"Heroes: Unexpected"

By: STEPHEN LACKEY
Review Date: Thursday, February 22, 2007

Well I can’t believe it!  The promises made by the promotion of this series are finally fulfilled!  Someone did fly, and someone also died!  Also in this episode we get a new super group formed of Matt, Ted, and the new heroine Wireless.  Claire finally reveals to her father that she retained her memory and a lot more.  This episode was packed with action and events that will have a long term effect on the heroes, just what I was hoping for.

Let me start with what I didn’t like, and haven’t liked in a few episodes: the Hiro/Ando story.  Their story has been nothing but filler for at least three episodes.  Last week, Ando was duped by an Amazon-like woman and found himself this week with a gun to his head after he discovered the truth about what he was helping her steal.  Hiro is approached by a man he believes works for the gaming commission but instead the man is the one that Ando stole the bag from.  A gunfight ensues with Ando and Hiro hiding out of the way and watching.  Hiro comes to believe that Ando should not be helping him on his mission because he will get hurt so Hiro leaves him at the end of their story.  This is the only bit of substance to their story line in three weeks.  The fact that Hiro’s power suddenly works to save his and Ando’s life may be significant too. The obvious problem I have with this story is that it’s just filler having nothing to do with the mission.

I also feel that the partnership between Mohinder and Sylar is problematic.  While it’s interesting to have the man responsible for the death of Mohinder’s father now working with him, I think after the death of a new hero it should be obvious to Mohinder that there’s a problem.  The two go meet a woman with super hearing and agree to return the next day for testing.  When they return the woman is dead.  Mohinder’s a smart guy; I think he should be putting two and two together.

I have really enjoyed the Jedi training of Peter and it continues in the beginning of this episode leading to Peter truly taking control of his abilities and flying in order to save himself and Claude when they are attacked by HRG and a hit squad.  Peter’s flight was exhilarating, more so than anything on Smallville so far.  Claude leaves Peter because he believes (rightfully so) that Peter has brought him back to the attention of HRG.  All of this starts after Issac calls HRG because he believes that Peter is solely responsible for the coming nuclear explosion, and he’s jealous because Peter took his girl.  HRG leaves Isaac a gun and tells him to use it if he sees Peter.  When Peter does appear Isaac draws the gun and Peter disappears causing Isaac to shoot and kill Simone.  I never really cared for this character but she may be the instrument that turns Isaac fully into a Lex Luthor type character committing him fully to working with HRG.  If that’s the case as much as I disliked Simone she served an important purpose.  I could only see her try to return that key so many times anyway.  Also interesting to note is that Peter uses one of Sylar’s powers during a training session.  Does he only have access to the power that Sylar used when they were together or does he now share all of the powers that Sylar has accumulated?

I absolutely love how this series is assembling super groups in such a grounded and dramatic way. In this episode we get a team I’d liken to The X-Men.  They seem to be heroes but they are more interested in helping their own kind against the government at this point.  Ted, the radioactive man, and a new hero, a slick looking female named Wireless, and Matt form a plan to get the information they need from HRG to bust out all the others like them from HRG’s labs.  In an intense scene they bust into HRG’s house and take him hostage.  This is some real super group action and it got me extremely excited for next week.

Claire finally reveals to HRG that she still knows everything and that she blames him for her mother’s current state.  He tells her that he believes that her mother shouldn’t have to know about all of this and that if word about Claire’s abilities got out that she’d be in real danger.  She tells him that she wishes she could run away but she has to stay to defend her family against him.  I’ve been waiting for this confrontation and it was worth the wait.  Claire is in the house when Matt, Ted, and Wireless show up to interrogate HRG.  It’ll be interesting to see if she tries to get her mother and brother to safety or if she sticks around to hear the interrogation.

This episode seemed to clip along at a breakneck pace, just how I like it.  I’m sure next week we’ll see Jessica’s return as she attempts to assassinate Nathan.  I didn’t miss her this week and I’ll probably want to see her scenes speed by so we can get back to the conflict at HRG’s house.  At any rate, if Hiro would have had more important and meaningful scenes, this would have been a perfect episode.

I don't think Hiro's recent storyline has been completely useless. Drawn out, yes, but we got to see him figure out that his friend's presence could be more of a fatal hinderance than help. I think his solo journey and being able to integrate with the other "heroes" will further him along a lot faster towards that darker, mysterious, future Hiro we saw in the subway many episodes ago. It's just a lead up.
Plus we got to see that his power isn't really gone, just lying dormant for whatever reason. I think he just needs to want it badly enough...or to have enough faith in himself. The "magic sword" will be nothing more than Dumbo's feather. Just something he THINKS he needs, but really doesn't.

I kinda liked that woman with the hearing abilities...sad to see her go so quickly.

I put my review for this show in our Heroes forum. The link at the bottom of the article will take our users directly to the "Unexpected" Reviews thread in question.

I'll just say here this was perhaps my favorite written show so far. It's definitely my personal favorite.

