HEROES: Lizards

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, October 03, 2007

I know Heroes has to be one of the toughest series on television to produce. I can’t think of a show running now that has as many important characters. Balancing all of these stories and keeping everything even a little bit coherent has to be a monumental task. With that said, this is season two of the series so the creators should be getting better at their jobs. After looking at last week’s episode a second time, I think I let my fan boy love of the show get in front of the critic in me and I went a bit soft on the show as far as the grade goes. I see the same kind of thing in the comments section all the time. It’s easy for us as fans to apologize for any issues with shows that we dearly love. I didn’t do it with the first six episodes of last season of LOST so I’m done doing it with Heroes too. My job here is to look at each show I review critically not fanatically. Now, with that said, the fact that I am a fan means I get it, so I won’t take points away from a show like Heroes because of comic book drama like I’ve seen on other sites. This is a comic book television series after all.

So, this week we return to Hiro, Claire, and Mohinder for the bulk of the hour but on top of that we get a bit of Matt and Peter. I have to say after the season premiere of Heroes, I did not care for Hiro’s story. I still really like the character but seeing him become his own historical hero didn’t appeal to me. This week ,overall, I’m still not completely engaged by the story but, there were some great moments in the story this week. As most people predicted Hiro would have to dawn the armor and fix the mess that he blames himself for creating. The battle that follows him suiting up is hilarious. Hiro seems to finally be in full control of his power and he’s literally showing off. In the end he returns the armor to the Englishman and tries to give him credit for the fight but I don’t think this will hold. At some point, Hiro will stop pretending to be the “hero” and literally become him. So, last season he spent so many episodes actually trying to steal his own sword. Now, the Englishman did reveal an ability this week, the same ability as Claire. He also has blonde hair. Could they be setting him up as an ancestor to Claire?

Mohinder was sent this week to treat someone with abilities who had apparently contracted the virus that seems to be spreading through the “heroes” or for lack of a better word, “mutants”. As you may have expected the victim is the mysterious Haitian. The Haitian was ready to die but Mohinder convinces him that it’s not his time. For a minute, when Mohinder seemed to be missing his memory, I bought it. What really happened is he was able to reunite Bennett with the Haitian and they seen to be ready to get to the work of taking down the company. I liked seeing Mohinder actually having an effect on this season’s mythology without using some power where he shoots lightening from his hands or something like that. Speaking of shooting lightening from hands…

Peter finds himself with amnesia and the captives of Irish thugs. They believe he stole something before they were able to steal it. So they give him a good beating before he finally remembers he has abilities. When enemies of the thugs show up Peter hands out some beat downs in full on super hero style using a myriad of powers. This was easily the most exciting scene in the episode. With Hiro and Peter truly utilizing their abilities in this episode, I have to hope we’ll see truer super hero events like these throughout the season. The heroes have matured and they understand their powers and they’re using them. In the end, Peter has to agree to help the thugs pull a job in exchange for a mysterious box that contains clues to who Peter is. This feels like filler, a way to slow Peter’s return to New York down for a few episodes.

Are we supposed to like the guy that is hanging around Claire? I don’t think so, but if we are I’m really missing the boat because he seems like an ass to me. He’s a super human and he believes that Claire is true and he’s out to force her to expose herself, at least to him. He’ll even stoop to peeping on her through her window. This kid just really ticks me off. I’d like to see Claire reveal her ability full on to him by finding a way to beat him down. Overall, this kid has no charisma, he’s just plain annoying.

Matt and Ando cross paths this week as Matt investigates Mr. Sulu’s death. The big thing that happens in Matt’s story arc comes during an interrogation of Momma Petrelli. While reading her mind, she communicates with him telepathically demanding he get out of her mind. Is she a telepath? I’ve been waiting to see what she can do and it looks like we’re finally going to start finding out. I’d still rather have seen her die than Kaito Nakamura. Matt’s story arc this week felt almost like a standard procedural with the cop having a special talent, a little like Medium.

