Heroes: Brave New World Review

The Carnival Opens for One Last Time

There’s something to be said for consistency right? Heroes is all about the build up and not much at all about the finale. This season of the show has been building and building to what should have been an amazing climax. Samuel worked throughout the season to build his family while the heroes found themselves coming back together via their own stories that eventually intertwine. Some actors get almost nothing to do throughout the season such as Ali Larter and others, such as Masi Oka get way too much to do. Hiro has really run his course. His journey comes to an end in the season finale so hopefully he’ll step back a bit and let some other character have more screen time. Even Ando would be more interesting than Hiro at this point. Hiro does get some nice emotional beats that finish up his story for the season. As nice as those moments are they don’t make his character any less annoying.

So Samuel announced his endgame to his “family” in last week’s episode after burying Claire and Noah in one of the carnival trailers. He planned to take the carnival to central park in New York City to reveal who he and his people really are. What’s a little unclear in the finale is why exactly he wants to kill so many people especially so many “specials”. He gains power from having other special people near him so by the time the carnival hits New York he can do virtually anything he wants to do with his abilities. In the city, he forces Emma to attract even more specials from all over the city. If his endgame is to open a giant crater and kill everyone, won’t he kill all of his family too? Was he suicidal due to the rejection from the love of his life? His motivations are never made completely clear throughout the season and in the season finale, things don’t get any clearer.

So, if the ending ties up way to easily and the villain’s motivations aren’t as clear as they could have been at least the final battles were cool right? The final battle here is actually a big step up from the weak finishes to the past seasons of Heroes. The faceoff between Samuel and Peter was exciting and featured some good enough FX for TV. Peter played it smart and found himself on equal footing with Samuel. The combination of Hiro and Ando’s abilities in their small part of the battle was also clever and entertaining. On the downside, Nikki seems to get a few scenes in this episode so we just don’t forget she exists and Sylar, being a hero now, is a little weak. He can’t be the big bad villain in every story arc but he just doesn’t work as a hero. The only possible exception might be if he’s a super violent Punisher type that kills the bad guys. That might be interesting for a few episodes before he turns back bad. Matt Parkman’s involvement was poorly executed as well. He gave some very specific instructions to Multiple Man that just so happened to work at the right time. Some parts of the final battle were a lot of fun and others were either unnecessary or poorly conceived.

Robert Knepper is terrible at accents but he was awesome this season as the cartoonish over the top villain. He’s getting typecast now having played two great villains first in Prison Break and then in Heroes. Is that really a bad thing when he’s so good at playing the sleazy bad guy? With all of its flaws this is still the best season overall and season finale since season one. The cliffhanger ending was fantastic and it sets the stage for what could be a really interesting series reboot this fall if the show comes back. Claire gets a nice nostalgic call back to Season One that makes for a nice capper to the episode.

I actually thought this was one of the best finale episodes Heroes has done.  I think your critique about Samuel killing everyone is incorrect.  He has shown fine control over his abilities both in killing his brother w/ a small piece of dirt and then the precision burial of the trailer Claire and Noah were in.  He would have kept his flock intact just fine.  He wasn't drawing specials to the park he was drawing, to use Xmen parlance, flatscans to their deaths.

I don't understand the Hiro hate, i know that in previous seasons his comic relief bunglings grated on some people but the writers have dropped most of that, or at least muffled it.

I will say i had the same reaction to the Parkman/Multiple-man thing.  His instructions were to out himself and help Bennet?  I just couldn't swallow that one.

Other than that this was a very solid episode for me.  B, maybe inching into B .  Which is all i expect from Heroes, so i'm satisfied.

Where's the Fringe review?  Spartacus blows and everybody pretty much agrees but that got a review this week.

I thought this was better than last year's finale. I think the problem is too many characters to deal with. If Heroes is picked up for another season they need to scale back on the multible storylines or split the season in half and feature 2 or 3 characters in one half and the rest of the characters in the other half.

This was as good as, if not better than the season 1 finale.

Not Great, but MUCH better than I expected.

Parkman is getting more and more annoying...

I wanna see BadA$$ Hiro...

I LOVE Sylar as a Hero, LOVE IT!!!! maybe give him a mean streak...

Peter didn't act like a wuss for the last two episodes, that was good...

I like that Claire exposed the specials.. I liked the refrence to the first episode "That was attempt #..."

The ending, got me interested in another season, which until the last 3 episodes I didn't care about at all.

I didn't realize the Cello player only attracted specials. I thought only the "Family" was special, and the others were regular humans.

Glad Samuel stayed alive, I'd like to see him come back again.

how was Peter flying? if he's still only a one power at a time dude then he should've had only Matt's power... but all of a sudden Peter and Sylar are at the carnival quick fast(Correct me if I'm wrong but I though Matt was in LA and the carnival was in Central Park, NY)... then all of a sudden he's flying down to tackle Samuel... now i understand that by tackling(physical contact) Samuel he takes his power and blocks Sam's ground attack by using it against him... but how was he able to fly... did i miss something here... was there a transfer of power when Sylar told him that he(Sylar) was the one that saves the girl... and from that Pete's power was fixed... what did i miss... please fill me in... other than that i liked this episode...

This finale was prolly the best since the first season's.  Sylar as a hero is excellent!  Something I've been wanting the writers to do for a while.. And they did it!  Hence the volume 'Redemption"  Also Peter has stepped it up big time this season.. Not whining.. trying to figure out who he is.. all that emo crap.  Also Claire exposing them brings so many possibilites to the table.  I hope they renew it for one more season.  They have more room to work if the writers keep on this creative track they've been on.

Good ending to an entertaining season. Interested to see how things shape up now that claire outted specials, though we have been down this road somewhat last year with the hunter and the government program. But i would have been tuning into to next season anyway.

I didnt mind the Parkman storyline, i kinda like his character, and you cant tell me that his bad-ass imprisonment of sylar wasnt an improvement\evolution for his character. He strikes me, more than any of the characters, as a guy who is trying to live with (or in spite of) his abilities - which was the original premiss of the show.  And i wouldnt freak out about him programing multiple man guy - matt could have easily gone into his head, saw the truth for what it was and then programed him to make it right....

As for Peter traveling - he doesnt have the flight ability anymore, but i'm pretty certain that sylar does...and i didnt get the impression that he just "flew" at samuel, just seemed like a tackle to me.

Overall, i liked it. Sure it could have been better - so can any show, but it could have been worse (it has been in the past - remember the mexican wonder twins!). To be honest, i've liked the premeses of every season - from the dueling companies of season 2 to the covert gvment team of season 3, and now the group of outcast misfits...its all been there, just handled poorly in some cases.

I dont know where they go from here, i'd like to see them get back to some kind of Company set-up...but whatever...

My family and I enjoyed this finale.  I wanted MORE Sylar kicking butt and really enjoyed him and Peter working well together.

It looked to me that Peter flew into Samuel, but I have to assume he got that power from Sylar...speaking of my fav 'special', why did he allow the puppet master to freeze him?  I thought Sylar didn't need to 'move' to attack somebody?

Hiro's ending was special and very touching.  We love Hiro, but agree we can move on to other 'Heroes'.

And the ending was clevar.  Was nice to get a nod back to season 1.

peter's power may be in remembering people like originally. Ive hoped thats how they would evolve his power. Still only one power at a time but can swap as needed.

Where was the most powerful hero of all! THE HAITIAN! He could have stopped Samuel and ended this whole thing months ago!
