Over at Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, the gossip maven continues to crack 'Thor' casting decisions.

Today she reports that Tom Hiddleston has been cast to play the villainous Loki in the movie.

Mostly unknown to moviegoers in the U.S., Hiddleston has been seen in HBO 's 'The Gathering Storm'. He's also top-lining a Mysterpiece Mystery called 'Wallander' on the BBC for Kenneth Branagh who is, of course, the director of 'Thor'.

His name was first raised in the casting specualtion sweepstakes by Finke herself, back in March. At that time she said he was a contender for the lead role.

While doing press for 'Wallander', Branagh commented on the rumor saying, "Tom Hiddleston is a great actor and he, amongst a number of others, has been part of the group we've spoken to and all that's still a work in progress."

As you Maniacs certainly know, Finke broke the news on Satrday that Chris Hemsworth has been cast in the lead role.

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

What do you think, Maniacs? Are we excited about THOR now?

Was he the guy that "Starsky-looking" guy wit the curlyish hair on Wallender? If so, yes, I can definitely see that...

'll repeat, I don't think I've ever seen Hiddleston in anything so I don't have an opinion except to say that he definitely looks white and pale enough to look like he came from frost giants. And he doesn't look like Hemsworth, which like I said don't matter since their characters are just step brothers

I liked this news better when Wiseguy told me about it.  Seriously, what's up with this site putting up their stuff after everyone else?

Also, what's a Tom Hiddleston?

The headgear on the costumes could be an issue.I wonder how Branagh feels about Beta Ray Bill for a sequel.

Any word on how Odin is going to be portrayed?

I would have gone with a more handsome actor like Jude Law, to make it less obvious that Loki was the villain. Jack Kirby's Loki was good-looking, but while Thor and most asgardians were blond and sturdy, Loki was black-haired and thinner. But no matter, Hiddleston is probably a gifted actor, and he better be, because Loki is the meatier role in the Thor movie. A character very very close to Branagh's Iago in Othello.

I don't know if the director reads this, but I would like to suggest that the uber-important Don Blake role be played by a forty-something actor to play up the contrast with the forever young Thor. The mighty Thor is my favorite character, but Dr. Blake is the anchor to the audience. Remember Thor is a Viking god, flies using a magic hammer and speaks shakespearean english. The fact that he is a walking talking anachronism is what makes him cool, but also what sets him apart. I could see the previously mentioned Kevin McKidd playing Blake, but for some strange reason I would love to see Tom Cavanaugh providing a little light and humor on that role. Remember that Nordic mythology deals with Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, and that's a lot of doom and gloom. The perfect Odin would be Liam Neeson, but I could see Branagh himself play that role. Piper Perabo would be real nice as Jane Foster and former Miss Universe Denise Qui-nones would be a fine Lady Sif, she has done a lot of television, but works mostly in the New York theatre scene. Tom Welling might make a fine Balder and an Angelina Jolie type would fit Karnilla just great.
