HEROES: Four Months Ago

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, November 14, 2007

So we finally got the episode I predicted since the beginning and it was even titled what I expected it to be titled “Four Months Ago”. It says a lot about the series that I’ve been more curious about what happened in the previous four months than what might happen to the world by the season finale. The story arc this season is just weak and the new characters are uninteresting. Tim Kring has been saying all of this himself in recent interviews about the show. I hope that since he’s seeing his mistakes that like the producers of LOST did last season, he’ll get to work fixing them. We didn’t get four months ago stories for every hero, but we did get the back-stories on the most important ones, the ones who seemed to have a back-story to tell with only one exception. We learn more about Peter and Adam, and about Nikki and DL. It seems like not much happened of interest in that time with Matt or with Claire but I would like to have seen more back-story on Mohinder and Noah Bennett’s partnership and their plans to bring down the company. What did Hiro do during those four months? With that said, let’s get into the episode…

Peter’s back-story has been the most intriguing to me this season. He’s been really annoying with this whole memory loss mess and his basic reset as a character. It turns out it’s all the fault of the Haitian. I think he needs to be killed off because he’s been behind way too many character resets in the last two years. At any rate, Peter saves the world and finds himself in a lab run by the company and overseen by Bob with the promise of healing him, of removing his abilities for good. It’s here that we are reintroduced to Ellie who is a “patient” at the facility herself but she’s become a trustee of sorts and is given the responsibility of giving Peter his meds everyday. Remember when she was first introduced this season and I thought that Kristen Bell did an OK job but that anyone else could have done about as good? Well I’m happy to report that Bell finally shows some chops this episode and helps create a character that was hilarious and a little creepy at the same time. I loved how much pleasure she took at flirting with him then zapping him just a little with her electric ability on every visit. I also found the introduction of Adam to be satisfying, I can honestly say that his character intrigues me where the other new characters (other than Ellie too) do not. Adam seems to be a good guy, but I don’t believe it.

The Nikki DL story is the hiccup in this week’s episode. The reason it’s such a problem is that most of it, if not all of it is an unnecessary retread. Bob shows up and pays DL’s hospital bills after the events of last season. While there, he makes Nikki the same offer that he made Peter but she declines, instead opting for an at home medication. The meds make her sad so she stops taking them and a new whorish personality takes her over and runs for L.A. to do cocaine and dance. DL finds her in no time and is shot by a guy who Nikki was dancing with. Well, DL’s still dead and his second death adds absolutely no depth to Nikki’s story than what we already knew. Her bout with the drugs could have featured some interesting social commentary about all the antidepressant drugs doled out by doctors these days but no dice. The only potential in it is if we see Nikki begin to deal with some guilt over DL’s death.

We got some unnecessary and honestly unwanted back-story from Alejandro and Maya as well. Apparently, Maya’s powers and Alejandro’s ability to stop them were manifested at Alejandra’s wedding when Maya saw his new wife making with the lips with another man. That’s really about it. We didn’t need to see this and in the end who cares?

Peter and Adam’s story is at the center of this episode and it doesn’t disappoint. Like last year’s filler episode, this one was cleverly woven into the main storyline. By the end, Adam had helped Peter remember everything and the two of them were headed off to save the world. Now, the other stories this week were just true unneeded filler. Why not give some other really good four month’s earlier stuff instead of these stories that changed nothing. I don’t feel any differently about Maya and Alejandro or Nikki and DL than I did before the episode started. With Peter on the other hand, I now know all of these new connections and I’m informed on the main characters’ motivations, therefore I’m more intrigued. Part of the problem is that the characters are just weaker compared to the main cast. Yes, Nikki has been around from the beginning but I’ve flip flopped over the two seasons on whether I care about her story or not. Peter’s story was great and the others weren’t, nuff said. It looks like the next three episodes should be pretty exciting. But if we are to believe the marketing (and we all know the network does not have a good track record in this department with this series) is it too little too late? Should we really only just now be getting excited about this season?