The stories this week felt better paced than the season opening and easier to get invested in. At the same time, I still could care less about Maya and Alejandro. Their story just feels unnecessary and after two episodes I still don’t care about these characters. Let me say one other thing that I’m hearing from several friends that I’m actually inclined to agree with. I love that the show is taking on such an epic global feel with characters from various parts of the world. At the same time the show comes on Monday nights when viewers are home from the first hard day of work in the week and the last thing they want to do is spend half the episode reading subtitles every week. My favorite horror films come from Italy and Japan, so I don’t have a problem with subtitles when I pop those films in, but hearing people complain about such heavy subtitles in a night time drama week after week seems legitimate to me. It seems nit picky but I can only hear it from so many people before it deserves consideration. Like last season the show for the first few episodes, still seems to be finding its footing and setting the stage for the rest of the season. This time around it feels like things will settle out much quicker than last season though. Last year, it took four to five episodes for the show to find its rhythm. This year, I believe we’ll be on a solid pace by next episode based on how much better this episode was than the first. So, this year it only took three episodes! Hooray for progress!

I thought that this weeks episode was top notch as usual...and Peter's fight with those Irish thugs had me and my friends cheering for more...as for the Hiro arc...my friends and I pretty much had it pegged last season that he would end up being his own childhood hero...as for the guy who plays Kensei...David Anders...I never watched Alias so I don't know much about him or his character Sark...all I know is that he kind of reminds me of Alan Tudyk...Wash from Firefly/Serenity...which I did watch and can't help thinking that he would have been better in the role...anyway...we can't wait for next weeks episode! Finally in reference to the Parkman/Mama Petrelli scene...at the moment I do not think that she is a telepath...I could end up being wrong on this...but given her background and the people she has history with, I think that she simply suspected that Matt was reading her mind and in her head screamed at him to "get out" to test her theory...especially after seeing the startled look on her face when he sort of jumped in his seat...anyway that's my take on it.

" still could care less"
Wow. I had a fifth grade teacher that would knock a whole letter grade off a paper for that mistake. Just because it's for a website doesn't mean you shouldn't proofread your articles.

I thought that this was a great episode. I kind of thought Parkman would have recognized Nathan as the dude who flew off at the end of last season with his brother and maybe he did, but he didn`t even mention it. Then again, he was shot and on the floor. I too don`t think Mama Petrelli can read minds or has telepathy, but because she`s probably been around it she knows when her mind is being read and just yelled at him in her head. Its like in the X-men with Cyclops and the rest being taught how to fight off psychic attacks.
The whole Claire arc is pretty cool , because Tim Kring said that this season would be partly about the "heroes" adjusting into real life. Her cutting off her toe was just nasty.

What I want to know is how the hell did Peter end up in Ireland?
I also had a feeling that Hiro would have to become Kensei, but I think that dude now realizing he has this power and can`t actually die will become the hero that Hiro is hoping for.
Can`t wait until next week.
B+

I'm sorry but my favorite scene was the fuedal Japan version of a drive-by. That was hysterical.

"I'll just sit here and watch you guys fumble with your bows and aim at me. Oh and Hiro please, please, please don't use your powers to freeze time."

The season opener of Heroes was slow and boring, much like the regular format of the series Lost. There were alot of unnecessary new story set-ups...causing me to think to myself, "Has this thing grown so big that they have lost control of the story and direction???"

Well, thankfully...the show seems to be back on course this week...although I could use a lot less characters. Although I appreciate the producers' attempts to constantly broaden the series for sale in international markets...perhaps they should save that impulse and execute it for a spin off series.

Finally, I thought George Takei went out like a bitch. Isn't he supposed to have powers too??? And seeing how he actually is a real life Samurai...from a family of Samurais...one would think they would have allowed him to battle it out with the new foe using sabres and super powers atop the building...rather than using a simple push to knock his character off. What a waste...and what lazy writing!!! They need to bring him back from the dead and give his character a proper send off. Show Mr. Takei some proper respect!!!

Enjoyed the episode, overall. And I have NEVER understood the way some people just HATE subtitles, so ...

Couple of thoughts....

