According to Variety, HBO has acquired the rights to George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.

The series will be turned into a dramatic series to be written and executive produced by David Benioff (Troy) and D.B. Weiss (Halo).  Benioff and Weiss will write all episodes but one, which will be written by Martin.

HBO plans to dedicate a season to the plot of each book and there are currently 4 books in print with a 5th expected in 2007.  Martin will co-executive produce the series.

KJ's Take:  Holy Gods of Westeros!  Are you kidding me?  I mean, are you god damn kidding me?!  HBO, I love you, I love you, I love you.  Screw this series up and I'll take your whole network down.

With Martin taking such an active role in the series, he will have no one to blame but himself if it turns out to be crap.

God I can't wait.  Great news.  Amazing news.  Pat are you reading this!

This series is in good hands..HBO does a great job with all of their series. Rome for example is amazing. I anticipate that the series will be as edgy as the books. This is the best adult fantasy out there right now.

This is the most unbelievably cool news I've read in a year on this site. I agree, if the makers of Rome are doing this then ALOT of the content in SoI&F will be in the TV show. Dayum!

Oh yes, i'm a little disheartened that pretty much all hopes of turning these books into major motion pictures are now dashed, but hell i'll take 4 or 5 seasons over 4 or 5 movies. The fact that George himself is such a huge fan of Rome I'm sure he was very happy to make a deal with HBO. I'm not terribly crazy about that show's aesthetic so hopefully they'll get some good set designers, VFX ppl, cast, and shooting locations for this project. As thucydides said this is definitely one of the best adult fantasy out there now.

Yes - but in all that excitement remember what they did to Carnivàle.. They said they were dedicated to it and pulled the plug before the words were out of their mouths.

I agree they talked out of both sides of their mouths when it came to Carnivale. And what happened to series based on the Dead in Dixie books, that was being produced by Alan Ball for HBO? That was announced a year ago what happened to that? So don't get your hopes up that it will even get made.

Odd...I just picked up the first book to read and kinda randomly too. Guess I'll have to read the books soon.

No clue. But KJ's excited. I'll have to check it out.

Between this and "Preacher," HBO is really commiting themselves to adapting some amazing source material.

Doing this and Preacher seems like it will have quite a bit of production costs. I would be worried about both surving to their conclussions, ala Carnivale.

As long as they lure people into paying for HBO, the production costs shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Now how are they going to find an actor to play Tyrion?
