Hell Hath No Fury

Greetings, Maniacs, and welcome to another week of cutthroat Comicscape action! Late as usual, I realize the furious spell of controversy over the statue of Mary Jane Watson-Parker leaning over a laundry hamper wound down last month, but the storm over >the August cover of Heroes for Hire #13 hasn’t died just yet. The statue in question portrays Mary Jane leaning over a laundry hamper removing Spider-Man’s costume from the pile. Based on a drawing by Adam Hughes, it shows MJ with cleavage in full few, ass thrust horizontally, and a cute “Oh, you” look on her face as she peers over her shoulder. The Manga-style Heroes for Hire cover by Sana Takeda – a Japanese woman – shows Colleen Wing, Misty Knight, and Felicia Hardy – the Black Cat – bound by their hands in a circle, as the tentacles of the Brood reach for them. The tentacles drip ooze over the Black Cat’s cleavage as the top of Ms. Knight’s costume hangs open. They all look kind of tired and beaten. For those unaware, female bloggers and the mainstream media have angrily responded to both items, crying “Woman doing laundry” over the former and “Tentacle rape!” over the latter. Over at Newsarama, Joe Quesada noncommittally apologized for the Heroes for Hire cover, but only if anyone felt offended in the first place.
While the reaction to both of these pieces surprises me a bit, I agree to an extent. I find the Mary Jane statue pretty harmless. It looks like an old pin-up image. Given the extreme strains of pornography available on the net and other pressing issues facing women, I can’t raise much ire over the damn thing. It strikes me as another slightly risqué, overpriced statue from Marvel and Sideshow that only die-hard fans will buy (or have bought, as the pre-order sold out following the controversy). The idea of Mary Jane washing Spider-Man’s laundry – or, really, just finding it – hardly offends me. Sometimes I do the laundry and sometimes my wife does it. Convenience takes precedence over gender roles when doing chores in the Amacker household. I doubt many women would find the statue worth buying in the first place, but I fail to understand the sheer outrage leveled at it. But, the Heroes for Hire cover strikes me differently.
Know first that I find tentacle porn incredibly distasteful. I don’t care for much Manga or anime to begin with, absent Hellsing and a few others, but I don’t find tentacle rape cute or funny or ironic. I’ve turned off anime movies in the middle when some unsuspecting school girl in a sailor suit finds herself impaled by so many oozing appendages. Granted, a writer can certainly depict the act as consensual and remove rape from the equation, but I still don’t find this arrousing. But, I’m hardly one to judge anyone on their fantasies. I’ve made it clear in this column that I rarely object to pornography in and of itself. However, I draw the line at depictions of rape. I refuse to watch that kind of material, animated or not. But, let’s clarify the issue: the cover of Heroes for Hire #13 shows the Brood’s tentacles reaching for the women and sliming them, not raping them. This isn’t a replay of Urotsukidoji – a really awful anime that I stopped watchin halfway through – though it alludes to that particular subgenre of unsavory anime. To deny that allusion rings hopelessly naïve. While I wouldn’t say that the image violates the eyes and imagination of everyone that sees it, I don’t see a good reason for it. Heroes for Hire is not an adult title and the image feels out of place, if nothing else. But, no real women were hurt in the drawing. The story in question also features the characters chained up and threatened by the Brood, so the image isn’t entirely out of context. I don’t advocate censoring the cover or anything patently stupid or reactionary like that. I find the image kind of excessive, but free speech doesn’t end with my preferences.
Really, it strikes me as more of the same clueless attitude from an industry long unfriendly to women. I’ve written a couple of columns on the depiction of women in comics. If the comic industry wants to attract more female readers, it needs to grow up and stop relying on adolescent depictions of sexuality. Images of Witchblade getting out of the shower with bubbles covering all the right places won’t interest most women. If the industry wants to traffic in cheesecake images and erotica, fine. Porn has its place and I don’t tell Larry Flynt how to do his job. But, don’t complain when women find superhero comics distasteful. Please refrain from babbling about how all of the female heroes are actually “really strong women.” They don’t use their sexuality and feminine wiles to fight evil – publishers use them to sell comics to people not old enough to buy porn. Now, since the rise of blogging, the community of women that read comics has loosely united against the perceived rampant sexism in superhero comics. The response to DC Editor Eddie Berganza’s slightly patronizing column about Supergirl showed the force of fan-girls. I applaud those women for reading comics in the first place, as the medium can only grow by attracting more fans. They should tell publishers what they want. But, at the same time, the comic industry only owes readers what they’ll pay for. Female fans can blog all they want and whip themselves into a frenzy over a stupid statue or an admittedly distasteful cover. But, if enough people buy the stuff, Marvel will continue to produce it. No amount of fan-girl rage will change that. In the end, the blog frenzy just looks overblown, like an angry mob ready to lynch someone. Extremist and reactionary politics have never suited me. I think they enflame the target more than anything.
Comic fans control the industry, and those fans have rarely shown much regard to the sensibilities of women. Perhaps they should, but no one can force that change by complaining on LiveJournal. More importantly, no one has a right to demand that change. Marvel can publish whatever it wants. Hell, Rob Leifeld and Michael Turner still see work. Power Girl’s breasts keep getting bigger. That sounds a bit defeatist, but I don’t see the industry radically changing outside of a few minor concessions. Ultimately, if it offends you, don’t buy it. If you like, drop the publisher a little note letting them know you won’t purchase their products in the near future. I know I won’t add Heroes for Hire to my pull list anytime soon. Blog-rage will tell publishers how you feel, but if it’s that important to you, speak with your wallet. And, if you’re really passionate, publish comics to your own taste. Also, support independent comics that interest you. It’s all about the money.
I also have to comment on Joe Quesada’s professed innocence and ignorance about the whole thing. He claims to not have even known about the whole tentacle porn subgenre. I strongly disbelieve that. He’s a comic reader in an age where Manga and anime pervade geek culture like never before. Most people that read comics know about tentacle porn. Some find it arousing, some find it funny, and others (like me) find it distasteful. Professing total ignorance strikes me as naïve and dishonest. If Quesada really wanted to quell the controversy, he should replace the image and apologize for real. Or, if he truly doesn’t care, he should at least come out swinging and state that Marvel understands the image, they’ll publish the book if they want to, and anyone that doesn’t like it shouldn’t buy it. I really hate noncommittal apologies. Don’t say you’re sorry the other person’s feelings were hurt. Say you’re sorry for what you did and make amends. If you’re not, stand up for yourself and your company. If Quesada dismisses his detractors and plays dumb, he’ll only make them angrier. Granted, they won’t be happy if he stands up for the image, but at least it’ll be honest.
That’s it for this week, guys and girls. Thanks for reading.

Ed Brubaker’s run continues on Uncanny, making it the first time I’ve ever added this series to my pull list. There are still plenty of other mutie titles to make fun of, however.

I like Ed Brubaker, I just wish his year-long arc would have had more closure. It felt like the first part of a film trilogy. Hopefully, I don't have to wait three years for the second part.
I'll also touch on a couple of things you said up there. First off, regardless of whether or not Quesada was being disingenuine (is that even a word?) is irrelevant. If the man says he is unaware of it, I'll accept it until proof can be shown otherwise. I have hard time believing there are twenty-somethings that have never seen Star Wars, but they exist.
The real issue is women getting pissed over how fictional women are portrayed. I hate to say it, but most of the stuff they seem to get pissed about is close to the same thing I see on the cover of Cosmopolitan every month (minus the slimy tentacles). That magazine is a woman's magazine, aimed at the twenty-something female who wants to bind her man into a commitment and learn the secrets of simultaneous orgasms. Not once, though, have I seen a single blog about how unfair or sexist THAT rag is. So I say equality is a good thing. While trying to wake people up to the evils of sexism in comics, lets do the same to the other publications. THAT would be equal.
On a final note: Um, the talking to yourself thing was little awkward and creepy. :D
