"Heroes: Company Man"

By: STEPHEN LACKEY

OK, I may have to take a break from reviewing Heroes for a while.  After all, how many ways can I come with to say just how good each episode is from week to week?  I actually won’t stop reviewing it though, because solid television like this needs to be written about and discussed because it doesn’t come along all that often.

This episode changes our perspective somewhat as a part of the series.  Before we knew no more about HRG and “The Company” than our heroes, but now via flashback, we know a great deal about HRG but most of what we learn wasn’t shared with the rest of the characters.  It’s not unheard of in this series as we always remember what the Haitian has made so many characters forget, but it’s a more dramatic plot device in this episode than in previous installments.

In “Company Man” Ted and Matt pull a B&E at HRG’s house in search of some kind of clue about the mysterious man and the company that he works for.  While checking out a laptop computer, they discuss taking HRG hostage at the paper company.  Just then Mr. Horn Rimmed Glasses shows up at the house with his family.  Matt’s instinct is to leave but Ted convinces him to stay and take the whole family hostage.  Matt is a good guy who just wants to understand what’s happened to him while Ted is a man nearly out of his head from killing his wife with this new ability and he wants revenge along with answers.  So, they do take the family hostage and a series of events splits Ted and Matt up with Matt going to the paper company to retrieve information (and tranquilizers to be used on Ted) about Ted and Matt while Ted watches over the family.  Matt wants answers but he sees that the whole situation has spiraled out of control and he wants to end it before someone who can’t heal gets hurt.

So, we end up with the unlikely duo of Matt and HRG.  Matt reads HRG’s mind and begins to understand that while HRG works for a shady organization that may be responsible for the new abilities he and Ted have gained HRG is also a caring man who has worked his whole life to protect Claire from this company.  HRG’s caring for Claire has made him conflicted over what he’s been doing, but only just now I guess because it wasn’t so long ago that he was ready to cut some of these special people open.  While it may have just fully manifested itself the conflict within HRG has been growing inside him for years as we learn from multiple flashbacks.  We see HRG as a dedicated member of the company ready to protect the world from the changes in the human species.  We also meet his first partner, Claude, the invisible man.  The first point of conflict from HRG comes when his boos (Eric Roberts) orders him to kill Claude because he’s been hiding one of these special people they are charged with hunting down.

My favorite zinger in the episode is the reappearance of Hiro’s father.  “The Company” appears to be run by a multinational group of wealthy men, and Hiro’s father is at the center of it.  When Claire is taken as a baby after her mother dies in a fire he orders HRG to adopt the girl but not to get too close because if she manifests abilities she will have to be turned over to the company.  In the scene, we also see a young Hiro looking just as awkward as he does now.  So, while we know so much more about HRG, Hiro’s father is much more of a mystery than originally appeared to be and so is his influence over Hiro’s mission.  Is he really Hiro’s father or was Hiro adopted similarly to Claire?  If he’s Hiro’s father does he have special abilities?  Just how familiar with Hiro’s mission is he?  I’m so glad to see him playing a more important part in this series!

This is the most character focused episode of the series so far trimming the fat of the Mohinder story, the Nikki/Jessica story, and most importantly the endlessly dragging Hiro story.  Don’t get me wrong he’s one of my favorite characters; I’d just rather not see him than to see him doing nothing of importance as far as the overall story or doing no character development.  We’ve gotten some tidbits of development from him but mostly he’s just been treading water for way too long.

Matt and Claire both have abilities better utilized in defensive positions.  It was interesting to see both of them in this episode using those abilities to protect HRG’s family from Ted.  Matt ends up working with HRG through his mind reading ability and Claire’s scene at the end where she has to tranquilize Ted while he’s in full nuclear mode was fantastic.  The look of this episode was also phenomenal.  It may have been because I was watching the episode in HD but I have to say that the black and while was some of the most beautiful I’ve seen on a television series.  It served the purpose of having a historical feel but it also had a real indie comic book feel to it too.  Claire’s make up and the closing scene special effects were also well done for a television series.  Everything about this episode was top notch and really raises the bar for the series.

This was an absolutely awesome episode. A lot of my questions were answered leaving me with new questions, which is fine because I have faith they`ll be answered, unlike some abc shows I know.
I was shocked when Hiro`s dad turned around. And what is up with that rooftop? Everything seems to happen up there. And I guess HRG isn`t as bad as I thought he was.
What I want to know is who is the Haitian working with? My guess is Claude, but I doubt it. And maybe I went to the bathroom or something but how did Parkman end up unconscious in a room, in the Paper Factory at the end?
Damn, this show is good!!

Truly an amazing episode, and yet again this series has, at least in my estimation, beaten Lost again in the ability to answer major questions, give major reveals, resolve some major conflicts, and yet leave many more questions and conflicts rolling while suddenly adding some more to the pot. This isn't Lost bashing, just Heroes praise.

