It looks like David Fincher's pet project is getting pushed back to the dungeons of development hell, Maniacs. The Fight Club director has been hoping to remake the 1981 cult phenomenon Heavy Metal but Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Paramount has dropped the project and left Fincher with the hopes of shopping it around Hollywood.

Not even a bigshot like David Fincher could keep Heavy Metal at Paramount. The Zodiac director, who is currently putting the finishing touches on his highly-anticipated Brad Pitt movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, has been spearheading an edgy remake of the 1981 R-rated animated flick inspired by the 1970s fantasy magazine of the same name. But Tim Miller, whose Blur Studio is handling the animation, says he and Fincher, along with current Heavy Metal publisher Kevin Eastman, are now shopping the film to other studios because Paramount's new production execs felt the movie was too risque for mainstream audiences.

To this day I've not seen the original... I think I saw a straight to VHS sequel.... but that may have been rum and sleep.

That's too bad about this, I was really hoping Fincher would get get his chance with HM. Maybe there will be other takers. Fincher's name has to carry some weight and and we know there is at least a cult following for this material. I was looking forward to some animated boobies

But do you really think they should make a remake of such a classic like Heavy Metal?!! I dont have problems with remakes, but I just dont see the need for this movie. Maybe Just make part 3 with new crazy stories. I did really enjoy part 2 also. A quote from part 2 "WHAT A GUY GOTTA DO TO GET LAID AROUND HERE" LMAO.

Isn't Fincher switching his eyes to "GOON" anyway? I was pretty sure he was going to be working with Blur Studios and doing a CGI movie based on this comic that nobody has heard of?

The original is a fantastic piece of animation and one of my top 5 movies to watch while intoxicated. I would personally love to see what kind of mind-blowing stories Fincher could give us.

I've been wait for this for a looooooooooong time, and these are the guys to do it. I am a little confused though. The article reads, "edgy remake" but than reads, "inspired by the 1970's fanstasy magazine by the same name". In the past when a movie is "inspired" by something it usually means the that it's a very loosely factual, or far from it's origin. I'd love to see these guys do a remake of this. The animation would be kick-ass and with Fincher at the helm I have total confidence it won't suck. I mean come on guys. If you don't agree with any of these opinions than just the base reason as to WHY Paramount doesn't want to do it should suffice. TOO rique for mainstream audiences? It's Heavy Metal. Back when it was released it was too risque. A proper remake for this means that it should be too risque to today as well. All I can say to those nay-sayers is to get over it. Hollywood's going to remake, reimagine, rehash, rework, readapt, and rethink old material. There making money off of it so they're going to continue running to the nearest Blockbuster, ignoring the New Release wall, and start watching the back catalog of stuff. So would you rather have some idiot remake this classic gem into some teenie-bopper-flash-of-colors-PG-13 garbage to sell to the kids? Or be too risque for a huge studio like Paramount show disinterest? .... ... That's what I thought. Good luck Fincher. I'll be waiting eagerly for inturpritation.

They should do a live action Heavy Metal film and go independent with the release. Forget the majors!!!

Sooner or later this movie will be made. I am sad about the delay, because I was really looking forward to it. I think Paramount dropped out because they know this film isn't going to make a lot of money at the box office. HEAVY METAL has always had a cult following. This new film needs to be "R" and an Anthology like the original.

"...Paramount's new production execs felt the movie was too risque for mainstream audiences."<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />1)fuck them, they're retarded. 2)GOOD.<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />Paramount's new Production execs are stupid because RISQUE was exactly what the original WAS. Graduitous nudity at every turn, Cocaine snorting Aliens, Loch Nar glowing green orbs of well... something.
