Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) resurface in the bowels of Mexico, checking into a skeezy hotel in order to plan their next move. Claire's safety is Nathan's primary concern, but she's less worried and takes a walk without him. Up in New York, HRG (Jack Coleman) and the Hunter (Zeljko Ivanek) examine the bodies of three team members killed in the line of duty. Their target was an unknown… a fact which HRG uses to berate the Hunter about sending men in blind. The Hunter heads down to his car for a smoke, only to find Sylar (Zachary Quinto) waiting for him in the back seat. The killer has an offer of allegiance for him: they both want the same thing (dead heroes) after all, and besides, the Hunter isn't exactly chalking up a lot of wins these days. The Hunter responds by turning his gun on Sylar, who promptly teleports away.

Later, HRG echoes Sylar's sentiments to the Hunter, suggesting that working with a paranormal or two might obtain better results. He tries to focus the Hunter's attention on Sylar; instead, the Hunter hands him a file on Mrs. Petrelli (Cristine Rose). She and Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) are currently hiding in a New York cathedral, working out their next step. Mrs. P needs sleep in order to receive her premonitions; in the meantime, she voices regrets about the choices she's made as a mother. Peter prays for help, but as he does so, agents enter the church and begin searching for them.

Down in Mexico Claire pawns a necklace for some money, a stake which Nathan hopes to improve by hustling a group college students in a drinking contest. He loses, but Claire steps in and uses her healing ability to drink the last competitor under the table.

Sylar plants a cell phone and a severed head in the Hunter's office, then informs him that the man who killed the Hunter's team is a shapeshifter and has been posing as one of the Hunter's men. They chase him out of the office, but he uses his power to slip away. The Hunter then returns to the scene of the crime, where he gets the drop on Sylar. A tense negotiation ensues and Sylar eventually gets the man to agree to an alliance. They search the apartment and Sylar deduces the fugitive's routine: he goes to the same bar in different shapes to seduce attractive women.
Peter and his mother hide in the confessional while the agents slowly close in. Mrs. P reveals that she once held far more noble ideals than she does now, but that her premonitions of an apocalyptic future drove her down her current Machiavellian road. They're interrupted by HRG, who spots them, but declares the area all clear.

Sylar and the Hunter head for the bar where their quarry is located. He's disguised as the Hunter, chatting up a beautiful young woman, but he soon spots them and quietly loses himself in the crowd. Sylar and the Hunter search the place and then re-convene; the Hunter suggests they leave. When they do, he turns and shoots Sylar in the chest. Turns out, it wasn't Sylar, but their quarry in disguise. The real Sylar absorbs the man's powers while the Hunter watches. The two then pass the body off as Sylar's to HRG.

Back in their hotel room, Nathan confesses his fears surrounding Claire. He says he gave her a "free pass" out of arrest and incarceration as a way of buying her love, and that he's ashamed of the mess he's made. He vows to make it right… after he's slept off his inebriation. He thinks better of the notion the next morning, claiming that the situation is beyond his ability to repair. She refuses to accept that and admonishes him to make a difference before stalking out of the hotel. He follows her and acknowledges that she's right; the two of them head north towards the border.
Mrs. P sleeps in the church and has a dream. When she wakes up, she claims that they need to find Nathan and Claire, then visit her sister.

The Good

Not to advocate binge drinking or anything, but Heroes needs more interesting uses of powers like Claire's victory in the Mexican bar. It shows a sense of fun while exploring the logical extensions of such conceits as instant healing. Both the Petrelli threads work fairly well this episode, particularly the Claire/Nathan thread, which contains some nice character interaction and a sense, perhaps, of hope for the series' future.

The Bad

Sylar… for the love of God, Sylar!!! Are the writers aware of how problematic this character is? Do they know how exasperating it becomes watching him pull this contrived horseshit week after week? Hey, let's give him ANOTHER power! Then he'll REALLY be bad ass! The issue comes down to logic and character development, problems affecting the Hunter as much as Sylar at this stage. The Hunter is supposed to be a genuine threat: smart, capable and anticipating any challenge a paranormal could present. Does it not occur to him, then, that allowing Sylar to gain a shape-changing ability means that Sylar can now kill him and take his place at any time? Of course not. That would involve a smart, capable character able to anticipate any challenge a paranormal could present. Thus does the show spend all its time telling us how scary he is while showing us something entirely different. Ditto Sylar himself, who no longer needs the Hunter now that he can just take the man's place and use the government to scoop up all the paranormals he wants.

