HEROES: The Kindness of Strangers

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Let me start by saying that I was extremely happy this week to see an episode of the show with more focus. Up to this point, the show runners have been trying to cram as much about nearly every character in the series as they can into a single hour episode. It’s sort of like just slinging colors of paint randomly on a wall. The colors individually are all great but mixed together they don’t look so good. Now I’m not saying the starting episodes of the season were bad but they haven’t been as good as most of last season. I’d rather, for example, not see Hiro for one episode and see a more focused story featuring him in another episode.

Not only do we see more focus on a smaller number of stories, but we also begin to see the heroes coming together against the new threat for the season. The heroes of whom I speak are Nathan and Matt, with these two comes Nathan’s mother, Mohinder, and Molly. In this story, the main one of the episode, Matt is still investigating the murder of Hiro’s father. Of course his leads take him back to Molly’s nightmares but we doesn’t expect is that with Nathan’s help, he learns that his own father is one of the original men in the picture that he has a piece of from the crime scene. Mohinder also learns that the man he works for is in the picture. So, Mohinder’s boss apparently has some sort of special ability. At any rate, the big zinger of the episode (I hope you’ve already watched the episode) is that Molly’s nightmare man is Matt’s father and quite possibly, the murderer he’s searching for. As the episode progressed, the zinger became more and more predictable but that fact didn’t make it any less effective. The final moments between Molly and Matt were some of the most suspenseful in the series. I’m glad to see Matt being more important this season and I’m happy the creators came up with a reason for me to care about Molly.

Speaking of characters I don’t care about, I’m still not interested in the Latino brother and sister making the run to New York. This week finds them in the same car with Sylar, which makes me extremely happy because there’s a good chance he’ll kill one or both of them. If it was left up to me, I’d like to see him take out both characters, they’re just boring. We get more time with Micah’s new family in this episode and I have to say I’m a bit interested to see how Monica, Micah’s cousin, will play in the overall story. Apparently she can “learn” to do anything she sees on television. We first see her do a special cut on a tomato and next she learns some wrestling moves that she uses to stop a thief. Oh, and Micah uses his ability to get free pay per view for his other cousin and he even tries to use his power on Monica to make her feel better but it doesn’t work on humans apparently.

It may seem too many of you that not much happened this week, and that’s probably due to the lack of the more energetic storylines of Hiro and Peter. I was actually glad for a break from their stories because in the last episodes that they appeared in it was obvious that the writers were building in filler for them by setting them up with love interests to distract them for a few weeks. Everyone’s making a big deal about Kristen Bell starting her character next week. I didn’t watch Veronica Mars and I’m glad I didn’t after the way the show was prematurely crushed. I’m less concerned with her stunt casting and more about whether this series actually needs “another” new character. So, the episode in the whole scheme of things, was slower than the previous ones but it was more detailed and better paced than the jumpy cut episodes we’ve been treated to so far this season.

Extra Note: Hey, readers. Jarrod here. We're having a conversation about this episode in our Heroes Forum which I'll link below but for our conversation in our comments section, I'll put up the two snapshots of the picture featuring the "Old Guard". As far as I can see, there are only 11 people in that picture, not 12. Though, of course, the 12th man may be the one taking the photo.

I couldn't find a snapshot of the "cockroach" that is shown after Sylar takes care of Derek. That cockroach is definitely a clue to the big villain as he's been shown before in key situations, I believe twice in Season 1 around key events for Sylar. Haven't found a screenshot for all 3 (or more) times the cockroach has been seen so we can't tell if the creators switched bugs or if they maintained the same species.

Here's the "Old Guard" or 11 of them...

I have to say that Sylar is indeed a great character now. I can't believe that I was wishing death upon his character at the end of last season for some true closure. Now?

No...I truly hope he becomes the Cigarette Smoking Man of Heroes. He's just one of those characters which draws you in...That smirk at the end of last night's show? When he's starting the engine after hearing the twins story? That smirk had me laughing for a stretch there. He's such a great character, I'd rather keep him around...Keep a shady character who always looks after himself ala CSM.

