Mania Box Office Report: Yo Joe!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation wins Easter Weekend

By Robert T. Trate     April 01, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

Was it nostalgia or was it that we have all forgotten by Stephen Sommers original film? Perhaps we just love the idea of G.I.Joe that much, that we are willing to fork over our money? No I got it. It was the Tatum! Channing Tatum brought out the ladies. Whatever the reason, G.I. Joe: Retaliation won the holiday weekend.

Ray Subers over at Box Office Mojo thought it was a strong marketing, reshoots (the Tatum), and pushing the film back that secured a great weekend for the Joes. He also had this to report: “The G.I. Joe sequel grossed an estimated $41.2 million this weekend, which ranks as the second-highest Easter debut ever behind 2010's Clash of the Titans ($61.2 million). Including Thursday, the movie has earned $51.7 million; that's a bit below G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's $54.7 million three-day start in August 2009. For its three major stars, this is also a potent opening: it ranks third-highest for Channing Tatum, second-highest for The Rock, and it's remarkably the top debut ever for a Bruce Willis movie".

It is great weekend for genre fans as a whole new Evil Dead will descend upon us. I personally cannot wait. However, I would be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t really looking forward to seeing Jurassic Park in IMAX and 3D. If anything this weekend promises a few screams!

I thought GI JOE was  pretty good. Lots of action and cool fights.

Finally caught OZ. Have to admit that I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. Kunis still gets no props from me and in my eyes remains highly overrated. I thought her second role part was easily the worse thing in the movie

And I must've done something terribly wrong in God's eyes because watching The Host was pure punishment from above. Damn I really did think the premise had promise but it's true, this chick can't write worth a damn. I ended up looking at my brain I was rolling my eyes so much. And that's from me, one of the most forgiving movie fans

No surprise to me that it was number one. It has a franchise brand name that's popular. I am surprised the TheHost was so far down the list. I guess vampires are alot sexier than alien possessed studboys.

Didn't get to see Joe or Olympus as I planned. I'll probably save it for next weekend. Although I like the original Evil Deads, I'm not really a gore porn enjoyer and that's what this new version  looks like to me.

GiJoe 3 greenlit thanks to these numbers! :)

I liked Oz too but agree Wise, Kunis as the wicked green skinned witch didn't do it for me. They should have used an entirely different actress. To me, she was just Jackie from That 70s show dressed as a witch.

Exactly my thoughts ElBaz

JP in I-Max baby. And of course Evil Dead, both are must sees

@Monkeyfoot & Wiseguy,

Apparantly at WonderCon, the Evil Dead director said there will 2 sequals to this, as well as an "Army of Darkness 2", both franchises will crossover in Evil Dead 7.  This movie looks off the charts, and the early reports I have read state that they do not know how they got an R rating.  So the Director's Cut should be that much better.  Definitly a must-see next weekend.

I'm on the fence about GI Joe.  So is it worth the trip to the theater or should I wait for the Redbox?

Saw Olympus has Fallen today, $5 matinees on Tuesdays.

It was a fun brainless action movie.
