Why do I bother reviewing this series each week? I’m starting to run out of ways to say “this episode was awesome!” The endgame is afoot and those that have played out their parts are being whittled away. There were three major deaths in this episode and one hero mortally wounded. No one’s playing games; this is for all the marbles. So, let’s dig into this episode….
Ando, always the loyal sidekick convinces Hiro that he must get the sword fixed and try again to save the world and to save Ando. Once the duo arrives at the shop where they plan to get the sword fixed Hiro’s father is there waiting for him. Early on, I believed Hiro’s father to be working with Linderman and even foresaw a showdown between Hiro and his father but that’s not the case. Hiro’s father knows of Hiro’s destiny and has been monitoring him the whole time, now he’s here to teach Hiro his final lesson, the lesson he needs to learn to save the world. So, they get in a quick sword fighting lesson. It’s a bit of a stretch that Hiro learns all he needs to know in just a few minutes, even just a few hours, definitely all in one day but this lesson isn’t really about how to use the sword, his father even tells him early on that the sword isn’t important. This lesson is about Hiro owning his power and making himself truly willing to do what is necessary to save the world. Hiro realizes that he must be willing to “cut out his own heart” to save the world. Now I know that Hiro is in no jeopardy of dying, but wouldn’t it be cool if Sylar already had Candice’s power and made himself look like Hiro so that Hiro would have to kill himself? Anyway, these scenes were really great and the story, one I’ve heard before told a bit differently (there’s a series of martial arts movies starring “The Sword Saint”). Heroes has reinvented George Takai giving him yet another iconic character for his resume, and like Walter Koenig’s character on Babylon 5 a better and more interesting character than the one he portrayed on the original Star Trek series.
The episode actually picks up right at the end of the last one with the meeting of Ted and Peter and Peter starting to glow with Ted’s power. Just before Claire blows Peter’s head off, he seems to get Ted’s power under control. They decide that leaving town is the smartest plan so Bennett arranges for them to go to a small town with Claire to hide out and keep their abilities in check leaving Bennett and Matt to go into the “Company” building and destroy the tracking device. Bennett’s knowledge of the building and Matt’s mind reading ability get them inside where they meet up with Jessica and DL who are there to find Micah. The two teams split up off the elevator to reach their individual goals. Matt and Bennett split up to deal with the tracking device only to have Eric Roberts show up with a gun to the back of Matt’s head but Bennett pops up behind him and puts two bullets in him. This death was no shock to me I never believed Eric Roberts would remain a permanent member of the cast. Bennett took him out because he had to in order to save Matt but I also believe there was a bit of revenge stamped on that second bullet.
I don’t know why I never considered Molly as the “tracking device” until this episode. Her location in the building and her ability make it as plain as day, I just never gave it a thought for some reason. That’s why the company was never able to find Claire, because Molly had gotten sick. This story arc ends with a gun held to Molly’s head by Bennett and a gun to Bennett’s head held by Mohinder. This story will inevitably end with Mohinder and Bennett leaving the facility with Molly I’m sure.
Sylar, diligent as ever, is on to Claire, Ted, and Peter, and he wants Ted’s power. So he sets them up to get arrested and his plan couldn’t have gone better when Claire and Peter escape but Ted is arrested. Sylar later steps in front of the police vehicle and flips it upside down, kills Ted and takes his ability. This was inevitable as the paintings and Peter’s visions have told us that either Peter or Sylar will blow up, Ted was never a contender, and we know what Sylar has to do get other people’s powers. So, now the pieces are all in place and the final moments with Sylar looking out over the city and uttering the one word, “boom”, was riveting. After the death of his mother, Sylar has lost all compassion for humanity. Before he just wanted to kill those like himself to take their abilities and to become truly unique, now he doesn’t have a problem with killing everybody. He’s a phenomenal villain and I’d love to see him find a way to get away to fight another day like so many of the great ones do in comics.
I have to mention Nathan who has turned out to be a willing pawn in all of this because he has come to believe that it can’t be stopped. He’s fallen for the idea that Linderman is infallible and he, like Sylar, has given in to his destiny. This is best defined by the confrontation between him and Hiro, another of the best scenes in the episode. He asks for Nathan’s help and when Nathan denies Hiro of any assistance Hiro yells at him “You are villain!”. The scene was simultaneously hilarious and riveting. Nathan is however partially correct, the election is over now and nothing can be done about it. Candice took Micah to a voting booth where he used his abilities to give Nathan the election by a landslide. So, the only thing left to stop is the explosion, Nathan is now a Congressman but will the destiny that Linderman put into place for him still follow though with no Linderman around to make sure that happens?
Speaking of Linderman, he is confronted by Jessica and DL and he approached Jessica as she still had full control of her dual personality situation but he didn’t realize they had well, come to an agreement. So, when he offers Jessica money to kill DL she switches herself over to Nikki who can resist the temptation. Linderman whips out a gun and blasts on DL himself but he messes up and DL has just enough juice left in him to rip out Linderman’s brains. At the end, of the episode I wasn’t sure if DL actually died or not. I expect if he didn’t he probably will next week.
Heroes is one of the toughest series on TV to review right now because there are so many characters and so many plotlines. The best episodes manage to not only balance all of the stories but also connect them and make them all important to the overall story arc and this is one of those episodes. Landslide is just such am episode. Every character and every story in this episode plays into the eventual success of failure of the explosion whether the characters know it or not. For comic book fans, this series and its best episodes also manage to create super groups like The Avengers or the Justice League without truly going through the comic book motions of doing so. In stead the villains and the story brought everyone together in a palpable and clever way to impress us comic book geeks and hold the attention of a mainstream audience at the same time. Oh did we get a little hint of the future for these heroes from Claire? She mentions at one point that she thinks she’ll go on patrol and jump in front of bullets after all of this is over. Another character replies that he won’t be wearing his underwear on the outside of his clothes. Great comic book references, but will the creators find a way for these heroes to do just those things in this series? I can’t wait to find out. Landslide was phenomenally executed television that did everything I could have hoped for. Next week should be one of the most exciting season finales of the year.
