HEROES Askew

Date: Sunday, August 05, 2007

You’re either a part of the “Askew” experience or you're not, a die hard Kevin Smith fan said to me once. My answer was, well, I guess I’m not. When the original Clerks came out, I didn’t really like the film. I thought it was overrated. Not long ago, I watched it again. With realistic expectations, I liked it better, but overall, I much prefer the second one. Most of Smith’s good projects fall into the “in joke” genre of filmmaking, much like “Family Guy” falls heavily into the “in joke” genre of TV. His jokes are mostly funny to members of his age group that also happen to appreciate geeky things like comics and science fiction films. This style of filmmaking can easily be consider a crutch, but the more I look into Smith’s projects, the more I don’t care because I’m in the group of people he is writing for and I find many of the “in jokes” to be quite hilarious. I especially liked the whole riff on Lord of the Rings and Star Wars in Clerks 2. The thing that really finally really put me in the Smith camp though was the Spider-Man/Black Cat mini-series he wrote. I really got angry about that series because it stated with a bang and the final books in the series didn’t come until a year later. But, once I was finally able to read the story to its completion,I was a Smith fan.

Smith had been attached to several different super hero franchises being brought to the big screen and I was excited for every rumor I heard. After seeing the final result of Superman Returns, I have to wonder just how much more interesting that film would have been had Smith been behind it. Smith has a fairly flat amateurish directing style, but I believe he really understands what it takes to tell a modern super hero story, and I wish he would have at least written the script for the Superman film even if he didn’t direct it.

The exciting news for Smith fans is that we are finally going to get to see what Smith can do with at least the idea of a super hero outside of the comic book form. The producers of the hit series Heroes have announced that Smith will be behind the camera for an episode of Heroes: Origins, the miniseries that will run during the winter hiatus of the regular series. As far as I know ,Smith didn’t write the episode, which would have been awesome, but at least he’s directing. I have more hope for this filler series than I once did. Smith will actually be directing the very first Origins episode.

This week’s picks are Eureka, Flash Gordon, and Masters of Science Fiction. This week’s Masters of Science Fiction features Locke, Terry O’Quinn from LOST. I’m hoping this episode will be a little more sci-fi than the premiere. Better watch it before it’s gone! Eureka has been extremely solid since the premiere and is my favorite show of the week, even more that The 4400, but these two are pretty close to the top.

Monday

KYLE XY (ABCFAMILY, 8PM EST) Ghost in the Machine

Lori’s decisions come back to haunt her while on a camping expedition with Kyle,Jessi, Declan, and Amanda when they stumble upon the ruins of Zzyzx in the woods.

Tuesday

ON THE LOT (FOX, 8PM PST)

The final four filmmakers screen their films based on the log-line from the internet log-line contest. I personally didn’t much like the log-line but maybe the films will surprise me.

EUREKA (SCIFI, 9PM PST) Duck, Duck, Goose!

Space debris begins crashing down on Eureka during the high school science fair.

ROOM 401 (MTV, 10PM PST)

A prank show where people get scarred. Well, it’s on TV! Pranks include “O Negative”, “Just a Trim”, and “Free Delivery”.

Wednesday

RESCUE ME (FX, 10PM PST) Solo

Janet plots revenge when she learns what Tommy did with the baby, Franco questions his marriage proposal to Natalie in light of Alicia and Keela’s return, and Tommy faces his ghosts.

The heroes are divided into pairs for a competition involving Dr. Dark.

BURN NOTICE (USA, 10PM PST) Broken Rules

Michael poses as a thief to infiltrate a gang that has been terrorizing a local merchant. Michael also blackmails an agent into handing over information about the burn notice.

MIND CONTROL WITH DARREN BROWN (SCIFI, 10PM PST) exotic Dancers

The host tries his skills on a psychologist in New York; twins are profiled in regards to their psychological connections; and an experiment involving subway commuters is attempted.

Friday

DOCTOR WHO (FOX, 9PM PST) The Lazarus Experiment

The Doctor brings Martha home when they uncover a plot involving Martha’s family and a genetic manipulation device, operated by Professor Lazarus.

FLASH GORDON (SCIFI, 10PM PST) Pilot

Flash, a small town athlete, is thrust into sci-fi adventure. This week, Flash wins a marathon and learns some secrets about his family. So far, it doesn’t sound exciting but I’m hoping for the best. If the creators truly used the 1980 film as a model, we could really have a winner here.

Saturday

MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION (ABC, 9:00PM PST) The Awakening

A retired military UFO investigator is called back to duty when soldiers in Iraq are unable to identify some corpses that don’t seem human. The corpses also don’t seem dead, and anyone making eye contact within them instantly goes catatonic. This week’s episode is based on the 1970 short story by Howard Fast.

