HEROES: Powerless

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, December 05, 2007

So, we’re finally here, the finale of volume 2 of Heroes and wow, was it jam packed with story. The thing about last season that was exciting was that by the finale the heroes had all come together for this big final even and battle. Now, I felt the battle was a little anti-climactic but it was still cool to see all the heroes together. This season featured them all sprinkled across the country once again and it seemed that they were once again being drawn together. Not so, there were actually four separate stories all the way to the end of this volume.

Sylar was a fantastic character in volume one. He’s been less than interesting this year due to his placement with new characters that nobody cared about. Over the last couple of episodes, his scenes have improved and his finale of this volume was riveting. At any rate, he kidnaps Mohinder, Molly, and eventually Maya (once she learns his true nature) and forces Mohinder to give up the antidote to the virus which the company injected him with, causing the loss of his power. Now had Sylar not had some great lines, this would have been the weakest story of the four. Things do get exciting at the end of the story however when Elle shows up to try and capture him to please her father. Of course, he escapes leading us to the exciting cliffhanger of volume three. Elle cracked me up when Bob is berating her and she says “how’s about if I say I’m sorry”. She’s a great character, the only good new one in fact. Could she be switching sides at some point? Elle does learn a bit of the testing Bob put her through from the incarcerated Bennett. She seemed awfully happy when she realized she had saved Mohinder and the gang’s lives. I like her as a villain and I hope she stays that way. Maybe she could be interesting as a Black Cat sort of anti hero. The fake out death of Maya really irritated me. I don’t like this character and was ready to see her go.

Some of you mentioned that the Micah story was the least interesting and most unnecessary of the stories last week and looking back, I’m inclined to agree. I like that he was trying to put together a super hero team but the actual story is weak. Having Nikki die as part of this story was kind of like having Captain Kirk die in the weakest of the Star Trek films. Nikki was a character that took a really long time to get interesting but I had grown to sort of like seeing her around. There’s always the potential that she isn’t dead, but Kring has been promising a hero would die. So, which is it Nathan or Nikki?

Speaking of Nathan, we do get a super group in the form of Nathan, Matt, and eventually Hiro going up against Adam and Peter. The initial fight between Peter and Hiro is great and it ends in only the way it could. Hiro does have better control over his power than Peter but Peter just has so many options to choose from. Peter is such a dunce and he doesn’t realize it until it’s absolutely too late. The fight between Peter, Matt, Hiro, and Nathan is regrettably short but I did find all of the action this year more satisfying than the final last year. It wasn’t focused on in the episode but Hiro is a vengeful little dude. Rather than simply kill Adam, he buries him alive. Now Hiro may not have known how to kill Adam but there are other options Hiro could have taken to take care of Adam. I like this option because Adam may eventually find his way free and he could very well be insane by then.

In the aftermath, Nathan decides to take the same route as Claire and tell the world about his abilities. He has Matt use his talents to get the press to listen to what he has to say. His speech is well written and powerful and cut under a montage of shots of the various heroes and villains using their powers but just as he is about to make the big reveal he is shot. When the camera pans up we see what we are to assume is the shooter making his escape. Did anyone else think it was Bennett? This is where two stories do cross if I’m right. Bennett makes a deal with the company to come back into the fold and stop Claire from going public and in exchange the company will leave her and her family alone. This could make for a fantastic story for Bennett in volume three.

This episode felt rushed overall. There was a lot crammed in to it that could have been expanded upon had these events been stretched over a couple of episodes. The virus story just never grabbed me the way the explosion story did in season one, mostly because the virus story felt like just more of the same. Now, with that said the fights, the drama, and the cliffhangers in the episode were exciting. It wasn’t perfect, because Micah’s story killed off a character fairly anticlimactically and Claire had very little to do, but those who fought really had some great action. I’m giving this episode an A but if I were to grade the entire season, I’d give it a C.

I thought it was cool. Things were tied up pretty well considering there was supposed to be at least two more episodes. I thought the writer's strike would have made it weak but it was good. I was satisfied. Funny thing is that I was reading another blog about some guy claiming to work on the show and he knew how it was going to end and he "spoiled' it for anyone that wanted to know. No one believed him...well, I guess he was right...he pretty much nailed it on the head all what was going to happen. Next, time I'll just take people's word for it when they say stuff like that.

I keep thinking Maya is still linked to the epidemic in the future. They also haven't tied up the fact that Peter's girlfriend is in the future. This episode just didn't have the impact I was hoping for, although Nathan's death was handled well.

I cheered when Maya was taken out and had a good few chuckles over what was said when it was done..

Sylar looking at the camera (Suresh off-screen): "See what you made me do."

*fires*

*Maya drops dead*

It felt like a line delivered straight for the fans of Heroes from the creators because the characters were so unpopular.

Then, of course, they bring her back and disappointment set in..

