HEROES: Eris Quod Sum

Elle Needs Some Insulation

One of the high points of the last season of Heroes was Elle, played by Kristin Bell. Bell’s appearance on the series was completely overhyped and when she did live up to the hype she was paid back by only getting to appear in a few episodes this year. Based on her performance in this episode though; maybe cutting back on her appearances is a good thing. She had great chemistry with Peter and played the over-the-top evil bitch fantastically, but she falls extremely short in this episode as the weakened and sick one time villain desperate for help. To make things worse, she ends up partnering with Hayden Panettiere, who is easily the weakest actor on the show. These two have no chemistry together and Hayden is a bad influence on Bell because it seems like Bell starts delivering her lines in the same deadpan style as Panettiere. Every scene these two is a disappointment other than the fan service shots of Elle using her powers – those scenes actually fairly cool looking if a little reminiscent of the Emperor.

The best scene in the whole episode has to be the exodus of Maya. She was never interesting last year and has been even less so this year. It would have been more interesting to martyr her in some way but at least now she’s gone. Mohinder on the other hand is back working with a major company full of bad guys. Will there ever be something else for him to do? At the same time, will there ever be a season where Hiro doesn’t time travel? In this episode, he refuses to time travel again out of fear of destroying the present even more. Maybe the writers will choose to focus on his ability to teleport – maybe even stick a BAMPH on screen behind him.

There are problems with this episode, problems that have plagued the series from the beginning, including poorly paced storytelling and some weak acting, but this episode does manage to bring some intrigue back into the series. Papa Petrelli has a plan and knowing what Peter has seen in the future doesn’t seem to deter him. He’s building a team of super villains to execute this master plan, and honestly this is the first episode where that plan even seemed to matter. At the same time, it feels like the heroes are reuniting and will be ready to fight. One of the best things about Season One is how the story brought the heroes together without really calling them The Avengers or The Justice League. They came together to fight evil in a real world sort of way. They’ve been there now though; couldn’t one of them just call the others for help? It seems to me that once you’ve been through something like what happened in season one that you’d stay in contact with the people who went through it with you. With that said though, the heroes are once again coming together organically, in stark contrast to the villains which are simply being recruited.

This episode was a big improvement over previously installments this season. Transitions between the multitudes of characters were smooth and for the most part even if the pacing of the storytelling was up and down. Elle was wasted in this episode but since she appears to be headed to the Hall of Doom, maybe she’ll be fun again the next time she appears on the show. I wonder if Kristen Bell wishes she had decided to take the role offered to her on LOST instead of this one. There were more action scenes in this episode than in the finale of Season One.

Yet again, I totally disagree with your review. I do agree with the grade though which perplexes me. Hayden is definitely not the weakest actor in this show. If I had to place that mantle on someone, it would be Maya and maybe, even though I like her, Ali Larter. I never watched Veronica Mars so I wasn`t a huge Bell fan. I do think she does a good job as Elle and was fine in this episode. My only problem, even though it had to be done was, why the hell they would travel on a plane knowing that she keeps short circuiting. Not the smartest move. Maybe she figured since she doesn`t get hurt a plan crash wouldn`t bother her much, but what about the normal people. Kind of irresponsible for someone trying to make the world a better place.

I like the fact that we don`t really know where Sylar's loyalties lie. I personally think that he wants to work with his father until he can find a way to stop him, but the pull of the darkside might be too much for him. He knows that all Petrelli has to do is touch him and take his powers away. Keep your enemies closer and all that. I don`t think Papa Petrelli really trusts him though either. I also like the fact that we know why Peter has the type of power he has or had. I remember everyone talking about how Peter had all these powers and there was a problem with having a hero with all those powers, but now we have a villain with even more power. He has all of Peter's and whomever else he has touched, including Maya. He can obviously control them too. That`s one scary dude.

And can someone please beat Knox. The dude seems unstoppable because everyone is scared of something. I don`t think any of the heroes can mess with him.

