So, we’re finally here, the finale of volume 2 of Heroes and wow, was it jam packed with story. The thing about last season that was exciting was that by the finale the heroes had all come together for this big final even and battle. Now, I felt the battle was a little anti-climactic but it was still cool to see all the heroes together. This season featured them all sprinkled across the country once again and it seemed that they were once again being drawn together. Not so, there were actually four separate stories all the way to the end of this volume.
Sylar was a fantastic character in volume one. He’s been less than interesting this year due to his placement with new characters that nobody cared about. Over the last couple of episodes, his scenes have improved and his finale of this volume was riveting. At any rate, he kidnaps Mohinder, Molly, and eventually Maya (once she learns his true nature) and forces Mohinder to give up the antidote to the virus which the company injected him with, causing the loss of his power. Now had Sylar not had some great lines, this would have been the weakest story of the four. Things do get exciting at the end of the story however when Elle shows up to try and capture him to please her father. Of course, he escapes leading us to the exciting cliffhanger of volume three. Elle cracked me up when Bob is berating her and she says “how’s about if I say I’m sorry”. She’s a great character, the only good new one in fact. Could she be switching sides at some point? Elle does learn a bit of the testing Bob put her through from the incarcerated Bennett. She seemed awfully happy when she realized she had saved Mohinder and the gang’s lives. I like her as a villain and I hope she stays that way. Maybe she could be interesting as a Black Cat sort of anti hero. The fake out death of Maya really irritated me. I don’t like this character and was ready to see her go.
Some of you mentioned that the Micah story was the least interesting and most unnecessary of the stories last week and looking back, I’m inclined to agree. I like that he was trying to put together a super hero team but the actual story is weak. Having Nikki die as part of this story was kind of like having Captain Kirk die in the weakest of the Star Trek films. Nikki was a character that took a really long time to get interesting but I had grown to sort of like seeing her around. There’s always the potential that she isn’t dead, but Kring has been promising a hero would die. So, which is it Nathan or Nikki?
Speaking of Nathan, we do get a super group in the form of Nathan, Matt, and eventually Hiro going up against Adam and Peter. The initial fight between Peter and Hiro is great and it ends in only the way it could. Hiro does have better control over his power than Peter but Peter just has so many options to choose from. Peter is such a dunce and he doesn’t realize it until it’s absolutely too late. The fight between Peter, Matt, Hiro, and Nathan is regrettably short but I did find all of the action this year more satisfying than the final last year. It wasn’t focused on in the episode but Hiro is a vengeful little dude. Rather than simply kill Adam, he buries him alive. Now Hiro may not have known how to kill Adam but there are other options Hiro could have taken to take care of Adam. I like this option because Adam may eventually find his way free and he could very well be insane by then.
In the aftermath, Nathan decides to take the same route as Claire and tell the world about his abilities. He has Matt use his talents to get the press to listen to what he has to say. His speech is well written and powerful and cut under a montage of shots of the various heroes and villains using their powers but just as he is about to make the big reveal he is shot. When the camera pans up we see what we are to assume is the shooter making his escape. Did anyone else think it was Bennett? This is where two stories do cross if I’m right. Bennett makes a deal with the company to come back into the fold and stop Claire from going public and in exchange the company will leave her and her family alone. This could make for a fantastic story for Bennett in volume three.
