They probably will rename them at some point, jackwagon. It already is New Manhattan. But Hedlund does seem like a good fit for Kaneda/"Ken".

It looks like were running over well-tread ground in regards to our first potential lead star of Warner Bros. Pictures upcoming Akira. When the studio gave the green-light to the production two weeks ago, Variety reported that Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) was set to play the role of Kaneda. Flash forward to today and the trade has backtracked the initial report by suggesting the actor is in "talks" to tackle the lead character.
After a rumor race that had names that included anyone from Robert Pattinson to Keanu Reeves, we suggest that Hedlund is still very likely to be the one who will lead the production but it's not a done deal yet. But feel free to speculate on who would make a better Kaneda or start your fantasy casting for the other major roles.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) will be directing this latest adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga, based on a screenplay by writers Steve Kloves.
Plot Concept: "Akira" is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork. The film is said to take place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film.

Pure crapfest of a crappy americanized movie in the making folks....crap crap and a big load of crap on top of a thick layer of crap.
I will finally see AKIRA when this comes out, have never bothered with the anime nevermind the manga. I like my manga adaptations Americanized otherwise I'd pass
Lol @ Wiseguy "Americanized otherwise I'd pass"....SMH...
Jedibanner I'm with you on this one...this movie will probably be a steaming turd...American whitewashing at it's finest...first Dragonball Z and Last Airbender now friggin' Akira...it's almost like these movie studios LOVE making duds or something...I hope this movie doesn't suck, but it probably will...Garrett Hedlund as Kaneda lol!!!(Obviously, they will probably change it to "Ken" or something but I still crack up everytime I read one of those headlines)
I used to never be one for manga. I'd think it was just some adult porn cartoons. However, spending a couple of years in Tokyo I soon realised a lot of it was just adult porn comics and cartoons. With a few surprises of grown men in business suits reading a copy on the morning train and it's about some japanese school girl getting abused by something or another. Kinda freaked me out.
However, I started looking at the none porn versions and I finally watched Akira for the first time. I think if I had watched it when it first came out and not 15 years later, I may have been a little more impressed. It was too drawn out for me but that's just my opinion. It's a great story and some of the scenes are pretty epic.
I just hope this new version will stand up to the original and then go a bit further.
the only anime I want to see turned into a film would be something like Lupin III, and even then I would only like to see Jigen as an american as he is sposed to be from Chicago, Lupin would have to be played by a Frenchman I would have thought...
Akira is one of those shows that will be okay whitewashed. But instead of calling it Akira give it a new name and put on every add based on Akira. The first thing that comes to mind not white washed but completely amercanized "10 things i hate about you" .
I actually think distancing yourself abit from something like Akira may be a good idea. There isn't a big enough fan base to carry a tent pole movie. Also the fact its an old anime isn't going to convince people to come in.
I'm really wondering how they plan on keeping the characters' original names and not Americanize them along with the setting. I could see them getting away with keeping Akira himself as is, but the other major players won't translate as easily. Why not rename Kaneda as Ken, or something similar?