I can't tell if the big baddie "cockroach" is working with Sylar or if he's just following him around. Last time we saw him, he was crawling on the manhole cover on the season finale.

Speaking of which, the story regarding the twins just got a bit more interesting now that Gabriel is involved. Thank god. It will get a hell of lot more interesting when they get picked up driving Claire's stolen vehicle.

That's what I was expecting in this episode. I kept waiting for Gabriel to open the glove compartment and see....Claire's name on the registration for the vehicle. The thief didn't strike me as a guy who would think about cleaning out the car before driving to Mexico...All Gabriel has to do is open the glove compartment or get caught and find out who the Nissan Rogue belongs to..

Then, it shall be on...

"Sauron" (dubbed that because of the 'Eye' pictures and his "I seee youu" to Molly) finally has a name...or rather a face. Has Matt said his name yet?

What I really liked about the show is that the writers are not going everywhere all at once, like Stephen alluded to. I would rather focus on just a few characters for one episode...and then...say.....Focus on Peter next week. (As the preview looked like..).

Some of the best episodes during season one were the ones where only a few characters appeared. Not all of them. I think Kring and Co. stretch themselves too far by having everyone (or nearly) crammed into a one hour show.

I'm glad they didn't show Hiro or Peter in this show even if they're such loved characters. It's better to focus on them next week.

Great show!

There are just too many coincidences and too many characters in this show, i.e., the Wonder Twins just happening to run into Sylar.

The show is moving too slow this season...and we haven't learned anything about the original characters other than already established canon--this after being four episodes deep into the new season??? The original characters are all playing second fiddle to the glut of new characters and their stories...which BTW, haven't gone anywhere yet either.

In regard to the efforts of the producers and the show's writers, so far...I can only give then praise for the Hollywood Sign sequence which was film worthy...other than that, this season, Heroes feels like it is stuck on the same boring island as Lost!!!

I get the feeling that after they ripped-off The Watchmen storyline last season, they have simply run out of good material to pilfer!!!

#2 how exactly did Heroes rip off watchmen? The only thing i can possibly think of was Linderman & co wanting to cause devastation to bring about a new world order. If that's what your thinking watchmen didn't exactly break new ground w/ that one.

On another note: we already know what Mohinder's boss can do. He turns things to gold. remember that spoon in the 1st ep?

After last season where it seemed like a new revelation or a new twist in the plot came every week or two, this season just seems to be spinning its wheels.

One thing I did find interesting about this episode, is I'm starting to wonder if Micah's fixit power can work on people as well. It looked like he might have given his cousin a boost in her ability to absorb and mimic things she has seen (kind of like Marvel's Taskmaster).

Another thing I have to say about this episode, the dialog writing was atrocious. I actually cringed three times because of the clumsy dialog....it was still light years beyond the dialog for SW Episodes 1-3, but still fairly cringeworthy.

How was the dialogue in this episode, "cringeworthy"? It hasn`t changed since season 1. Its mostly all the same writers.
And while I agree that in the first season , they did use some of the same elements of Watchmen, it was far from a "rip-off" of the book. It is a totally different story all together. I think this season is moving along properly. Of course last season seemed to move faster. Every week we were learning about new characters and their situations. Its like someone`s life. Childhood moves relatively quickly, then you progress into an adult and things slow down because everything isn`t brand new to you.
I didn`t even clock that the car they were driving was Claire`s stolen Nissan. That`s pretty crazy. The car though could actually be registered in the father`s or mother`s name and since they are using false identities, unless there was a picture in the glove box, Sylar could never know it was Claire`s car.
As far as coincidences, its called suspension of disbelief people. If you can`t do that, you are watching the wrong show. Not to mention, these situations can happen. I`ve had plenty of strange coincidences happen in my life. Claire lives in Cali. They were keeping Sylar in some remote area of Mexico. The twins were heading to the border. That guy stole Claire`s car and for whatever reason ended up in Mexico, obviously running from something. I`ve definitely seen crazier situations in reali life.
Sylar is an interesting character, because at first I thought that maybe all those powers mad him crazy and a sociopath but he killed that guy with no problem, and with no powers. So, he`s pretty much always been a psychopath, but now with powers. Its just a kind interesting take on nature vs nuture. My question is if we can trace most of the main heroes back to one of those 12 people in the group, I wonder which one is Sylar`s relative?
Can`t wait for next week.

