HEROES: Angels and Monsters

Who Doesn't Have a Super Power?

One of the biggest problems with Heroes this season is the size of the cast. The writers still haven’t found a way to make all of the characters have any emotional impact. The show would be much stronger with only a few heroes that all get great development and drama. So, knowing this, what do the writers do? They add even more characters to the show! With that said the new character twist at the end of the episode involving Linderman and Peter, Nathan, and Sylar’s father is interesting. It’s been known for some time that Robert Forster would appear in the series this season so now we know who he is playing.

Along with the poor character development, the plot just seems to meander from episode to episode. There’s a few minutes with the really played out future plot thread, the villains plot thread, and the various family situations. Things happen, but not really. On top of that, this week Hiro and Ando are solidified as the Hanna Barbera characters of the series. Sylar was a fantastic villain in season one even if his end was anticlimactic, now who knows what he is. His character has been stripped of what made him interesting. Sure he will probably return to what made him interesting but how long are viewers expected to wait? Also, we were led to believe that these heroes were an X-Men type of human evolution back in Season One. In just a few short moments in this week’s episode,e all of that was made moot, at least for most of the characters if not all of them. Speaking of character Mohinder has taken quite a turn. There are villains and heroes and it appears he is becoming just a monster – a monster that kills to survive. He seems similar to The Lizard from the Spider-Man mythology except that he’s more spider-like. This should be an interesting direction for him but it’s just not being executed in an exciting or intriguing way. Now, if Mohinder actually rids the show of Maya, then he will be a little more appreciated on the show.

The majority of this episode was spent introducing us to more new characters and hinting via Daphne’s scene with her boss that even more new characters are yet to come. Based on the season so far, this is not a good thing. This isn’t even talking about the mess that Claire’s biological mother gets into with yet another character. There has to be more to Heroes than just the fan service of showing a few scenes with new characters using their powers. The idea of Daphne being responsible for putting together a super group of villains with Linderman (sort of) leading as a sort of Magneto character sounds fun as far as battle scenes but the idea of getting to know even more characters when the ones already on the show aren’t extremely interesting is very scary.

Last episode did it for me. I'm off the Heroes bandwagon, gonna lower my expectations for eac episode from here on out. This is starting to go the way of Smallville for me (1st I liked it, then I simply watched for seeing it and now I don't watch)but I hope it doesn't get Smallville bad where then I have to stop seeing it.

The episode was weak although that Puppet Muster guy for next ep looks cool. Ando dying would've been cool if we didn't know that it's very hard for someone to die on this show and we've seen him in the future battling Hiro.

Sylar has telekinisis power and push people like he did to Peter. Yet when they arrive at BlackHole POwer guy he's "stand back, bla bla". How bout you do the same thing you did to Peter to him?
Peter breaks Sylar's neck and Sylar is up a few seconds later no prob. Sylar slams Peter to the glass wall and Peter is knocked out and is out long enough for Mrs. Petrelli to put some stuff on his head? Guess Peter's healing ability didn't work that scene. Remember when people used to go crazy with Lost vs. Heroes? Lost won.

I so agree, Hanso. This season has been a confusing and unsatisfying jumble of plot and character changes. It's like the writers completely threw out the character / plot guidebook and decided to wing it episode by episode. Lost has been able to keep track of a large cast and allow for character development while keeping each character's distinctive personality traits. Heroes doesn't even seem to be trying for consistency.

I'm sorry. Hiro did WHAT? And with what kind of lame-ass line to try to make it OK?

This episode had a lot of potential. The Linderman storyline was explained in a way that grew logically from the show's past. As much as the Suresh story irritates me, it's at least moving in a direction that will have some drama to it. The Sylar thing I'm willing to accept as long as the narrator quits referring to Noah Bennett as "HRG". I completely dig the idea of Daphne assembling a bunch of super-villains. But there are way more problems with this season.

As stated, there are just too damn many characters, and they're not being handled consistently. Shifting a character's moral alignment is fine, but you have to show good reason why it's happening. "Because Angela Petrelli said so" is not a good reason. Even if the actress did play a Klingon once.

The science fiction easter eggs are fun and all, but it would really be nice if they served a purpose for the greater story. Bruce Boxleitner was on screen for all of, what, three minutes? And then Senator Nathan hires away the governor's top advisor/sex kitten without so much as a by-your-leave? The guy from "Greatest American Hero" is on screen for about as long as it takes to find him on IMDb before Nikki-I-mean-Jessica-I-mean-Tracy goes all Ice Queen on him. Numerous plot twists seem to happen especially for the purpose of making a Star Wars reference. Knock it off and get on with the story, already.

Speaking of getting on with the story, have the writers completely forgotten about the dangling threads from the strike-shortened Season 2? Why has there been no mention of Peter's Irish girlfriend who got trapped in one of the bad futures? And what about Molly? Seeing her in the future was neat and all, but what's she doing in the present? Her two dads sure don't seem to be doing a lot of parenting at the moment, and her ability would surely seem useful to anyone, say, trying to bring together a bunch of supervillains.