(1) I guess, although no one mentions it in the show, tht Claire pretty clearly also either doesn't feel pain or has an amazing pain threshold? I mean, she doesn't "just" heal, she seems to find things like getting her hand chewed up in a garbage disposal, or dipped in boiling water, or having a toe cut off, or being burned/melted with heat and radiation, or... well, pretty much any physical damage... to be no more than a minor annoyance?

She ought to study marital arts. Combined with her "talent", would make her pretty formidable.

(2) Couldn't agree more - her male classmate is really, really, REALLY annoying. I have a sinking feeling we are supposed to find him brash and interesting or to be some kind of admirable "rebel" but to me he just comes off as some really intrusive, kinda snotty jerk. And as was noted - really quick to assume he has people all figured out.

(3) How dense are Peter's kidnappers supposed to be? They find him tied up in the cargo container, shirtless, clueless, etc... and assume he... what? Stole an entire container full of Ipods? I guess you could think that maybe...MAYBE... he was with a group that DID steal the cargo, and got betrayed, but... ???

And BTW... one "problem" with really powerful characters is that it is hard to credibly threaten them. Peter wants that box the guy is holding? We have seen him phase, shoot "electricity"/power bolts, and exhibit super strength. Really think he couldn't have that box in about two seconds, once the guy pulls it out of the fire?

(4) Last season, theorized that Mr Muggles is actually a superintelligent evil mastermind. More hints this episode, with his TV watching. Granted, no thumbs is a real limitation (he couldnt work the remote)... but that just adds to his malevolent bitterness... ; )

Shadow

PS- Agree...Hiro's Dad's death was a real letdown. Strangely "flat".

Speaking of proofreading: "dawn the armor"?

That should be "don the armor."

About Peter's powers; I don't think he remembers how to use them. When he phased through the ropes he seemed to do it by accident because it looked like he was trying to pull them apart. Look how suprised he was when he realized he was healed. As for Hiro's dad not bothering to fight...I have two theories.

1) Either they don't have any powers, Hiro's dad or Mama Petrelli. We've never even been slightly hinted at that any of them had powers except for Linderman. I mean to assume they all had powers then we'd have to assume that Bennett might too because he worked for them but apparently he doesn't. The only one so far we know that had powers is Linderman and now the guy who pushed Hiro's dad over the ledge.

And I know a lot of people called it cliche that Peter has amnesia but I think it's a convenient way to deal with a character that is very powerful. Also, like someone said earlier somewhere else, "Maybe he evolved from a single organism or bit of flesh after he exploded." I know someone else disputed that by saying that Ted(?) didn't explode whenever he got all radiated but Ted never did anything to the extent that it could destroy a whole city.

And my theory of Claire and pain is that she feels pain. Because she does groan and moan and wince when she gets hurt but once she starts healing she probably doesn't feel it because she's healing...there's nothing hurting anymore, I imagine her nerve endings are the first to the healing process.

I don't know. Those are my theories.
2) Hiro's dad said he knew who it was and maybe he realized he didn't have no chance even if he bothered to fight because the guy is very powerful.

As was pointed out this episode we really don’t know the full extent of Claire’s and now Kensei’s healing/regenerative abilities. They could in theory be immortal. Their body’s natural regenerative abilities keeping them alive for centuries.

I say this because the killer is using Kensei’s symbol and that symbol seems to be used by many of the ‘nine’ heroes. What if the killer is Kensei? He was one of the founding nine and they did something to seriously tick him off.

Just a theory.

My thoughts (for what it's worth) are thus:

* Great show... This ep was better than last weeks.

* Really enjoy the Hiro arc. I appreciate the fact that he is staying true to character by being humble in regards to his power whilst enabling someone else (the Englishman) to be the hero that he (Hiro) feels is destined to be. Oh, and I too believe Alan Tudyk would have been great as the Englishman.

* Good to see the Haitian returning into the picture.

* Regarding Claire - So this is what happens when you mix a bored teenager with healing powers... you cut off yer dmn toe!

* Not too fond of either the creepy flying boy (Claire's supposed to have a love interest - hope this aint the guy) or the evil "Wonder Twins". Where's Gleek?

Looking forward to next week... B+
