Heeeere's IRON MAN 2's Whiplash!

Mickey Rourke, barely armored in IRON MAN 2

By Rob M. Worley     June 10, 2009
Source: Screenrant.com

Screenrant.com and USA Today we're given a joint exclusive last night in revealing an image of Mickey Rourke as the big baddy in 'Iron Man 2'.

Rourke is seen wearing an exo-skeleton with what look to be whip handles near his palms, thus solidifying that his character is (at this phase of the movie anyway) Whiplash. USA Today's writer-up confirms that Rourke is standing on the Monaco race track set that we saw photos of earlier this week.

And if that little power plant on Ivan Vanko's chest looks familiar, that's intentional.

"The technologies are definitely related," director Jon Favreau told USA Today. "That's part of the core theme of the film."

Click the thumbnail below for a medium-res version of the pic, or head over to Screenrant.com for a high-res look.

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

Hmmm.  I was really hoping to see Whiplash wearing some clothes in this movie.  The idea that the technology has been lifted from Stark's is a good one though - reminds me of the Armor Wars storyline from a few years back.

That was my first thought, too. I'm also thinking maybe as the movie goes on he may go the full armor route. The important question, though... Where's Scarlett?

My first thought on that outfit is from Running man.  When Jessie the Body puts on that stupid tech outfit to fight Arnold in the ring and then rips it off.  So far it looks stupid.

OK.  Looking at Roarke's face, could anybody else see him playing Mandarin?  Just a wierd thought.

Have to agree, I hope for more armor than this.  Perhaps this is early in the movie.

I think it looks fantastic!  This is clearly the most basic version of his costume, like his MARK 1.  I'm sure Justin Hammer will supe it up by the end of the movie.

It would be nice if he did get a half mask but it was all tech like Iron Man, with glowing eyes and such.

Wiseguy 6/10/2009 6:40:28 AM

I think it looks good. Maybe before he perfects his costume. But Whiplash (Backlash) always was semi naked so a full armor suit isn't called for anyway.

What I'm wondering is if they're turning this character into Crimsom Dynamo or is he going to be related to Anton (CD) and introduce him later on. They have the same last name but then again they've changed Whiplash's origin all around maybe Favreau is just merging the two characters.

And I didn't see any reference to him stealing Stark's tech. The original W made his own tech.

Looking forward to more

No, he wore a suit that pretty much covered his entire body for about 30 years before even going open-throated, and then topless gladiator S&M after that, and as I recall his tech was built by the Maggia's scientists.

@wiseguy - I keep hearing that they've rolled multiple characters into one.   So it's whiplash with, uh, whiplashes, and he's russian with some copied/stolen Stark Tech.  Also Sam Rockwell palying Justin Hammer would probbaly be how he got the tech in the first place.

I know (meaning I read online) that the character starts out in a Russian prison.  And with the orange jumpsuit-like pants this could be right after his release/escape.

Wiseguy 6/10/2009 7:42:19 AM

Ok, maybe I'm mistaken about his suit, but the only time I remember him fully clothed was when he became Backlash. But as far as the Maggia go, he was the scientist. He built the tech and weapons for them, I'm pretty sure about that.

I'm gonna have to dig through some old stuff to see if I have anything really old on him.

Wiseguy 6/10/2009 7:46:39 AM

Darthduck, I think you're right and makes sense now, they're using Crimsom Dynamo's last name (maybe as a way to intro him later), and Whiplash was American. So I think you're right.