Mr review guy, you're a moron! Hiro didn't have four months missing, we caught up with him in the season premiere right after last season's finale, not four months later, so therefore of course he wouldn't be in the "four months later" story. I really hate stupid people. With that said...

They need to just kill the wonder twins, I can't believe how annoying they are, but damn Maya is hot...

And I was expecting more on what happened to Sylar, how come he doesn't have his powers? Yeah lets not include the cool bad guy, who wants to see that?

As for Kristen Bell, she can zap me any day, but really, how dumb is Peter, he doesn't realize he's in a prison? And hey lets have Adam right next door to influence him so he can escape.

Too many new characters this year, it's a little overboard, for example; Miccah's cousin seems to be a waste, I hope they are done with her. And Nichele Nichols, what's up with her? I thought she was going to actually do something on this show, maybe they're saving her for later...

But it's still a damn entertaining show, and with Kring listening in, sounds like he hears the concerns of fans, I'm sure the show will only get better.

The only thing I find myself wondering is why doesn't Hiro just jump back into the future moments after he disappears. With his ability, just because he disappears and is gone for four months, it doesn't mean that he has to return four months later. That seems kind of dumb.

lol jon, I was thinking the same thing. I guess they will say he can't control it perfectly, unless it fits the story structure. Also, doesn't Peter have his powers? Why doesn't he just go back to the future and get Caitlin back, he got his memory back didn't he? Well I guess he will coming up...

That's the most fair review you've written on Heroes, Mr. Lackey! Still, the best episode of the year, but Bob being that "evil" is a bit of a stretch. Nikky's thing is a total retread except she bears the guilt for DL's death though (just like with Sylar being unable to avoid Hiro's obvious sword stab in the finale) his adeptness at using his ability should have allowed him to avoid it. Nikky's a terrible character and she and Micah's performance as worrying family members at the hospital wasn't believable at all. I think this is one of the worst directed shows I've ever seen. Even Peter yelling for Caitlin was so over done!

I am excited about Adam, though. All of a sudden who's good and who's bad is reversed, and this show is surprising me quite a bit.

Not a great episode. Sylar should be dead. Maybe Chapter 3 will be better.

I'm shocked, but I think this is the closest I've come to agreeing with Stephen on anything, although I'd really like a monkey to smack him across the face everytime the word "filler" gets typed on his keyboard.

What would a posting from me be without a disapproving nod to Steven, though? :) I hate to ruin your brilliant "prediction," but this episode has been listed in the imdb database for a while now, and The 10th Wonder was talking about it a while ago, maybe 2 or 3 months? You can certainly pat yourself on the back if it makes you feel good, but this episode's existence was no revelation. I think you've been drinking too much of the MetalWater, if you catch my drift. ;)

That said, I definitely think some great moments were offset by some ehhhh ones. Nikki's plotline was definitely not a tooootal retread, as we do learn that her mind is way more messed up than we initially thought, but it certainly didn't need that much time in the bigger scheme of things.

I was really hoping to learn about Sylar's lack of powers (injected with the virus?) and what happened to him at Kirby plaza. It seems like anybody whose time was verbally spoken of (Candice telling Sylar she dragged him from the plaza) was ignored during this episode, which is a shame. I woulda been fine with shorter stories and more of them.

As for Hiro, beyond what Yeoman said, his headline would be "500 Some-Odd Years Ago," not four months. Good point, Jon, although my uneducated guess is that it has to do with the time-space continuum. i.e. - if he overlaps with himself in the outer limits of time he will undo the universe. Maybe?

Maya and Alejandro's bit, while interesting, definitely added little in terms of plot, but as is so often with what you deem "filler," it certainly gave some motivations to their relationship and why Alejandro is so hurt when Sylar convinces her to use the power. She killed his friggin wife, even if she was a no-good cheater!

