"Heroes: Parasite"

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, March 07, 2007

For all you folks that made such a big deal about LOST taking such a long break I hope you enjoyed this episode of Heroes, because it’s gone again, for another six weeks!  OK, Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, this episode of Heroes had a lot to live up to after the previous incredible episode.  While this one wasn’t as fantastic in visuals or in writing as last week, it was still one of the better episodes of any series we are likely to see this week.

The most interesting part of this episode is the surprise that the Haitian was willing, and able, to trust HRG’s loony wife.  I wondered how the Haitian would deal with a memory erased HRG hot on the trail of his missing daughter.  Now we have an HRG ready to bring the company he works for down just to keep his daughter safe.  That brings me to the most boring new character on the series, the illusionist (that’s what the actress called her character in an interview I saw).  Her abilities are interesting and they offer the potential for some interesting new conflicts but the actress playing the part has zero charisma.  It’s as if she was hired just to be eye candy, and I thought Ali Larter sucked.  Larter has improved a good bit with each episode she appears in so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for this new addition.  I’m assuming that everyone reading this has already watched the episode.  If you haven’t, continue at your own risk as we are headed into spoiler territory.  HRG’s and his wife’s behind the scenes plotting don’t last long as the illusionist poses as his wife to get the truth out of him.  He’s busted by his bosses at the end of the episode leaving his fate in jeopardy.

On the subject of Larter, apparently Nikki gets back in control just in time to keep from killing Nathan who is wearing a wire for the FBI as he heads to the meeting with Linderman.  Heavily hyped for this episode is the fact that Linderman is finally revealed.  Not only is he revealed but he shares with Nathan that he knows all about Nathan’s ability to fly, about Peter’s talents, and about Nathan’s daughter.  This sets up the potential for a deep conspiracy, especially when Claire escapes from the Haitian and heads right for Peter’s house where his mother seems to be a little too comfortable with who Claire is.  Suddenly, it seems that all the parents of these super heroes seem to know way more than we had originally been lead to believe.  At any rate, Nathan actually planned to kill Linderman but after Linderman reminds him that a few seconds after Nathan fires the gun Linderman’s men will be in the room and killing Nathan, he drops the gun and prepares to hear an offer from Linderman that involves a future in the White House.

Finally, Mohinder shows his hand by drugging his new partner Sylar.  By all rights, Sylar should be too powerful for Mohinder to handle alone and he is.  We get some pretty powerful imagery when Peter enters Mohinder’s place and sees him hanging bloody from the ceiling.  This is a confrontation I’ve really been looking forward too.  Sylar and Peter are two sides of the same coin.  They both control a multitude of different abilities and are probably fairly evenly matched.  Sylar has the advantage of more experience using his abilities but maybe Peter’s Jedi training will help close that gap.  At any rate we are left with an extremely exhilarating cliffhanger, and given the six week zinger!

The end of the episode also finds Hiro and Ando back together and they finally get the sword!  When Hiro uses his powers to get them out of Linderman’s gallery he overshoots it a bit and they end up on the all too familiar rooftop in the future post nuclear blast.  Isaac finds himself deeper into the company when they show up to clean away Simone’s body, and all of a sudden Nikki is taking back control of her body, only at the most opportune times for the plot to move forward though.  The Nikki/Jessica story arc needs to be more than a plot device.

The thing that this series has done so expertly so far is to continue adding layers to the story without getting convoluted.  It would be easy for the story to turn into a big mess with so many characters and so many different plot threads.  With each question answered, we are given new plot twists that seem to fit perfectly within the universe the series is built on.  There have been hiccups along the way; it took a long time for Nikki’s story to get interesting and now it’s back to plot device land and Hiro has spent way too many episodes spinning his wheels, but overall my complaints are pretty minor for such a complex series.

The ads keeping promoting the fact that we are on our way to the final chapter.  Do you think this means the final cliffhanger ending of the season or do you think they plan to wrap this story up at the end of the season?  Once the nuclear explosion storyline is done, there’s potential for many more stories of these super heroes saving the world from other villains.

This was again, another fantastic episode. We leave Peter and Mohinder is a precarious situation with Sylar about to take Peter`s brain. If that wasn't enough we finally get Linderman, who I am personally not too impressed with as yet, but I`m sure given time, he`ll be the evil bastard that I expect. I`m not going to make a judgement on the illusionist as yet, but to say so far, she`s a bitch. She reminds me a little too much of an X-men villian like one of the Brotherhood. Maybe she`ll get become a little more multi-dimensional. As if all this wasn`t enough, we find out that the person protecting Claire is none other than Peter`s mom. I didn`t see that coming. It seems that this has to do with a bunch of rich influential people. Linderman, Hiro`s dad, Peter`s mom. I wonder what`s going to happen to Parkman and if that illusionist chick killed HRG`s wife? And you could tell that D.L. finally caught on and new something wasn`t right with Nikki. He`ll probably go after her and end up in Vegas. He hasn`t really interacted with any of the Heroes since Hiro and Ando way back when. 6 weeks? Damn! That sucks!

