Heroes Season Three DVD Review

Greatest TV DVD Set Ever?Just Maybe!

After a lackluster season two, Heroes came back for season three with the unusual strategy of essentially giving fans two seasons in one.  Season three (volumes 3 and 4 of  the series) presented two distinctly diverse storylines.

The first half of the season might best be described as the “ Battle for the Formula”.  That is the formula used to create people with abilities.  On one side we have the revived Arthur Petrelli leading a group of villains including Mohinder Suresh, Tracy Strauss, Sylar, son Nathan, and new characters Flint Gordon Jr., Knox, and Daphne Millbrook.  Opposing them are Peter Petrelli, Hiro, Ando, Matt Parkman, Claire, and HRG.  It is revealed that the formula alone is not enough to give a person abilities but that a catalyst is needed, which is hidden inside one of the characters.

The first half of season three suffered from many of the same problems which plagued season three, namely disjointed plotlines, and too many characters.  The future Peter Petrelli attempts to kill his brother and then future Claire attempts to kill future Peter.  Most of this diabolically fragmented mess is quickly forgotten about and for the betterment of the show.

On the other hand, the second half of season three truly shined.  Somewhat mirroring the events in Marvel Comics’ Civil War story, people with abilities are being hunted down by agents of the Department of Homeland Security, led by Danko, easily the best villain of the series.  The captured heroes are imprisoned and their powers nullified.  Again, a small group of heroes fights against the government agents while staying on the run.  The other key plotlines of the second half are Sylar’s quest for his own origin as he tracks down his biological father.  We also learn about the secret government facility disguised as a Summer camp who performed experiments on the kids with abilities back in the early 1960s.

The second half of the season helped to restore some of the waning interest in the show.  The number of characters was reduced and concentrated on those who are the foundation of the show.  Heroes might not have a very long shelf life as ratings are on the decline, but it heads into season four with momentum.

Come to think of it, it's almost like they looked at the show 24 and borrowed there "formula". In 24 theres always 2 major threats. The first one which you think is the primary threat is neutralized in the first half of the season before it's revealed that there is actually a secondary threat lurking in the background. This show is just a mixed bag for me and I'm skeptical that they will ever find there groove. Like a zombie I'll keep tuning in with fingers crossed...

Wow a 'B' really? While Season 3 was a step forward from Season 2 it was a baby step at best, I will agree that Danko was the only good thing about this season. The step back from season 1 is still to much to bare if this show dosen't pick it up in the next few Episodes I am done and to me it looks like a long shot to pull that off. I'm sure the extras are ok but I have to disagree with the quality of Season 3, I would give it a 'C' at the very most. I'm a good guy, no wait I'm a bad guy, no I'm a good guy, no I'm a bad guy, but my memories are gone and its such a good Idea to put a Pshycopath in a position of power, great writing bleh!

I agree with you Hudson, I'll give it a chance but after a few weeks I will deep 6 it if its the same shit as last season.

bear in mind that the "B" grade takes into account the high quality of the special features.  It's a full review of the whole set.

I ain't giving nothing, I'm officially done with Heroes.  Got better stuff to see on Mondays like How I Met Your Mother and House.

joeybaloney 9/16/2009 7:56:32 AM

Taking a nap on Mondays would be a better thing to do than stick w/this show. Total failure.

Yeah Hudson, Season 3 was not good. I'll give this new season a few episodes but man they've been throwing darts trying to see what sticks.

I agree with the other posters, this season was terrible.  I'm done with the show.

What's most infuriating is that the concept of the show is so intriguing but so badly executed.  Hell, even the concepts of the plotlines could work, excepting that formula nonsense.  But I was intrigued by anti-hero Sylar, until he reverted back to his crazed psychopath persona for no apparent reason.  Or the idea of the government rounding up people with abilities, which could have been an excellent chance to explore issues of paranoia and profiling.

For a show that is basically X-Men without the costumes, the writers (clearly comic book fans) should go back and read some of the better X-stories and learn how to properly juggle multiple characters and provide a humanizing depth and astute social metaphors to this mess of a show.  Not that I plan on watching.

Now NBC Thursdays with "The Office" and "30 Rock?"  I'm there! :-)

I have this box set but haven't checked it out yet. I wasn't able to catch the entire season so it will all be fairly new to me. Thougn some of you may be down on HEROES I have to say I'm impressed that a tv network would tak a gamble on such a show in the first place.

HudsonTaco 9/16/2009 3:23:59 PM

Fair enough on the special feature if they are as good as you say, however I would never buy any DVD box set of a season if the season itself was not worth watching so I stand by my earlier comments. Special features are great if they accompany something great and this show lost it along time ago.
