Heroes: Hysterical Blindness Review

Heroes of Sight and Sound

At the end of last week’s episode and the beginning of this one, Sylar digs himself out of the grave he had been placed in after being shot by an assassin. The scene was posed in a very familiar way. One shot of it in particular was very reminiscent of the cover art and original poster art for The Evil Dead. Along with Sylar, two other characters are the focus of this week’s episode: Claire and Peter. Of course these stories cross with some of the new characters but at the core of the episode are these three characters. This season has been much stronger than most of last season because of this new focus on just a few characters a week. The challenge is at some point the creators have to make all of these individually told stories cross and the characters to then be important to each other. A little of this crossover happens at the end of this episode with Peter and another less interesting character. Speaking of less interesting, there’s no Hiro this week so again points for that. Hiro could still be made interesting, especially if he actually dies but that most likely will not happen. You believe that to be the case to if you saw the previews for next week’s episode.

On the downside, one story in particular this week feels very rushed. A lot is revealed much sooner than is typical of this series. Much of the mystery around Claire is answered this week in a fairly fast paced and somewhat awkward flashback. The “Scooby Doo” style flashback answering all of the questions is extremely out of place in this episode. It feels like the writers couldn’t come up with any other way to share this information. While it’s not well done, the answers are appreciated and the connection to one of the more exciting characters in the series is intriguing. Gretchen was never an interesting character and now with these new answers, she’s even less interesting. Is she just around for fan service? There’s most likely more stories coming for her but she’s not an interesting character and time will surely be wasted on her, kiss or no kiss. Speaking of this highly promoted kiss, my only thought is this: what a low brow way to get attention. Heroes isn’t some super intellectual series but up to now, it hasn’t been as weak as a CW series either. Claire’s story has the most problems this week of the three characters that get focused on but the surprises are fascinating no matter how ham fisted they are executed.

Peter is still finding himself interacting with the new character that is in a lot of ways a “Dazzler” rip-off. With that said, her story is appealing based on her unique perspective. There have been heroes in comic books for a long time that would also be considered disabled in some way so it’s about time one made it to Heroes. It’s obvious that the writers are working toward some sort of relationship between her and Peter. Not much new happened with Peter in this episode but she did learn some new things about herself. This is one show that truly doesn’t need new characters but if it’s going to happen, at least she is interesting. Well,  at least so far.

So, Peter and Sylar get less story development but they get the major cliffhangers of the episode while Claire gets the most actual story. Sylar’s cliffhanger was easily the most thrilling leading to a near iconic image of Samuel. There’s a bit of the sort of freak show at the carnival in this episode and more of Samuel’s plans are revealed through both Sylar and Claire’s segments of the episode. Even considering the problems with this episode, the Samuel bits make the episode exciting. Even though the look is completely modern, there’s still an air of days gone by in these carnival scenes. These traveling carnivals still exist but they feel representative of things that don’t exist in this modern era and if the writers of Heroes would play on that a little more, there could really be some unique style in store for this series.

Stephen,

I'm a little surprrised by your review.

I felt like this episode was back to the good ol days of Heroes Season 1.

I give it a B to an A

I loved the revelation of the invisible girl. Love me a good curve ball. Thought for sure the brunette was super stalker for Claire.

Also I'm a Sylar fan... and LOVED the amnesia , and loved that he "Joind ": the carnival.

This was Hiro's best episode all season, 1 line of dialouge. then colapse

also I like the Dazzler "ripoff" I thinbk you should refrain from calling characters ripoffs...There  are only so many super powers out there, and all of these characters could be considered ripoffs.

I like where this season is headed.

Grade A

Good episode, even if we saw the Sylar-to-carnival thing coming. Can't wait for the Matt Parkman showdown. The deaf girl's synesthesia has a new twist that does make it an interesting power.

enjoyable episode.  I'm very curious as to the ultimate goal for the carnival folk.  there are times they seem pretty evil and there are times where they seem more benevolent.

okonomiyaki4000 10/14/2009 6:09:27 AM

Yeah, it was obvious all along that she was going to be a Dazzler rip off but why would you rip off Dazzler? Isn't she pretty much everyone's least favorite XMan?

This episode was actually probably the best of this season so far. The Claire story was (of course) totally crap but the rest was pretty good. Especially the Sylar stuff. No suprise that he has lost his memories. I hope they run with that for a while. Also, Ernie Hudson is a great addition to the cast. This show has a terrible track record when it comes to bringing in interesting actors but here's hoping they give him a solid role to play.