Matt's story would have been a better bit to throw in there, even if it's just a short chat between Matt and DL while in the hospital, maybe a phone call from his wife. Knowing what happened between them is different than seeing it acted out.

I'd give this episode a solid B+. I love what they do with Adam and Nathan, and what that means for Claire down the road. What's shown here is fine, but what's not there is something that coulda been great. As always, though, I'm happy to see where they take this before I rush to judgment.

I expected more from this episode.
The twins remain uninteresting, we go back to a Nikki split personality thing and why didn't DL just make the bullet go through him, the guy took a couple of seconds after he took out the gun to actually shoot him from front. It would've been better if he had been shot from behind so DL really didn't have a chance to use his power.
No Sylar in this episode? Writers must be smoking crack cause everyone has to be interested in what happen to him. I hope they are leaving that for later since they made no mention of his 4 months in this story.
The only interesting stuff here was the Peter and Adam things going on. Well, the next 3 episodes look promising. Man, I hate the strike, it's messing with the Heroes season, only 3 left. Sucks!

The "What happened to Hiro?" comment is typical of your reviews, Stephen. Do you have a 2 day deadline for these reviews? Sometimes it seems like you're not paying close enough attention.

Personally, I feel like this episode made previous episodes better. I remember people complaining here about how no one in the world reacted to an explosion above Kirby Plaza. Well, they answered that here, the Company covered it up. I like that DL didn't die from Linderman's gunshot, but another random guy and that Niki was responsible for putting him in that situation. She knew she had split personalities at that point and stopped taking her meds and it cost her her husband. I think it adds to her character and gives her better motivation to join the Company.

Hanso:

No Sylar in the 4 months ago because he spent those 4 months unconscious recuperating from Hiro's sword thrust.

If you remember, he woke up at the beginning of Season two with a big ol' oozing bandage on his chest and a company girl playing nursemaid. He'd been out of it since Kirby Plaza.

I enjoyed the episode... and I think a B or a B-minus is about right. However, I get the sense that I am happier with a B or B-minus than many here...

(1) The "Wonder Twins"... the writers definitely have to work to make their story more compelling. The odd thing is that the actors are fine - I think the brother does a good job with what little he is given, and I think the sister has potential (esp if they have her fall more and more under Sylar's "spell"). But their powers definitely need tweaking. The brother seems simply able to negate his sister's powers... YAWN. And the "toxic tears" thing, while visually kinda interesting... has run its course pretty fast. A tweak or two is definitely in order.

(2) Wouldn't it have been more interesting if Nikki's "third personality" had turned out to be more than just "Jessica-lite"? ANOTHER "bad girl"?

(3) If it turns out that "The Company" manage to track down Claire in part because of her stunt with her cheerleading rival, I wonder if she will at least somewhat change her worldview. I realize she is a teenager, but she seems to chafe inordinately under HRG's "rules" for laying low, as if she really doesn't understand the stakes.

(4) I thought the sequence of Nathan flying Peter up above the city, burning as he went, was very very well done - dramatic and visually VERY cool.

(5) I do think the HEROES writers have a tough time with romance. The Hiro/waitress romance was the closest I think they have come to generating some real chemistry. I mention that in the context of Adam... If we are to believe that Hiro's "betrayal" is what set him on the "dark path", it would work more (for me anyway!) if I had really felt he had a deep interest in the Japanese swordsmith's daughter (sorry, can't recall her name). We kept HEARING he did, but... it just didn't resonate with me.

(5) RE Hiro and Peter and time travel ... the problem with very powerful characters is that it is hard to credibly put them in peril (for ex - I agree that it WAS very silly that DL didn't simply go intangible before being shot!). Peter is already so powerful that it is hard to see what could harm him - esp since he also ADDS powers any time he is around another "hero". And unless writers are careful, Hiro's ability to time hop, to get endless "do overs", will soon make it very hard to write for him.