Tim Kring has said the show may become like 24 in that there may be rotating characters. I would be happy if they eliminated Nikki/Jessica. Most episodes, I just fast forward through any scene with her & her family. The Parkman character is interesting, but poorly acted so he can get the boot also. Of course Hiro is safe. He's the best character in the show. And if they're smart, they'll keep Claire & Peter. My biggest concern is Bennet. He has become such a facinating character. I would love to see him teaming up with other heroes next season working to take down The Company. Along the way we will learn that The Company actually does some good which will lead to conflict. Something this show handles pretty well. I guess time will tell...

I love heroes , its an amazing show, but every one is always protecting Hiro on these boards.
I find him to be boring.sure he is somewhat of an underdog. but im like get rid of him ..just like they should get rid of the nikki/jessica character.
Peter looks an awful lot like Peter Parker.. any see it too?well according to Tim Kring this chapter will conclude and all the stories will be tied up by the end of the season.Lets just hope that they can produ e the same quality entertainment in season 2 as they did in one.

I'm really biting my nails on this show. For many reasons. 1) I'm rooting for all the characters, except Sylar of course 2) I don't want Heroes to end up like LOST. The show has so much potential but I don't want outside pressure to affect the story, characters and/or series. The only problem I have really is the Nikki/Jessica character/ story. Her power doesn't seem that extraordinary and if it is, I'm not feeling it at all. So much good things to say about this show, so little space to say it in.

I swear that I must be the only one that likes the Nikki/Jessica story arc! Ali Larter plays the character very well as far as you feeling her duality as a person. The story sometimes gets dull but then so did the Hiro arc, and I wouldn`t even describe either really as "dull". I hope they continue to progress her character as the show goes on. Come to think about it, I think that the writers are screwiing her story up as far as it not being as interesting as the others. Like they didn`t even go into how Nikki even took control again. I know we can guess, but there are reasons shown for why Jessica takes over. Its like having Bruce Banner in one shot, not showing what happens and having the Hulk just pop up in the next one. There has to be a catalyst and they are doing a good enough job of showing it.

Heroes vs Lost.

I don't believe that Heroes will fall into the Lost trap as we have an entire world to dig up characters and situations while Lost is stuck on an island with a limited boundry. Lost is very quickly becoming Gilligan's Island were a new "visitor" shows up every week.

Heroes is a multidimentional show and works on many levels. Not every plotline/story arc can be your favourite as that would be like a steady diet of chocolate ice cream - sooner or later your just going to get sick of it. It is the diversity of the story arcs that keeps this show interesting.

Exceelent episode. Hiro's back on the save the world mission. Sylar and Peter are gonna have an all out fight.

Mohinder may not survive.

And Claire finds Granma.

I'll be particularly interested in seeing where they go with HRG.

i saw that scene the coming when the chick who could look like anyone told his wife she had nice hair.

I'm gonna call her mirage because of the shimmer effect when she changes, and because when I think of her as the illusionist I see Edward Norton in a mini skirt, a gottee and a pushup bra. And I just don't need that image.

I'm a little dissapointed we won't get to see more of him and his wife plotng and hoping their not getting, but it'll reallyinteresting to see where they go from here.

Obviously, they'll want to question him, to see if they can get any leads on Claire. And obviously that interrogation will include Parkman reading HRG's mind.

It'll be interesting to see how HRG and Parkman's recent alliance comes into play.

Parkman and HRG if e survives working to take down the Company from the inside would be a facinating plotline for the next season.

If the Company gets center stage next season that could well involve Hiro seeing as his dad's a major player there, and Claire and the Petrelli clan seeing as we just found out that Momma Petrelli's involved in their actions

Anybody starting to think that Daddy Petrelli(the dead one, not Nathan) did not commit suicide but was rather suicided by the Company. May have given Momma some added motivation.

By the way. I love the way Wohinder stepped up this episode. What seemed like unbeleivable stupidity was actually very clever planning. He new Sylar could kill him easily if Mhinder showed that he realized who he was. So he played dumb and got the drop on him.

I thought the thing with the Curarea keeping from controlling his powers was clever too. And I loved the way he used the pitch fork. Using Syalr's newly aquired power against him. Great stuff. If he dies, which seems likely, i'll be sorry to see him go.

I'm a little annoyed with Isaac, blaming Peter for Simone. "It's you're fault" [For not standing there and letting me blow your brains out] Yeah, that's logical. And who who was the dumb ass who fired blindly.

Yeah, I know Peter was invisible. And Isaac's little world nice stay visible when people are trying to shoot them. And, yes, he had no way of knowing Simone come by even though he gave a key. But all that being said. You Isaac there's little thing on the other side of that door called New York. And in there are these things called people who can get hit stray bullets and tend to die when they do.

It should not require an advaced degree in firearms safety to know these things. That said and looking back you'd Isaac I really should have looked to make sure there were no visible people nearby before firing.

