the original (and in my opinion the only) G.I. Joe. I always thought the '80s version of G.I. Joe was retarded and lame.

You must be a bit older Mac, for me and my childhood, it was all about the battle with Cobra...

Bring it on and YO---JOE!!!!

I just hope they don't butcher this like they did Transformers, I wasn't happy watching a car commercial in theaters...

IMHO the cartoon was horrible compared to Larry Hama's comic book. I hope they go more by that than the cartoon. Oh, and for the record, Hawk was the leader in both genres. Duke was Top Kick.

I'm good with this, but I'm not sure there is anything new here. Always happy when they clarify stuff.
Cobra commander was always my favorite character. Hope they get him right. Oh and Destro was also awesome, but if they do him like the show this will suck.
