Today, a visit with the Saginomiya family. Best to bring a map. And a few extra pints of blood.
What They Say
Episode 14: The Saginomiya Clan
The Saginomiya Clan are specialized demon exterminators. It is said that Isumi has the strongest power from successive generations but why did she lose it? According to Isumi's mom, to regain lost power, it solidifies when one turns 16 but having a feminine appearance, being born unlucky as a butler, and being initially named "Ha" which is limited to a boy are necessary. Sure enough, is she already 16??

We start with a side diversion, as we have the Second Reader Popularity Contest from Weekly Shonen Sunday, the magazine in which the Hayate the Combat Butler manga is published (whatever happened to the First? Hayate and Nagi, emceeing the event, ask us, the viewers, not to sweat the details). Except that it was all a dream in Nagi's head. Well, other than the votes and the results of the popularity contest, which the Narrator informs us were 100% accurate. After that bit of nonsense, we get to the real story for this episode: Isumi's powers against supernatural monsters appear to be waning. The cure for her problem is very hard to find however: the blood of a feminine-looking boy who is powerful, yet cursed with bad luck and is a butler, with a name that starts with a "Ha" and ends with a "Te." Wherever will they find such a boy?
At the Saginomiya residence, we meet Isumi's family. Isumi's mother, Hatsuho, is a complete space cadet. Her grandmother, seems to have an even weaker grasp of her surroundings. In comparison to the two, Isumi looks to have it together. After a little bit of trouble, Hayate leaves the residence and heads back home. On the way there, though, he is accosted by a small masked figure who attempts to kill him, and molest Maria, who makes a brief appearance. After a long, and amusing, fight, Hayate unmasks the figure. I will leave who it is as a surprise, since it is very funny.
In Summary:
This episode, we get to take a closer look at the Saginomiya family, and what a strange family it is. While they may be possessed of spiritual powers, it appears that the price they paid for those powers was a corresponding lessening of common sense and powers of concentration. All of this, however, serves as a great set up for the battle that follows in the second half of the episode. Following the tender drama of the Hinagiku's Birthday arc, this serves as a great piece of comedic relief. Recommended for those who like silly comedy.