STIR OF ECHOES: THE HOMECOMING (SCIFI, 9PM PST)

This sequel to the film starring Kevin Bacon follows an Iraq war veteran who is plagued by terrifying visions after returning home. This film stars Rob Lowe.

In the season finale, Butchie and Kai get a pleasant surprise and a bizarre parade bends it’s way down the beach.

Thats great news for Heroes fans! I love Smith, I'm definately in the Askew Crew. I find him funny, and Especially talendedd due to the fact that he just did it. He bashed his way into Hollywood doing what he wanted to do. And because it was different, and he stuck to his roots he made a nice career for himself, and brought some great actors up with him(not Aflec though, he owes us for that) although Aflec always has a good self depricating sence of humor in Smiths movies. Ah look at me I'm gushing like a little girl. Any way I'm stoked for Smith's Heroes, AND I hope I don't have to read a lot of jealous armchair directors and writers bash the hell out of Smith on this board.

KS has a really good view for superheroes and what the camera can do for them. He keeps things pretty well grounded in a genre that can succumb to ridiculous flights of fancy with a lesser director. So, as an Askew man, I'm looking forward to his contribution.

Yeah, I`m definitely an "Askew Man". Sounds like a cologne. Anyway, Kev Smith is a funny, smart dude. He is the type of guy you can just stand around shooting the shit with for hours about comics, movies, tv. (geeky things) And his self deprecating humor is just an added bonus to his personality. This is good news. There are plenty of people on this site that can`t stand Smith, but to them I say Snucthie Boochie

You’re either a part of the “Askew” experience or your (you're NOT your) not, a....
Stephen, you are a journalist. Please, PLEASE uphold a standard of excellence when writing your articles, with a special eye turned to spelling and grammar. Otherwise, good article.
I should apologize for that mini rant, but after coming out of a yogurt store yesterday where one of their marketing pieces stated that "eating our yogurt promotes healthy teethes", I have been a little on edge.

I think I'd be in the "askew" crowd

And actually I had the opposite reaction to the Clerks movies. I loved them both, but I liked the original Clerks just a little bit better than Clerks II.

Rosario Dawson was awesome and here character was probably my favorite in the series. But overall I thought the love story in second movie was a little too convensional in its execusion.

While the original Clerks, more than any other Smith movie had the embodied the true Indie spirit, breaking out of narrative norms. for me it was the comedy miovuie equivalent to Sienfeld.

Also, the geek humor rang a little truer in the original. Most LOTR movie fans I know are not particularly religious, even if the movies and books have religious themes. And the fans of the original Transformers series who posted on the intrernet were wary of where Bay would take the show.

And there was no mention of Buffy, Angel or the Firefly cancellation. The three pilars of most geek speak I've been involved in.

I am of course nit picking for that last bit, and mostly joking about the geek humor stuff, mostly. I love that he does the geek in jokes and does them brilliantly. That was also what I loved about Knocked Up and How met your Mother

BTW: Doctor Who is on the SciFi channel if it's also on Fox that would be cool, but I wanted to avoid confusion if it was miss print.

And how does Jekyll not make the watchables cut on Saturdays along with Masters of Science Fiction?

Does KS have to bring his stench to my one of my top favorite TV shows?

gauleyboy420 • Aug 06, 2007, 12:13pm •
lister,
looks like youre outnumbered here. I think most Heroes fans are happ to see KS directing an episode.

lister • Aug 06, 2007, 12:37pm •
So what do you suggest gauley? That I not express my opinion because it differs from the pod? Go toke up so you can make it seem that Bob and Jay are funnier than they really are and leave me to my own voice, OK? :)

gauleyboy420 • Aug 06, 2007, 01:34pm •
lister,
Not suggesting anything,
Just sayin thanks for bringing yor negativity here. ooooo, a pot smoking jab at me, now I'm speachless.
Maybe you should toke up and mellow out. by the way I your smiley threw me, are you joking or are you being an asshat? oh well, I'm all for opinions, Lord knows I got tons of them, just sayin KS knows Superheroes and directing, so give him a chance before you bash him on Heroes. (hmmm I feel like someone gave me that lecture here on mania before...)

lister • Aug 06, 2007, 02:23pm •
Are you really unable to recognize a smiley-face-sarcasm-disclaimer?

I think all that 420 you take such pride in has made you a little paranoid!

:)

Seriously though... I have more faith in Smith on a superhero project than on one of his comedies. I just wish he was only writing it and not directing it. The latter is his weak point. But hey, this may be the right project for his limited skillset.

I'd still rather have Joss on the job!