And I still don't get why it never occurred to him, or apparently HRG that shooting Peter would set off Chernoble Pete, just like it did Radioactive Ted, and HRG and seemed to assume that would happen.

Not that his reaction after the fact was unrealistic. If he was poster child for taking personal responsiblity for his own life and action, he'd probably never have gotten to be a junky for sio long in the first place.

Peter of course, being Peter, did indeed take the blame on himself. Defining the difference between heroes and Company tools. I think Isaac will eventualy come out as a good guy, probably after doing a lot accidental damage. But he seriously needs good ass kinking and reality check before that's going to happen. Probably in that order.

With the idea of a rotating cast and a new storyline next season. I think Nikki/Jessi and fam might get more screen tie not less. i think they've been delierately kept on the bullpin so we'd have at least three(four if you're counting twice) familiar characters help the transition to a new cat. I think they may be doing the same with Parkman's story which see to only just be taking off.

Peter is so much at the center this season, I fear it doesn't bode well for the net. His involvment may conclude with his current storyline.

One character I woyuld especially like to see back at least prt time is Claude. Christopher Ecceston makes this character the coolest in the series. I could defintily see him coming in every season to Jedi train a new group of Heroes. His involvment would be particuarly appropriate for any story involving the company.

This was indeed an amazing episode, so many things happened and so fast! Heroes is, despite my initial reluctance to watch and skepticism that it would get bad, becoming my favorite tv show on right now. They keep up the reveals, they are good at adding new intrigues, and characters (for the most part) continue to grow and develop.
The previous episode with Bennet (I, too, dislike the "HRG" nickname) was about the best of the show so far. This current one falls a little shy of that, but that isn't saying bad things about it.

Unlike Lost and X-Files and other shows with mysteries and conspiracies and such, this show is refusing to drag out little mysteries and instead is whipping through them while working towards bigger mysteries.
If this was X-Files, the whole season would have been leading up to saving Claire from Sylar (the "save the cheerleader, save the world" statement - which I always thought that those were TWO separate things for them to do) with a bunch of "freaks of the week" appearing for hero x or hero y to stop.
If it was Lost, it wouldn't be until the season 's end before we even found out who Bennet is! (no, I still like Lost - but you know that's true)

I personally like the Nikki/Jessica story myself. And though I find Hiro amusing, he's not the best character in the show. There are many good characters. The only characters who ring a little false to me are the "big star" cast characters (Hiro's father, Bennet's boss, Linderman)

IF they do lose most of the cast and go off on another journey next season, I think that's a good decision. Could they make enjoyable tv and great stories staying with this cast and going along the same route they are going? Sure. Could bringing in a mostly new group of Heroes and flying off in a completely different direction make the show flop? Possibly. But, overall, I think the freshness gives the show a better chance to stay different than most of the rest of what is on tv (I like Smallville, I do, but a little story compression would be nice - after high school the show should have jumped into the future with Clark as a new reporter at the Planet, Welling's old enough for the jump in age.)

I'd definitely give Heroes an A. A good way to get over that crappy BSG episode on Sunday.

I was wondering if anyone else remembered that way back when Hiro from the future came back and told Peter to "save the cheer leader, save the world" he also said "you look different with out the scar"
I wonder if Peter gets the scar from this fight with Sylar? wasnt that how the show ended with Sylar starting to try and take the top of Pete's head off?

Even though I'm stoked about this show, I was a tad disappointed about this last episode, it felt uneven, like someone told the editors last minute to get to a certain point before the cut away for six weeks.

The company discovering Mr. Bennet's scheme came a little too quickly for me; I was thinking he'd work for the company a little while before they caught on, but I guess not. But I have definitely come to like his character more, so hopefully they won't do him in for real.

I'm tiring of Nikki/Jessica; I liked her more when she wasn't sure of what was going on; her role seemed very forced this epsiode. And I don't care for her kid either, but I doubt they would have shown his power over electronics(?) if they didn't plan to use him down the road. DL, I do like, and I hope to see more of him.

mbeck - Mirage is a great name for the new girl. Good call.

It took me a while to figure it out, but did anyone else think that Linderman's [MMc] beard was cut a bit too much like The Architect from the Matrix series? I wonder how similar their roles might be.

Wow, Ysid, going way back. The scar would make sense, except that we know Peter can heal. Since Peter has to concentrate to use another's powers, maybe he gets knocked out before he can heal himself? Or maybe Sylar's cutting is special? Still it would be cool to see Peter heal his wounds as Sylar cuts; I imagine that would really piss Sylar off. Obviously Peter will live, but will he save Mo? I like Mo, but I don't know if he should stick around.

So what all do we know that Peter "should" be able to do now? Fly, heal, disappear, paint the future, manipulate time/space to some degree... anything else? And Sylar? I know he has the "eat brain" ability as well as telekinesis, melt or de-stabalize atomic bonds of metals, super hearing... what else? And can Peter access the powers that Sylar has acquired? I guess we'll need to wait and see.

I'd give Heroes an A, but this episode gets a B.