Finally, that bit with Hiro just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can see where they may have built in a trick on this, but I'm not sure if that makes it any better. They spent the entire episode showing Hiro's power from Ando's POV, so I'd call it likely that next week we'll learn Hiro had switch the sword out for a theatre prop and slipped a few blood packs under Ando's shirt, and everyone lives happily ever after to stab each other again. But I still don't really like it.

I really wanted to resist turning against this show this season. At the moment, I don't really want to resist anymore.

I'm probably not as dissapointed with the show as some, because I never regarded Heros as high as many others do. I've always felt that the show seemed familiar because it seemed like the major plots were already done in the X-Men. Legacy virus story line? I know Tim Kring claims to have never read the comics though. Heros overall has always rated about a B in my mind. While I will purchase the Blu-Rays of Lost, I don't even buy the DVDs of Heros.

I haven't abandoned all hope yet. They pulled things together last season. I'm hoping they do so this season, too. I agree with the general consensus here that there are just too many characters floating around, and not enough development of them. William Katt and Bruce Boxleitner were on for, what, 2 minutes each? Speedster girl is just annoying. Let her and Knox get killed off and let Hiro & Ando get on with trying to save the world. Speaking of Hiro, I gasped for just a second when *SPOILER ALERT* he stabbed Ando until I realized a) he's not really going to kill him and b) we've already seen Ando alive in the future. *END SPOILER* Then they bring back Monroe/Kensei only to have him get kidnapped. I don't mind Robert Forester being brought in as Papa Petrelli, because at least he has some relevance to the story. What kind of power does he have that Papa Parkman is kow-towing to him like that? I liked the reveal of the secret behind Linderman. I knew something was up. Finally, and I'm struggling a little with this, how long are we expected to believe that the public isn't aware of people running around with superpowers? In all the time these events have been going on, we're expected to believe that no one has tried to make a fast buck displaying genuine powers? Apparently there's a whole "cantina" of people who will be Specials-for-Hire, but not one reporter has run a story on the place? Not one security camera has recorded footage of even 10% of what we've seen people doing in public places? I suppose this is where suspension of disbelief comes in, but it's stretching credibility at this point with the number of people we've seen running around in public displaying powers.

This show has definitely jumped the shark. I completely agree with Lackey. What the writers don't seem to understand is that we all liked the show for the character arcs. But the progression used to be slow and steady. Now it's a free-for-all and no one is safe; Mohinder is a spider/lizard/fly man, Hiro kills his best friend, Angela Petrelli is everyone's mother, they're all science experiments, and no one ever dies and doesn't come back.

Do yourselves a favor, Heroes writers; kill Maya, make Sylar bad again, and quit adding characters who are not interesting!!!
darkheart00 10/15/2008 9:13:19 AM
There was only one single moment of this episode that was not pure suckage. *Spoiler* When HRG confronts the vortex villain and then from left field tells him to kill Sylar. That was classic. *Spoiler* The rest of this episode and season is flat as hell. I sure hope they can turn it around. Oh yeah, I would only change one thing to your suggestion hammer. "Do yourselves a favor, Heroes writers; have Maya get NAKED for no particular reason (good grief she's hot), make Sylar bad again, and quit adding characters who are not interesting!!!
musikmann2000 10/15/2008 9:28:05 AM
Darkheart, while the scene you mention with HRG was a good twist, I had a MAJOR problem with it. Did the writers forget that the first (or close to the first) person that Sylar killed was a woman with super-hearing?!?!? How is it that he couldn't hear HRG and Vortex guy talking to each other????
swisshammer 10/15/2008 9:59:17 AM
Darkheart: That's what I meant to say. Or more specifically, "Get her naked, then kill her off." The smootch-fest between her and Mohinder doesn't count. Musicmann: Totally true. I thought of that as well. God this show is getting bad. But continuity has never been their strong suit.

The addition of some of the new characters has been mixed. We need more villains than just Sylar and Adam Munroe, even the X-Men had greater nemesis' than Magneto. The show is still young where it can switch it up and w/no danger of another shortened season they can fix it during the 2nd half of the season and return to what made it so great to begin with. Don't hop off the bandwagon, many people did this with Lost and now that has been better than ever. Robert Forster wasn't that great of a twist *well sort of given his current condition* it's been known for months that he was going to be Papa Petrelli. Who doesn't like the idea of two companies battling it out? The thought that some of the powers were genetically enhanced has taken some of the fun out of the show and I find it funny that once again Peter is the favored child since he was born w/powers as to Nathan who was given thru science experiments. I'm looking forward to Mohinder-Fly's final transformation and to see if he comes back to the light side or if it's too late. Two Big Questions... What was Kaito's Power? When is Richard Roundtree coming back? That was/is a loose thread that I never got..