The development also further enables the whole "Sylar is an unstoppable god" motif that constitutes one of this show's biggest problems. The more powerful Sylar becomes, the less plausible they make any defeat of his down the road and the greater the necessity of keeping him separated from the other paranormals (otherwise, he can simply stride in and kill them all with a thought, which would end the show right quick). So he's shunted off into his own plot thread while the writers tinker with his psychology and impress upon us how unstoppable he is while they come up with a way to actually stop him that won't make us track the lot of them down and slap the taste out of their mouths. Oh, and keep him alive afterwards so they can jump into the same trap next season. There is no character here: just a walking story contrivance which got completely out of hand at least two seasons ago. Nice to see the Hunter following the exact same pattern.

The Prognosis

You boys have painted yourselves into one hell of a corner. Best of luck working your way out of it.

So what else is new?

I almost hoped I'd fall asleep during this, but I wasn't putting down the tequila like them.  Maybe it would have been a better episode if I had.  I really liked last weeks, but again a new direction??? What's up with this show.

I'm thinking either the Hunter has something up his sleeve for Sylar or he has a power as well.  But I think they writer who came back is doing the best he can do to undo the mess that was made previously.  This episode was bad.  But hopefully, like Hanso said, Season 4 can start out fresh.

I've been sick to death of Sylar since the beginning of Season 2 as well.  Just kill him off and keep him dead already.  It's really repetitve how they hype him up as a God, find a way to defeat him, but keep him alive and separate from the other main characters for a while, so it can all eventually happen again.  Get rid of him and create a new, and better, main villain.

btw, we never saw the Shapeshifter touch Sylar, so he never should've been able to change himself to look like Sylar.  Sure, it was a crowded bar, so he could've brushed up against Sylar in someone else's form, but they didn't acknowledge that, so it's a plothole.

Still like the show all in all though....I guess...I'll never give up on it though;  I'm with this til the end.

Seeing Sylar was the only part I liked. I do agree the change seemed strange. However, I felt as if the Hunter was trying out HRG's suggestions but on his terms. I really get tired watching Nathan. He needs to do something interesting intead of sucking so much. Nathan likes his power, then he hates it, then he likes it again. I would be happier if the Hunter eventually broke off of the government and started going after Heroes on his own terms. I like Peter and Mrs. Pitrelli but I did not like the hype that was at the end of the last episode.

Did Nathan take Claire to get a haircut before they touched down in mexico?  I don't recall her having a xena hair cut in the previous episode.

JarrodSarafin 3/31/2009 9:38:05 PM

I believe that's her real hair, Amish. They've been using a wig for her character for a while but ditched it this week. Don't recall them explaining the switch to her real hair in the episode though..

Never thought about sylar that way...

it is time for them to find a way to get peter his full power set back and make him the one to keep sylar at bay. i think that there is a lot of potential to fix the problems and move in a good direction, but the show is still good. this episode felt a lot better than most, it was nicely paced and just the right amount of character developement for a few characters.

it would be worth while to get the 'good' characters together and have them 'plan' a way to deal with sylar and the hunter. i sure hope they start closing off storylines and bring back characters that we havent seen in a while to either integrate them back in or move them off the show. it was nice seeing micah again, and i think it was great that he was rebel, but it was also a little underwhelming because we knew it was most likely him.

i am really hoping that they can manage to get the show on track and give us another great season like they did with season 1. it would be alright with me if the whole season was one major plotline building all season. just dont give us a low ball ending like season 1.

Aw CRAP!

You know a show is in trouble when a character isn't a character but a dispousable plot device.

The whole bit where Sylar and Claire can be killed in spite of their healing powers came out of the blue several episodes ago ("Just shoot him in the back of the neck!!" HRG exclaimed, as I recall).  Pretty big surprise there.  I felt this was a Deus Ex Machina by the writers so they could someday kill Sylar, and also have a modicum of dramatic tension left for Claire.  Nonetheless, it was sloppy and went against established canon.  So don't fret folks, the writers (regardless of Bryan Fuller being around now) will come up with some "out of the blue" way to off Sylar, capture Sylar, neuter Sylar, or whatever they want to do to Sylar whether or not it makes any sense whatsoever.