I keep waiting for this show to start going bad, and at its worst it hasn't started me down the road to disappointment yet.

I wondered how Matt was taken myself. Near the end HRG's boss seemed confident that Matt would be joining them, as if he would have no choice in the matter.
Matt's hit rock bottom, he's ripe for the picking. Just like Eden and Issac were when they where turned to work for the Company.

Can we please stop calling him HRG? It was fine when he had no name at all, but we've known his last name for a long time now. Call him Bennett.

Loved this episode! I was just disappointed not to see Wireless. I thought she'd be with Matt and Ted. I can't wait to see her character develop. If you haven't read the online comics you definitely should. They give a lot of back story on her. And who is the new "promising" girl shown at the end that will supposedly fix Benet's mess? Can't wait for next week.

Incredible episode. I loved it when HRG was introduced to his new partner and it was Claude.

And Claude again reminds us that he is the coolest character in the show. I love the bit with Hiro's dad. I too wonder if Hiro's adopted and how much his father knows about his abilities and whether he's been hiding those abilities from the company too.

He did make a point of saying that being a father changes a man.

I also like that the hostage situation was accidental. Matt Parkman may be up against a wall but he's still a caring moral man. And it would've been highly out of character for him to plan to endanger an innocent family in his search for answers. It'll be interesting to see what he and Bennet do now.

The use of black and white was excellent. I love seeing the young Haitian, his lank expression looking even creepier on a teenager set against a black and white suburban house.

And the scene where Bennet shoots Claude it looked like a scene from a 70s spy flick.

Claude may well be the man the haitain is working with. I could see the two running an underground railroad for captured mutants.

Another thought was Linderman. The Haitian pointed out that the man had particular importance to Claire.

We know Claire's real father is Nathan Petrelli and that the Petrelli's father is connected to Linderman.

Could Nathan and Peter really be Linderman's children, hidden in the Petrelli family, making him Claire's grand dad, or could Linderman be their father's brother. Making him Claire's great uncle. Or is he another company man.

We may find out next week 'cause he'll apparently be making an appearance.

Right now my money would be on Claude being the Hitian's co-conspirator. Linderman is clearly powerful and may have been able to act more directly. While Claude's invisibility would've enabled him to make initial contact with the Haitian, before they traded cell phone numbers and stuff.

It would also be a good way to write present Claude back into the story.

In any case this definitely moves Claire, Mr Bennett and Matt Parkman's stories.

Claire's now permanently separated from her family. Parkman's now working for the Company, and Bennet may not even rember having a daughter.

I Bennet doesn't remember his and Claire's relationship will he go back to being the "just following orders" guy will he unt Claire klike any other mutant, unaware of the sacrifices he's made.

What will happen to his relationship with his wife and and son now that they've learned so much and there's no Haitian to take those memories away.

Or maybe Bennet's on the side of good now and set up Matt's recruitment so that he'd have an ally. Bennet had told Matt that he was the only one he could trust.

I loved this episode because it only features a few of the Heroes. Now that they have introduced everybody, they can have a episode which concentrates on a few characters. We don't need episodes anymore where everybody gets his or her screen time. I like that Doctor Who and Mister Sulu are involved in this big conspiracy. I know that's not their character names, but it's fun to combine Star Trek and Doctor Who. Heroes has got the upper hand on 24 and with episodes like this, it will stay that way.

Hands down, this was one of the most amazing TV episodes I've seen. Ever! It left me breathless at the end and hungry for more. Two hours after watching it, my wife and I were both geeking out about it.

And, was that Simone who stood up and started talking to Peter and Isaac in the preview for next week? If it was, is she one of them or did Peter somehow give her the power to heal? That would be very interesting, if Peter could not only absorb powers but hand them off to others as well.

Amazing episode. Incredible show. I can't wait for more.

Incredible episode!!
Ok, I'm thinking the Haitian is working for Natahan. Bennett will now hunt as before and eventually run into Claire. Matt will go to work for the agency. Simone will turn out to have had powers all along, it would be to much of a cop out to say Peter healed her. NOW, here is the big question I arrived at...on the rooftop, didn't Bennett say his wife was unable to conceive? If so, what does that lead us to believe about Claire's brother??
Does anyone not know by now who is playing Linderman? I can't wait for him, and I think this will be another great role in his long career. I have been a fan of his since I was a kid and it looks like this could be a big year for him.
I wish they would move Heroes off of Monday, so I wouldn't be in such a big hurry for the weekend to be over!! It just doesn't seem right that I am so anxious for Monday to arrive, lol!!

Couple more things...maybe while Ted is in a coma, he can go make some Geico commercials!!

And, the nurse apparently has the powers of sexual seduction. She is played by the main girl from Stick It!, the gymnastics movie that came out last year. She is superhot and apparently was dating Ben Roethlisberger for awhile, not that this matters, just a little background.