A- ? Please that was A+ all the way! All, I can say is that Heroes just keeps getting better and better. I don`t have a problem with Hiro/Ando`s story because while it hasn`t been all that exciting and was dragging on a bit, it is relatively unorthodox when it comes to "superhero" stories. The mission is important but at the same time, they are still human beings that stray of course and end up in stupid situations which is something I always liked about reading the X-men and Spidey. And the story did put Hiro in a place where whether he realizes it or not, he has used his powers. So he doesn`t really need that sword.
The first thing I thought while watching towards the end when Mohinder and Sylar went back to the dead hero was, "Come on now Mohinder! You have to be able to put 2 and 2 together!" The mechanic with super hearing had a headache, now suddenly Sylar has a headache, "Hello!!!" I mean maybe he is just blinded by the fact that he has someone with powers who actually believes him and is ready to supposedly help, but I don`t know. If they go find somebody, the person ends up dead again, and he doesn`t figure it out, then he`s an idiot and in tv terms deserves what he gets. I don`t think as part of the audience I can suspend my disbelief that far. Mohinder would have to be the dumbest guy on the planet. Stevie Wonder could see it.
As far as the Peter and Issac, I`m kind of surprised that they killed Simone. I kind of thought that Nathan would end up doing something to her, after the discussion about telling the public about the "Heroes". What was the point of that, if she was going to be blasted by Issac? Its almost like Karma got her. The thing is Peter got all Anakin Skywalker in SW3 on Isaac. It was great to see him fly too, but I disagree that it was amazingly better than anything in Smallville. When Clark flew as Kal, that was damn cool.
Next week should be freakin mindblowing because we get to learn more about HRG. Its like that episode in X-Files when they focused on the Smoking Man`s story. Should be freakin Sweet!

I thought the episode was great, and I don't mind the slow parts with Hiro and Ando.

Anyone else think that maybe Hiro isn't the one that reversed the bullet back into the chamber? Perhaps Ando isn't as plain as we've been led to beleive, and we may just see more of him.

#4 - I thought that as well. But I think Ando is gonna stay "muggle." The Heroes need normal friends and relations to interact with, for both contrasting of those with powers to those without, and to connect the Heroes with real-world consequences, which is a central theme of the whole show.
This episode was great.

One thing of note from this episode, in regards to the Hiro/Ando time disruption is that it was NOT a typical time disruption.

He forced part of reality in reverse, ando, shooter, and bullet, while the rest of time/space continued on normally.

This being evident because the man from the gaming commission was still in motion to tackle her, yet parts of time and space were going in reverse.

This either points in a deviation in his powers, or a continuity error.

Also as stated above, in the review, about the man 'believed' to be with the gaming commission. It is implied that he wasnt, in the article, but I believe he was supposed to be from the gaming commission, but he is dirty, and she was his accomplice.

I liked this heroes, but I dont like the dopey cliche's IE: Simone getting shot accidentally. It played out too much like a daytime soap opera to me.

I also dont believe that wireless is a good character unless you pick a 'side' to view it from. I think she is sort of the 'magnito' and if you are pro 'mutant' you will rally behind her, but if you value humanity as a whole, she will be an antagonist.

Just my .02c

I was a bit sad to see Simone go actually. But that said. Dramatic ending to an extraordinary episode.

And I definitely agree, that it's good to see some real follow through on the promos promises.

After leaving the story line fallow for awhile, it's great to see Matt and his new teamates making a real push to dind the anwsers he's been searching for. And it promises to be a great lead in to getting some back story on HRG.

I love it even moere that Claire was present when they showed up, now she stands to get some much needed answers herself.

Just when it looked like Matt was getting pushed to the background, he suddenly takes center astage on at least two major storylines.

The Hiro/Ando bit could have been stronger, but at least it lead to something of real consequence to Hiro. Granted it would've been better if we could have seen this revelation occure during actions more directly related to finding Linderman and getting the sword.

And while the headaches and the body wouldn't be proof positive that that Mohinder's new partner is in fact Sylar, one point dosn't a pattern and all that, but one would think it would make him suspicious, for that matter one would think Sylar would be a little more careful tthan to kill the first person they find together instead of waiting 'til they fund a few more one 'til he could steal the whole list.

I don't think we can quite put Peter on the Darkside yet. Though it would be interesting on the darkside front if he absorbed Sylar's violent tendencies along with his powers.

He had very good reason to be righteously pissed at Isaac whose actions, from Peter's perspective, may have doomed him and hundreds of thousands of others.

He could easily have killed Isaac, but he didn't. And frankly I liked seeing the extra spunk in a character, who had been a little too nice.

Isaac on the other hand did try to kill Peter, from his perspective to save the world. Though a bit recklessly.

My first thought in that sequence was: what if shooting Peter would set him off and cause the very explosion Isaac was trying to stop? And I wondered why that never crossed Isaacs mind.

I dont know whether Simone's death will put him more in HRG's corner or scare him straight. I could definitely see her death putting Peter in dark side. Possibly to the point of making a real attempt at Isaac's life.

Peter is fast becoming the most powerful of the Heroes. His going darkside might be interesting afterall.

I do hope we haven't seen the last of Claude. He's about coolest guy in the cast. Too coold to stay gone long. And he doubtless has things to teach all the Heroes, not just Peter.

I think Mohinder might now be a little suspicious of Sylar. Look at his face when he gets out of the car and notices Sylar geeking out and then the lady dead. And if I was Mohinder and it in fact dawned on me that Sylar was Sylar I don't think I'd bring it to his attention. You know what I mean?
I don't know what I'd do but I wouldn't let him in on the fact that I knew who he was.

I have read elsewhere that Simone will linger on for a few more episodes before biting the dust in early March. So... perhaps only someone flew.

Cmon, no one's going to comment on Stan Lee making a cameo as the bus driver at the end? Pretty sweet I thought. Kind of the comic book guru blessing the show sorta thing.