If you guys testified in court in a plagiarism suit on the behalf of Heroes, you would have already helped me win a conviction against the creator of Heroes and NBC...just solely based upon your statements alone.

A tweak here, a tweak there...but Heroes Season One is still a rip-off of Watchmen. "Remember, if the glove fits, you must convict!!!"--Alternate Earth Johnnie Cochran

Metalwater I don't know what your deal is man. Heroes has been great this year. True you don't have a whole lot going on yet like you did last year, but now most of the characters are established. The second act of a story typically develops a little slower, but the show is still the best of all T.V. It is still high quality and is the one show that I cannont miss or let sit on my DVR for a week like I have Bionic woman which has one more episode before I delete it from my schedule. Heroes is awesome and the story is developing it is slowing picking up speed. I don't understand what your problem is. Maybe they need to bring Nathan Fillon on the show to make you happy.

metalwater • Oct 17, 2007, 07:30am •
Even Nathan Fillion couldn't save the slow as ketsup pacing of Heroes this season. BTW, he's on Desperate House Wives and I'm not watching that show...so I'm not and avid fan of everything an exceptional actor does. Besides, he's gotta pay his bills too, just like anyone else.

Now, you asked me what my problem with Heroes is this season. Answer: My problem with Heroes, is exactly what you pointed out in your own statement:

"True you don't have a whole lot going on yet like you did last year."- Kwsupes

You said it all Kwsupes in your own quote, and I fully agree with you on that issue. There has been no character development of the original Heroes cast of characters this season, it is just a fact.

Hiro and his friend have not evolved...and the characters aren't even interacting together. Peter and his brother have been separated too...and, thus are not interacting either...and the ex-stripper mother (Niki) and her son have been separated, with the same results. We have learned nothing about them...and even though the cop and the Indian doctor are working together...both of their characters are not evolving. We haven't learned anything new about them...and hence, even their shared storyline is slowly dragging along. Now, if they turned them into a gay couple, that would be interesting. But do the producers of the show have the guts to do that??? I think not.

Demosthenes • Oct 17, 2007, 07:39am •
Just a couple of things:
1. The cockroach is not a bad guy, he's merely used a symbol of Sylar's ability to stay alive and adapt. Mohinder mentioned these things about the cockroach way back in Ep 1 of the first season.

2. Speaking of seaoson 1, it took a lot of stuff from The Watchmen.
- Gabriel, like Dr. Manhattan was a watchmaker whose parent wanted him to be something more.
- The overall idea that in order to save humanity, part of New York must be destroyed (though it made more sense in The Watchmen).
- Even, and it pains me to say this, Hiro's " Ya ta!" was taken directly from the comic. Once Veidt sees that he was able to accomplish all he set out to, he holds his arms up (identical to the way Hiro does) and screams "I DID IT!".

Now all that having been said, if you're going to steal from the comics, might as well steal from the best, and it's not like I'm going to like Heroes any less because of it.

And thanks gimpy for pointing out ol' Midas Man's powers. I'm glad someone else paid attention to the first episode.

This episode was just kind of blah for me, definetely not an A.

Does anybody else dislike the character, West? He has become like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I agree with metalworker on the Watchman thing. Maybe not to the same extent, but the underlaying plot is similar.

Someone else on this board pointed out in another article that they now seem to be doing the Legacy Virus type storyline. Will Ages of Apocalypse going to be season 3?
