One of the biggest problems with Heroes this season is the size of the cast. The writers still haven’t found a way to make all of the characters have any emotional impact. The show would be much stronger with only a few heroes that all get great development and drama. So, knowing this, what do the writers do? They add even more characters to the show! With that said the new character twist at the end of the episode involving Linderman and Peter, Nathan, and Sylar’s father is interesting. It’s been known for some time that Robert Forster would appear in the series this season so now we know who he is playing.
Along with the poor character development, the plot just seems to meander from episode to episode. There’s a few minutes with the really played out future plot thread, the villains plot thread, and the various family situations. Things happen, but not really. On top of that, this week Hiro and Ando are solidified as the Hanna Barbera characters of the series. Sylar was a fantastic villain in season one even if his end was anticlimactic, now who knows what he is. His character has been stripped of what made him interesting. Sure he will probably return to what made him interesting but how long are viewers expected to wait? Also, we were led to believe that these heroes were an X-Men type of human evolution back in Season One. In just a few short moments in this week’s episode,e all of that was made moot, at least for most of the characters if not all of them. Speaking of character Mohinder has taken quite a turn. There are villains and heroes and it appears he is becoming just a monster – a monster that kills to survive. He seems similar to The Lizard from the Spider-Man mythology except that he’s more spider-like. This should be an interesting direction for him but it’s just not being executed in an exciting or intriguing way. Now, if Mohinder actually rids the show of Maya, then he will be a little more appreciated on the show.
The majority of this episode was spent introducing us to more new characters and hinting via Daphne’s scene with her boss that even more new characters are yet to come. Based on the season so far, this is not a good thing. This isn’t even talking about the mess that Claire’s biological mother gets into with yet another character. There has to be more to Heroes than just the fan service of showing a few scenes with new characters using their powers. The idea of Daphne being responsible for putting together a super group of villains with Linderman (sort of) leading as a sort of Magneto character sounds fun as far as battle scenes but the idea of getting to know even more characters when the ones already on the show aren’t extremely interesting is very scary.
