HAZE Not Set for High Definition

Derek Littlewood---creative lead for PS3's upcoming Haze----wanted to clarify some true high definition comments made on the game by publisher Ubisoft. It seems that Ubisoft made a comment on the PlayStation Blog, telling fans that the game would be running in 720p. Technically, they're correct but Littlewood wanted to clarify to Ripten that while the game was upgraded for the platform, it's not indicative of the game's true resolution, which continues to be 1024x576.

"We prioritize a nice, smooth framerate over a different res," said Littlewood. "Personally, I don't really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty, they did the same with Halo, and they say with those games, 'It's not running at true HD!' And it's like, I don't care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me."

He went also to say that he hopes fans will still enjoy the game, despite the mix-up on resolutions.

'Yeah, the resolution was a bit lower than I was expecting,' then I hope people wouldn't, because it has other things it does really well."

As a PC gamer who recently switched to PS3, I couldn't agree more. I'd mutch rather have a smooth framerate over definition. I played GTA IV for all of 15 minutes, and haven't touched it since. Who cares about the level of detail and lighting if the game is running 20-30 fps. I've played the Haze demo and I'm very impressed. I can't wait to see the final product!

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high, I was optimistic after the demo too. Ign.com gave the game a 4.5 out of ten, XPLAY gave it a 2 out of 5. A standard FPS with a substandard story and little innovation. Considering how long this was in development it's pretty sad. Halo 3 and Resistance are both old news now, and either game is better than Haze.

Save your money for Resistance 2 and Bioshock which was recently announced for PS3. My PS3 will continue to collect dust while I wait for a game that justifies the price I paid for it. Most FPS games handle better on the 360 anyway.

Here's hoping Metal Gear Solid 4, and Infamous are fantastic because at this point Ratchet And Clank: Future Tools of Destruction, Uncharted, and Resistance:Fall of Man are the only PS3 exclusives I've been even remotely impressed with.

GTA IV has framerate issues on PS3? Haven't had any issues what-so-ever on the 360 build, the exclusive downloadable content was what swayed me to that version, but it sounds like I made the right call regardless.

bobcock08, I believe there's an update online for GTAIV for the PS3 if you haven't already downloaded it yet. Perhaps that might resolve some of the problems that you have had.

bobcok,

you stopped playing GTAIV because the framerate was 30 fps? Do you realize that 30 fps is a pretty standard framerate? GTAIV runs pretty smooth on both consoles and the occasional hitch really isn't that big of deal. You're missing out.

And the Haze demo, much like the full game, sucked. The critics have pretty much dropped their pants and taken a collective piss on Haze, and for good reason.
