Marvel confirms THOR Casting, Provides Story Details

It's been a big weekend for Marvel movie fans with two major casting announcements breaking on 'Thor'. Marvel is officially confirming one of them.

The studio issued a press release touting the casting of Tom Hiddleston in the role of Loki. Other details have emerged from the press blurb as well:

Apparently 'Sarah Connor' writers Ashley Miller and Zak Stentz have taken a pass at Mark Protosevich's script for the film.

Here's how Marvel describes the movie:

"Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard.  At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.  Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.  Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth."

They also provide some details on Hiddleston who has paired with Branagh on the London production of Chekhov’s 'Ivanov' as well as the previously mentioned BBC miniseries 'Wallander'. He's also starred in a production of 'Othello' with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's 'The Gathering Storm'.

Will Nathan Fillion be in another DC Movie?

A little birdie tells Comics2Film that fan-fave actor Nathan Fillion took a meeting with DC Comics last week.

We can only speculate what the meeting may have been about. Fillion recently appeared as Steve Trevor in the 'Wonder Woman' animated feature. It could be that he's gearing up for more voice actiing in the upcoming 'Batman/Superman' movie. Or maybe he's angling to land a role in one of the live-action films.

What do you think, Maniacs, about Nathan Fillion as Superman? Lex Luthor? Hal Jordan? Sinestro? As G'nort? Post your comments below...

Christensen and Hounsou in MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN

Teaser poster art for MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN

'Mandrake the Magician' has been one of those projects that's been in play for a long time and seen many false starts and backslides.

Today comes the stealth announcement that the project is once again showing signs of life.

We've learned that Mimi Leder ('The Peacemaker', 'Deep Impact') is now on board to direct the movie, which will star Hayden Crhistensen ('Star Wars') and Djimon Hounsou ('Push') as Mandrake and Lothar respectively.

Although the movie is based on Lee Falk's classic comic strip, the fleet of screenwriters on the project (including Josh Oppenheimer, Thomas Dean Donnelly, JV Hart, Ian Jeffers and Kevin Bernhardt) have tweaked and modernized the concept considerably.

Here's the description of the film:

"Jackson Mandrake lives life on the edge. Working as an underground magician and escapologist, his act has grown increasingly dangerous. Following a daring escape from an SUV that has been dropped out of an aeroplane at the Burning Man Festival, he is coerced by the CIA into breaking a deep-cover agent named Xi Shing Lung out of a maximum security jail. Hypnosis, contortion, distraction and technical wizardry all come into play as Mandrake breaks the agent out from the inside within a 24-hour deadline.

"But back on the outside, Mandrake learns that it was all a set-up. Xi is a CIA agent gone bad. He offers Mandrake the chance to join his crime ring. When Mandrake refuses, he's a marked man. He must escape his would-be-killers and also the real CIA who accuse him of being in league with Xi. His quest to clear his name leads him into all sorts of dangers, which he must overcome with daredevil escapes that require all his conjuring skills. And along the way, Mandrake is forced to confront his past and the girl he left behind... "

The film will be produced by China's Tiger8 Production along with Omega Productions, Inc.

Luke Goss Concedes MTV Movie Award

Luke Goss is nominated for a few MTV Movie Awards, but he's already conceding the prize for "Best Villain".

Goss told MTV Splash Page that his portrayal of Prince Nuada in 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' doesn't deserve to win against one other nominee.

"The late, great Heath Ledger! That’s beyond tough competition," said Goss. "It’s fun just to be nominated. He did a God-given performance. I think he should get it. He will get it. He should win given his performance. I think he’s got everyone in his camp. I hope he wins it."

However, Goss will gladly accept the "Best Fight" award, for which he's also a co-nominee.

LE PETIT NICOLAS Teaser Trailer!

Oh, yes! Here it is. The first teaser trailer for 'Le Petit Nicolas'.

What is 'Le Petiti Nicolas'? Well, it's a French comic strip that's yeilded a French film, which has a really strange teaser trailer.

Check it out...

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

So, basically they are going with the comic book origin story for Thor. They'll probably have to tweak the part about how Donald Blake finds the cane.

"Mandrake gestures hypnotically."

This sounds like a great way to modernize Mandrake. I've liked shows like the Mentalist and the British mentalist Derren Brown, David Blaine and such. To make Mandrake someone like that who uses all those skills to also fight crime sounds great. HR doesn't always seem to be the most expressive actor but I guess he'll do.

I like the story set-up for Thor. Can't wait to see a Middle Earth type fantasy world clash with modern Earth.

violator14 5/19/2009 8:41:25 AM

Does anybody else think that Hayden Christensen is NoT a good actor? Kinda reminds me of a poor man's Paul Walker or something.

hanso 5/19/2009 9:18:31 AM

Is that even possible?  I didn't know there could be such as thing as a poor man's Paul Walker.

That's a risky move by Marvel casting two unknowns for the leads of Thor a character who isn't that big to begin with.  I thought they would bring in a bigger name to the villain role.

comicbookguy 5/19/2009 9:55:25 AM

Nathan Fillion is a great actor I hope he is in talks for a live action movie!

Flint521466 5/19/2009 10:57:29 AM

I dont' think Christensen is that bad.  He was pretty good in "Shattered Glass".  Alot of his bad rep is d/t the stiff acting in the prequel trilogy but EVERYBODY'S acting was stiff in those movies.   Way to go Lucas....you chinless bufu.

I thought Mark Paul Gossler was the poor mans Paul Walker?

monkeyfoot 5/19/2009 11:01:17 AM

Don't even know how I repeated the same comment I put down hours earlier only this time it's listed as "anonymous." Maybe it was Mandrake's magic.

swisshammer 5/19/2009 11:46:48 AM

Aw, C'mon! Christensen is an AWFUL actor! He's got one dimension: WHINEY! He was whiney in Shattered Glass, whiney in Star Wars, whiney in Jumper, whiney in Life as a House, whiney in everything! Even when the guy is trying to not be whiney, HE WHINES! I'd love to slap him in the face for what he did to my beloved Darth Vader. Ugh. Ok, I'm ok now.

No wait! The guy whines like a little bitch! I wanna get a group together, go to his house in Beverly Hills, storm the gate, and lodge a knife in his vocal chords.

Not really, but I can dream, right?

swisshammer 5/19/2009 11:48:32 AM

However, as much as I dislike HC, I'm all for Nathan Fillion in DC live-action movies! The guy is just purely entertaining.
