Nearly a year and a half after announcing their intentions to adapt George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" to their network, HBO has officially given the greenlight to the highly anticipated fantasy series. HR reports the premium network has picked up the project for a first-season debut next spring. Nine episodes plus the pilot have been ordered. Production will begin in Belfast this June.

From the moment "Thrones" was first announced in development, the series based on the George R.R. Martin novels has generated enormous, perhaps unprecedented, online interest for a series at such an early stage.

The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king's new right-hand man. The four-and-counting books in the series would each be used as one season of the series.

Unlike many fantasy novels, the "Thrones" series largely avoids relying on magical elements and instead goes for brutal realism -- think "Sopranos" with swords. Martin, a former TV writer ("Beauty and the Beast"), writes each chapter as a cliffhanger, which should lend itself well to series translation. David Benioff and Dan Weiss are the series creators.

I'm about 3/4 through the first book.  I'm enjoying it so far. I can definitely see Sean Bean for Eddard.  In fact, I've checked out the IMDb listing, and agree with all the casting choices I've seen. Big shock, I know, HBO is producing a quality product...

The Song of Fire & Ice series is pretty darn good.  Glad to hear HBO greenlit the series.  I just hope it has staying power and they don't cancel it like other shows (Deadwood, Carnivale, etc.) before it has time to wrap up gracefully.

YES!!!!

Not that I was worried that it wouldn't get picked up but I'm so happy to finally have a final confirmation.  Can't wait for spring 2011.  Looks like Martin will have to get in gear and write the last two books in the next seven years otherwise the show will end up on hiatus.  That sounds like a lot of time but seeing as we've been waiting 5 years for A Dance with Dragons, he's got his work cut out for him.

fft5305, that's awesome that you are enjoying reading the books.  They only get better.  I agree that the casting has been tremendous.  Sean Bean is perfect for Eddard and I'm really looking forward to seeing Lena Headey as Circei.  She will be great playing that deceitful, insestuous bitch.  I read that she was pregnant while filming the pilot so she had to use a body double.  What a shame.  But actually my favorite bit of casting is Peter Dinklage as Tyrion.  He will be incredible.  I wonder though how they will handle the young actors growing up over the course of the show.  Especiallly Arya (my favorite character) and Bran. Will they stretch out the timeline of the books to compensate, or simply recast them at some point?  It will be interesting to see.  At least they have cast some of the children older seeing as there are quite a lot of underage sexual situations, which is one thing to read about since it fits the "time period" but is definitely not something we need to see on television.

I just hope this is able to grab a big audience and go strong throughout the series.  Did I say I can't wait to see this?

One more thing.  As much as the books don't rely on magical elements, they are definitely there.  And when they do come into play, it is usually a big deal.  The fantasy elements definitely increase in each consecutive book.  I'm most excited to see how they handle the last Danaerys scene in the book.  Should be wicked.

im interested in seen how they will incorporate the Wolves in the TV series.  Of any book to TV or movie translation (outside of LOTR) this is the one I have the highest hopes for and am most excited for.

I also agree that the casting has been phenomenal

I really liked the books as well, read them all except for Feast but that's because I'm boycotting anymore Martin books until he finishes the series...if he ever does that is.

ddiaz, don't get your hopes up about Martin finishing it.  HBO series can take a looooong time to finish.  Sapranos was only a 5 or 6 season series yet it took about 10 years for them to do it.   I hope you are right but I'm not getting my hopes up for the rest of the books to be written though I will say I bet he releases Dances right around the time this series comes out to max book sales.

As far as Games....any of you genre fans out there are going to like this.  If they stay true to the books it will be one of the best series on TV.

axia777 3/3/2010 7:51:17 AM

This will be more epic than Rome and True Blood put together.  They are staying true to the books as Martin is working on the scripts with the people to make sure it is all done RIGHT.

Sex, blood, swords, dragons, magic, this series is going to own all of TV by the balls I tell you.

As long as it has Sean bean im there, been waiting for something for him to shine on his own with...better late than never ...

axia777 3/3/2010 9:21:42 AM

Well everdreaded it does have Sean Bean.  But have you read the books?  If so you know what happens to his character.  Read the books if you have not as they are some of the best genre books ever written in the history of fantasy or Sci-Fi.

ThemanG01 3/3/2010 9:38:45 AM

Maybe this will prompt Martin to finish the series...doubt it though.