As far as Hiro, goes, wanting him not use his time traveling abilities during a season is just stupid. That`s a big part of his powers. That`s like wanting Wolverine to not use his healing factor. Hiro is actually one of the most powerful heroes on the show because he could easily do a terminator and go back in time and kill anyone before they can do any damage. Its his personality that stops him and Ando.

Good season, so far in my opinion. If more people looked at this show like a comic book, instead of a show, they would enjoy it a whole lot more.

The only good thing about this episode was Arthur Petrelli. Looking foward to seeing more of him. Glad to see Parkman is developing more his abilities and now can do stuff his dad did. I agree Hiro needs to stop time traveling, that's one of the things that hurts the show, his time traveling and people being able to see the future. None of the future things come to pass so I don't know what's the point of bringing every single season so far. If they would show a future and let it happen then maybe it'd be worth it. Besides time traveling will bring up to much inconsistencies & questions, like where is Peter's Irish girl from last year?

On this episode Hiro says he won't jump back in time cause he doesn't want to change history, something he learned from Season 2. Why in the world did he jump back in time to get that fake sword to stab Ando in the bar then? Guess the writers only have Hiro remember he doesn't want to jump back in time if it serves their purposes. Hiro jumping back in time to stop the theft of the formula bad, Hiro jumping back to get fake sword good.

Elle can't control her power, she's causing everything electrical to go crazy and what does she decide to do while in her condition? Oh yea, she decides to go ride a plane even though she's terrified of flying and knows that an outburst from her will cause the plane to crash. Does that make any kind of sense!!?

There is a real good Heroes article on Entertainment Weekly that I recommend you guys read. Talks about the series, ways to save it and how it's falling. This season it hit it's worse viewership ever with 8.6 mil a big drop from 16 mil back in season 1. One of the things they talk about on the article which I hadn't even thought about was how back in Season 1, the Heroes were more grounded in reality and relatable. For example, Peter was a nurse, Claire a cheerleader, Parkman a struggling cop, Nikki a single mother stripping for cash, Hiro hated his job, etc etc. Now everyone is running around doing super things. Some of the heroes need to die or be written off. Glad Maya is gone, now they got get rid of a few more and bring new blood in. Kring back in Season 1 talked about how they could tell diff stories with different people since there were Heroes all over the world, once the show hit big he threw away that idea and decided to keep his current cast. 24 saw new life when they got rid of David Palmer and Kim Bauer, both series regulars, so maybe Heroes should look into replacing a few of it's own.

Sylar is obviously a good guy, at least right now, and is probably the only reason Peter is alive. Happy that Maya is out but wish she was killed off as opposed to walking away.

I'm tired of Hiro, I almost wish they'd kill him off.

Agree with hanso's 1st and 2nd paragraphs completely.

I want to know what's happening with Mohinder's victims

The speedy chick still working for the Arthur totally fooled me. Curious to see what she's so scared of. It has been a fairly good season but since season 1 I just can't stop making X-Men comparisons. It's the one thing I hate, how much they appear to have stolen from that.

I definitely don't think Panettiere is the worst actress on the show. In fact, I think she's a pretty good actress. I think Elle is an annoying character. Not as annoying as Maya, though. Glad Maya is gone. She was pretty friggin' hot, though. And at least she gave Mohinder something (someone?) to do. I'm fine with Hiro not time traveling. It's consistent with his character, and it makes continuity easier. Speedster chick in annoying. Anyone else think Parkman might have read her mind and is playing her to get to Papa Petrelli? It's possible, but I doubt it. I don't think he's that wiley. I like that he's getting more comfortable with his powers, though. I wonder if using his power in a manner similar to his father will start tempting him to the dark side. Speaking of dark sides, I agree that Sylar is playing undercover and saved Peter. Papa knows it, too. He's counting on being able to steal Sylar's powers or lure him to the dark side. Papa is getting too powerful, too quickly. I'm guessing there's something we don't know yet about how his powers work, like he only keeps then temporarily or something. He claims it's permanent, but he could be lying. I wonder if Peter lost his original ability to absorb powers or just lost all the powers he absorbed from others and can re-absorb new powers.