I liked what Hiro ended up doing with Adam for two reasons. It gives Adam a chance to come back in the future and it shows off alittle of Hiro's darker side/dark humor. In some ways, leaving him in a coffin in the same graveyard where his father and mother now rest is much more sinister then simply chopping his head off.

I bet it was Noah who fired the shots there at the end against Nathan but I think I agreed with a family member in the statement.."I hope that's not Noah!". That would literally kill all progress between Noah and Claire. I am somewhat happy that Noah's no longer hiding though..He's a strong character and I like him staying in the shade of gray then being a black or white character. Basically, the CSM effect.

It seems like Nikki is dead but I'm not sure on Nathan just yet. The tv reporter at the end made it a habit of saying "He was shot.."....not "He was killed...". There's still a way out for Nathan to return. Heck, same for Nikki since they didn't actually show her die but I'm thinking her character is really gone more than Nathans...

Oh right, I can't wait for the next chapter of the show. Just the last moments of Sylar "rising" and the title of the next segment sold me.

Villains!

Just the title alone for the next volumn intrigues me. Will it be based solely around numerous villains (Sylar, Adam, etc) looking for the top "I'm the true God"-type character amongst each other? Will it focus on villains joining together to fight the heroes of the show in a united effort?

The possibilities look good for that type of storyline and I can't wait.

that was definitely Noah who shot Nathan. It made for a very gasp-worthy ending and i loved it. HRG 4 life.

the adds said 2 would die. but we had 2 shot and 1 blown up. I too was disapointed that Maya wasn't dead, as seems to be the consensus i just don't care about her AT ALL. Her power is boring, she's a total sucker, and no offense to the actress (she seemed genuinely nice speaking at comic-con) but i just don't see what use she is. As for Nathan. Would Peter be able to save him w/ his blood? He can mimic Claire/Adam's power, so shouldn't his blood heal as well? just a thought. And Nikki will be back. its a well known rule in comics, no body=no dead.

It was also interesting to see the brother's switch roles from last season. One being part of an ill-informed evil scheme and the other there to stop them.

does anyone else think Sylar will eventually dig up Adam and form a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants?

I, for one, couldn't help but cry "NO!" when Sylar shot Maya.

Say what you will about her character. Maya is freaking hot.

I will keep my statements short this week.

I hope to hell they include the missing episodes for the dvd set. Between the strike and the new trend for these stupid mid season breaks, TV is really pissing my off.

Like the rest of you the new characters didn't really sink hooks in me either, although the mimic girl has potential to become interesting, especially if her memory effect has limitations as some of you mentioned last week. On Maya, I'll give this character the Matt benefit. Last season Matt's power seemed kind of blah blah after a couple of episodes, but changed this season to be incredibly interesting and open to many possiblities (including dream episodes). I have a feeling Maya's power will evolve interstingly as well. She is still completly green with exploring it with a capitol G. here's to hoping.

finally, I repeat, please give us the missing episodes in the DVD set.

I was very disappointed with the season finale for a couple of reasons.
The Hiro/Peter fight wasn't that exciting, and the Hiro/Adam was even worse. They didn't even bother showing what happened between them, just poof, Adam in a coffin(which was cool by the way). How is it that a shot to the head can kill them but Peter was able to explode in a nuclear blast and still be alive?

The twins storyline ultimately fizzled out in my opinion, I thought something with Maya would happen at least, but those scences in the end could've worked without her just fine. I hope that after all running storyline from the twins they gave us the writers make better use of her for the next volume. Another thing I'll never understand is why would the twins who were in the Dominican Republic, travel to South America and then make their way up to the States when going from the Dominican Republic to the States was much easier and logical.

The Monica storyline served just to kill off Nikki? I hope they use her some more next volume also.

Overall I enjoed the episode, loved the Sylar parts, but I guess I expected more. Looking foward to Volume 3: "Villains"

Wiggley, what missing episodes would you like? There are no more episodes. We've seen all they've produced so far. If the strike is resolved in time, more will air in the spring after production resumes. If not Volume 3 will start next fall as Season 3.

This season wa sa bit of a let down, but I think it was due to the strike. Kring did admit some of the storylines dragge don too long, but I think with more episodes, we would have gotten a better build up to a more satisfactory conclusion. Things seemed a little rushed, but I still think it is better than most other shows out there.

I didn't care for the fact that they introduced a couple of characters with (what I thought were) cool powers only as a device to get Sylar back to civilization. I also don't get how this episode got the highest grade of any so far this season. The finale seemed REALLY rushed to me. I understand why it seemed rushed, as they had to rewrite the ending to make it the season finale instead of just the episode before the break, but I would imagine the original ending still would have left a cliffhanger of some sort, so why not just leave the season be and make it up in the next season? As for the comment about Kirk dying in the weakest of the "Star Trek" movies, the author obviously has never seen "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"...SHATNER SHOULD NEVER DIRECT EVER AGAIN.
