Warner Bros. Pictures has hired Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor to write the big screen version of the comicbook JONAH HEX.

The story created by Jonah Hex created by John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, centers on Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, who is a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood.

Andrew Lazar and Akiva Goldsman will produce HEX, which will not simply be a Western but rather more of a tale about the character of Jonah Hex with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise.

Sweet! Considering this is the only DC comic left that I can read now (the others have all been tainted by that Countdown crap), I'm definitely looking forward to this. Hopefully it won't end up in Dev Hell like most WB projects.

daforce; I recommend moving to Vertigo. I abandoned the mainstream DC and Marvel comics years ago, (with the exception of Astonishing X-Men out of loyalty to Joss Whedon). I mostly stick to Vertigo, Image and Dark Horse comics now. They don't don't have to conform to the overarching plotlines and worry about cross-book continuity issues that the Countdown and Civil War titles are strapped with. As for the news above, I will believe it when I see it. The comic book film industry is getting pretty glutted. Producers are going to have a hard time getting second tier comic books made when their competition is going to be Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man, perhaps the Justice League, etc.

daforce-- Boy, Jonah Hex has been good this past year too. I'm not sure what they'll use for the screenplay, but Hex has tons of background to work with. Did you pick up the collected DC softcover that had all the old Jonah Hex stories? Most of them are from the 70s, but it was a great read.

lincolnparadox, no I didn't pick up the softcover trade. I saw it, but I haven't picked it up. Kerrith, I really can't get into the Vertigo line. Reminds me too much of whiny goth music (no offense meant). Civil War and WWH actually *are* working at changing the Marvel continuity for the better (ie. not stagnant as it has been for the past 10 years or so). You can see that Marvel has a plan, whereas DC appears to be completely winging it.

Vertigo is DC's last bastion of decent comics (and some great ones)...stuff like Countdown has absolutely ruined DC's superhero books.

Could somebody tell me about Jonah Hex? The only time I've ever really heard of him was when he guest starred on Batman: TAS. Why is the Countdown such a sucky story? Is it retconning everything like Infinite Crisis?

Would be nice if they made this. We'll see.