grrarg7 10/29/2008 11:58:53 AM

IMHO, Peter lost ALL of his powers. If he still had the ability to absorb other's powers then he would have healed being around Claire. I think Heroes has established that Peter can aborb powers and not even know he has them or how to use them. However, Claire's healing power seems to work automatically and isn't something he needs to concentrate on. Plus he'd now be charged up with Claire's, Elle's, Nathan's, & Tracy's powers already! More power than one idiot can handle. Maybe they should hook Peter up with Hiro & Ando so they can be the Heroes version of the Three Stooges. The scenes with Hiro are usually the ones that bore me to tears. I also completely disagree with the statement that Panettiere is one of the worst actors on the show. In general, I have no complaints about any of the acting. I'd love it if Kristen Bell was a full time cast member too. It's been bugging me how quickly Mohinder seemed to inject himself when I don't think there was enough ground work laid to justify him doing this. Or did I miss something?
Also, can we get a story arc that doesn't involve the fate of the world? Maybe a "big bad" on a local level?
TheStormrider 10/29/2008 12:31:42 PM

Couple of things.

Hanso: Maybe he didnt go back in time for a sword. maybe just sideways. Unless I missed something in the scene.

Wiseguy: dont you find it a little wierd that parkman didnt read her mind though? Especially in the 'guilty look' stages.

Is that a plot twist, continuity error or triple fake.

I think what the show needs is to keep killing off people.

Any takers as to when 'adam' comes back? I do agree totally with hanso though, its lost its link to reality. Its very difficult to relate.

For the first time in this shows history, this season, i find myself wanting to use the skip button 'during' the show and not during 'commercials'.

Now thats wierd.

With regard to Peter... I can't see them permanently making him powerless. It's possible that: a) His loss of all his powers is temporary; b) His loss of absorbed powers is permanent, but his loss of original absorption power is temporary; c) He is or will be able to absorb powers, but he can't take from the same people twice, ergo his non-healing; d) His power isn't gone completely, but is somehow fundamentally altered; or e) I'm wrong and he'll become the new Ando and/or get killed. Guess we'll have to tune in next week to find out.

hanso 10/29/2008 2:51:29 PM

Stormrider - I don't think Hiro went sideways, I think the scene said 3 hours before or something along those lines. I'm with you on some Heroes being killed though. What sucks is the show acts like they are dead and then brings em back. Did anyone actually believe for one second that Parkman was dead!?? They did the same thing with Ando an episode prior only to have him be alive the next episode. How many times do they think they can trick the audience? I'm still waiting for Adam to pop up somewhere.

I'm glad they addressed the fact about how Peter survived the fall. For a minute there I thought they were going to go ahead and make people believe Peter powerless could survive something like that. After the Hiro thing, and the Elle thing not making any sense, I was almost certain they wouldn't even bother with saying how Peter managed to survive. Glad they did.
What's up with the families on this show? First they leave Micah alone with his dead mom's body now Claire's brother was home alone for god knows how long since Mom and Sis were with the puppet dude and Dad is running around with Claire's real mom.
Wiseguy 10/29/2008 5:05:45 PM

Stormrider, I THINK that Parkman isn't trying to read her mind out of respect since she is suppose to be his soulmate. His morals may be keeping him from doing it since it is sort of a violation of a person.

Two blondes together a bad thing. I don't think so. Of course it would be better if they would make out. I read that EW article too and agree with one of its points: there are too many characters. The show needs to trim the cast a bit. The show needs to concentrate on two or three main characters and maybe a few recurring characters and that's it. The stories also need to be shorter and more self contained in one or two episodes.