Oh, but the Claire story... Awful!!! Gretchen would have been a much better red herring if the real killer had actually appeared in an episode prior to this one. I totally agree on the kiss too. Lesbian kiss? Really? In 2009? Yawn!!!!!!! I know Claire can't be killed but couldn't there be like, another eclipse or something and she loses her powers at just the moment she's demonstrating her ability by lighting a stick of dynamite and swallowing it? Also, if Matt was in the room at the time that would also be just fine.

I actually like the new girl's powers better than Dazzler's. At least she seems to be able to put them to use in a fight, and having synesthesia makes it easier for her to use those powers.

I enjoyed yet another episode, I like the twist with the invisible girl, I agree with gauley I thought for sure the roommate was a stalker chick...the lesbian thing was an interesting twist.  I like how the season is building this year.  100 times better than the last few seasons.

oko...

SERIOUSLY?

I don't care what year it is...LESBIAN KISSING (especially HOTTIE lesbians) NEVER , EVER, NEVER EVER NEVER makes me yawn....

mmmmmmmmm ;)

p.s. yeah I'm a sexist pig

doublec 10/14/2009 12:52:45 PM

Gauleyboy FTW!

And I'm sorry but I just don't get all the comparisons to Dazzler. Dazzler creates VISIBLE spectrums of light. Only Emma (and Peter when he absorbs her power) can see sounds as light which apparently she can then manipulate. Don't see the similarity.

And on the subject of Peter, this was one of the problems with last season is you couldn't track of who could do what. I thought he had gotten back the abitlity to hold more than one power, but he loses the ability to be a superfast Ray Park  when he gains Emma's power. Did I miss something?

JBBUC 10/14/2009 1:38:02 PM

I am right in line with the C rating. This ep was just ok for me. My main issues were the Claire storyline and Peter's accidental acquisition of Emma's (?) ability.

First, like everyone else, I thought the reveal was rushed. I didn't have a problem with the flashback style of the reveal. After all, this is a show that mixes and matches different stylistic approaches all the time. This sequence reminded me of a way-too-short-lived show from Fox called 'Justice'. On that show you followed a case from the time the Defense team took on a client to the rendering of the verdict. At the end of the show, you saw a flash-back of what actually happened. It was a great show, and this sequence would have been cool to me if it had come three or four episodes after Invisible Girl's introduction.

As for the 'kiss', can you spell out the words "FAN SERVICE" any more deliberately? Of course, in order to truly be fan service, that scene would have had to service someone. I have a hard time believing that was the case. That was a completely forced and implausible response to that situation. It's really time to stop all of the whining and bitching from Claire and start making her a badass. If you don't think "healing" is a useful power, you've never read a Pain-Killer Jane comic.

Point #2- Peter hugs Claire when he runs into her at Bennett's apartment but he keeps his speed power. He shakes hands with Samuel and gets a spinning tat from Sam, but keeps his speed power. He hugs and kisses his mom at breakfast, but he keeps his speed power. Then he saves Dazzler-lite from a speeding bus and ends up with HER ability. Can we please establish some continuity for Peter and his power exchange talents? He went WEEKS with Mohinder's powers and NEVER inadvertently bumped another mutant? CONSISTENCY! Is that too much to ask?

Unlike most around here, I don't want to see Claire OR Hiro killed off. I want to see Claire and Hiro GROW UP. I want to see them both become more like Peter, Matt, Tracy and Noah. Geez, even Micah became Rebel and REASONABLY cool. After everything that that these people have been through, it's time to start toughening up!

Stephen Lackey: "Hiro could still be made interesting, especially if he actually dies but that most likely will not happen."

I love how you disguise your contempt for Hiro as a sugestion for making the show better, classic.

okonomiyaki4000: "Lesbian kiss? Really? In 2009? Yawn!!!!!!!"

I gotta agree with gauley, I don't care what year it is theres always room for lesbian kissing.

doublec: "I thought he had gotten back the abitlity to hold more than one power, but he loses the ability to be a superfast Ray Park when he gains Emma's power."

Ya I get what your saying, I think it's just temporary until he figures out how to incorporate his new power. At least thats what I'm hoping it is.

Good episode overall but I do find Peters new friend, soon to be love interest kinda boring. I hope they find a useful aplication of her power that enables Peter to help stop the carnival.
