Here Today!

A couple of weeks back one of loyal readers, ‘swansong’, posted a blog about several Special Editions he was looking for. One of which I had. I thought the special edition was still available for purchase in retail stores. Let’s face it, the words “Special Edition” are usually just a marketing ploy to get a few extra dollars out of us for features that should already be on the DVD. The Special Edition DVD in question was John Carpenter’s ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ (2 Disc set). The film is one awesome action packed, dark, magical comedy. In my opinion, there hasn’t been a film like it since, nor will there ever be. The second disc (omitted on the single disc standard edition) is a time capsule of ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ trailers, magazine articles, TV spots, deleted scenes and most importantly the music video for the film by John Carpenter himself (trust me, it is hysterical). This disc is now lost for the fan like ‘swangsong’ who didn’t know about it or the fan that hasn’t discovered the film yet.

So the term Special Edition may actually have some meaning to it after all. Is there actually a time limit for Special Editions? I wrote a few months back on the subject of the Special Editions entitled “Which one”. In that column I discussed which Special Editions of ‘Caligula’ and ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ were actually worth our money. Grant it ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ may have not been the best movie but its ‘Power Cosmic Edition’ was a tour de force of Special Features. Much like that of the 2001 Special Edition release of ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ it has (had) the Special Features any true fan would want. Those few extra dollars may actually be worth it (on the day the title is released) if that Special Edition is going to disappear.

Swansong, that Special Edition of ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ is out there. Search EBay for it or look on Amazon (the catalogue # is 2001438). What I want from all of you Maniacs is to list some of the other (in the comment section) Special Editions that you have in your personal libraries so we can keep each other informed about Special Editions we might have missed or never knew about. They are, after all, here today and on EBay tomorrow.

Outside of the Special Edition of ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ I’ll put another title out there that existed. The Limited Edition (30,000 copies) Two Disc ‘Army of Darkness’ (released in 1999) which is not the ‘Boomstick Edition’ (released in 2003). It has both cuts (theatrical and director’s) of the film with alternate dialogue, endings and additional scenes. It is pure gold.

I like it...I like..

Anyways, there are and forever will be rip-off's of special editions like Special Director's Cut and the overused, Unrated Cut.

Like the Evil Dead Series the original Dawn of the Dead has been raped beyond belief, but back two or three years ago they finally released a 4 disc Ultimate Edition set of the original Dawn of the Dead.

1st disc is the U.S. Theatrical Version running at a time of 127min with commentary by George A. Romero, Tom Savini and Chris Romero, along with Gallery's, T.V spots, original music by Goblin and a Comic Book Preview.

2nd disc is the 'Extended Version' running at 139min with commentary by producer Richard Rubinstein, a funny mall commercial and more galleries.

3rd disc running at 118min is the European Version which was edited by Dario Argento, with commentary by the actors David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger and Gaylen Ross.

Finally the 4th disc is nothing but Documentaries. A 'All New' The Dead Will Walk featuring interviews with cast and other crew members. The original documentary which was filmed during the making of. A On Set home movies and a Monroeville Mall Tour with Actor Ken Foree.

Now, it seems you can buy all of this for under $60, give or take. If you are a fan of the original then I would highly suggest getting this and I do not see them trying to make more money off of this movie with a box set like this.

well, after hearing of a 2 disk set for Ginger Snaps that was exclusive to Canadians, and I wouldnt settle for the bare bones disk us Americans were forced to swallow, I waited.
I waited till I drove through British Columbia and stopped in Kamloops at the local Best Buy and found it... the 2 disk Ginger Snaps SE... much better than the american disk... God bless the Canuks.
the sequels were released as SE's down south in the states but for some unknown reason, the original movie SE is only available in Canada!

I actually picked up that special edition of Big Trouble in Little China when it first came out. I shelled out like $30 for it, but am glad that I have it now that it's out of print.

One special edition DVD that I regret never buying is the Night of the Living Dead 30th Anniversary Edition. Hopefully i'll stumble across it again someday.

Big Trouble in Little China (two disc) Spec. Ed. - got it, love it, only paid $10 for it. And I'd swear I've seen those still for sale in stores in my area for the same price. Anyone want me to check?

"You know what old Jack Burton always says at a time like this?"

Big Trouble In Little China is certainly a one-of-a-kind movie. But who'd expect any less from John Carpenter, who's worst films are still fun.

What is the difference from the Boomstick edition? I liked it just fine. Still need to pick up that Evil Dead set that just came out.

The Dawn of the Dead sounds awesome. I'll have to keep an eye out for it!

There's a SE for Ginger Snaps? I'll have to hunt online. I really liked both of those movies.

I'm not a big fan of the collector's tins, but the Hellraiser one is great and as a special bonus with the first movie was the part 2. The Heathers tin is also great. Those are the only tins I own, but well worth the money there. I'll search and see if I have any others. I know a good one I don't have that is pretty rare from what I've heard is for House and again buried is the sequel on the other side if memory serves me right.

If you guys have read my previous comments you know I'm not a big fan of these special editions unless they really ARE special editions. Someone pointed out LOTR's were done very well and I still remember T2 special edition (the first one) that really was special with the alternate ending added to the film when you unlocked the easter egg. Granted when T2 special edition DVD came out it was the beginning of the DVD's and before hollywood saw they would make more money with them.

Big trouble sounds like something I should check out, I'm sure you can find that on e-bay.

Merin, I totally agree about John Carpenter. Even his really bad movies are still fun to watch. I just wish people would stop remaking his movies, I mean butchering his movies. This way instead of collecting the profit from these he would get back to making more.

To add to Hobbs note, I'll say that there is some good stuff on the Memento SE discs... but if you are not a masochist, the menu format is a PAIN IN THE ASS! Oh yeah, sure - it's fun at first, but after a few minutes, you will be that DVD's bitch unless you have some well explained directions on-hand.

You know, speaking of the Special Edition treatment, It really sux that the ORIGINAL "Teen Wolf" doesn't have a 2 disc DVD release with extras and is lumped in with the abomination "Teen Wolf Too". That is just so wrong.
