Two series that Viz Media had a hard time making a go of it with on the DVD front a few years back have made their way to their streaming sites and are now moving to the download to own category as well. The complete runs of Hikaru no Go and MAR will be available for purchase and rental across such strong platforms as iTunes, PlayStation® Network, and Amazon Video on Demand.
The complete series for HIKARU NO GO (Episodes 1-75) and MÄR (Episodes 1-52) will be presented dubbed and uncut, and will be available immediately from the iTunes Store in the U.S. (www.iTunes.com) and Canada (www.iTunes.ca). As a special promotion, Episode 1 from each series will be available for FREE download through August 23, 2011!
Amazon Video on Demand and the PlayStation® Network video delivery service, available exclusively for the Sony PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3™) entertainment systems, will offer Season 1 of HIKARU NO GO and MÄR, beginning with Episodes 1-3. New installments will be released every Monday. Episode 1 from each series will be available for FREE download through March 22, 2011.
All episodes are $0.99 each for Download-To-Rent and $1.99 for Download-To-Own across all platforms.
HIKARU NO GO is a unique story that revolves around the ancient Japanese strategy game of Go, and is based on the manga written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (also published domestically by VIZ Media). Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal kid with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. His life completely changes when he finds an old bloodstained go board in his grandfather's attic. The ghost of an ancient go master named Fujiwara-no-Sai was trapped in the board and soon becomes a part of Hikaru's consciousness. Together Hikaru and Sai make an unstoppable go-playing team!
MÄR is based on the hit manga series by Nobuyuki Anzai (creator also of FLAME OF RECCA), published in North America by VIZ Media. An ordinary middle-school boy with an overactive imagination, Ginta Toramizu dreams about fairy tales and make-believe lands. One day at school, a gate appears and he enters the World of MÄR, the world of his dreams. Within the World of MÄR exist ÄRM: accessories with unique powers. Soon, Ginta stumbles upon Babbo, an ÄRM that can speak, and learns that he has been summoned to this mythical world to stop the Chess Pieces, a group of rogue soldiers, from destroying the World of MÄR. Now part of Team MÄR, Ginta and Babbo fight in War Games against the Chess Pieces to save the MÄR World. But will Ginta’s mission be compromised by his ally’s secrets?

So to own, this would mean Hikaru No Go would be $149.25 and MAR would be 103.48.

yea give me a break!!!!.just but all on a dvd collection under $50.00 and they will sell.this is just another way to get to the heart of the matter in why now do they offer this when they clearly cut the dvd production some years ago.I WILL ALSO PASS AND WAIT FOR THE DVD COLLECTION TO COME IF EVER.

How about at least finishing the DVD run of Hikaru No Go?  I'm pretty sure I've spent more than $150 on those discs.  And it kills me that I can't complete it.  Streaming is nice, but I'd really like to have them in my hands dub/sub'ed.

I'm like DustoMan and have all the DVDs that Viz released. Since Viz has already dubbed all of the episodes, I wish they could do some sort of limited edition release. I would be willing to pay a premium price to complete the DVD set.

I'm excited about finally getting to watch Hikaru no Go Episodes 46-75 dubbed.

But as for MAR.....

"The complete series for MÄR (Episodes 1-52)"

MAR Episode 52 is not the end of the anime, they still need to DUB Episodes 53-102.

The part of this article that says MAR and Hikaru No Go will also be available on PSN is incorrect. All that is on PSN is MAR. Hikaru No Go  is nowhere to be found.

For those who are waiting for a DVD collection, it is most likely pointless. It is cheaper for them to just release them digitally, which is why they are doing so in the first place. In the end, the price will be cheaper than actually buying DVDs, since DVDs are usually 15-20 for single discs, which contain a max of 5-6 episodes, most of the time. MAR is $103.48 exactly on PSN, since they don't use tax and Hikaru no Go is $149.25 exactly, since there is no tax on PSN. It would be 11.94 for 6 episodes, which is what would normally be on a DVD. If a DVD with this many episodes is sold, which would normally happen with Viz releases like this, it would be cheaper to get the episodes invidivually electronically than to buy a single volume DVD. If the old volumes are re-printed, they would be normal price, rather than the $3-5 the old copies, that may not work, would cost. Electronically downloaded files are guaranteed to work, unlike used copies for cheap prices and they would end up being cheaper to buy than re-printed DVDs, since it is doubtful that they would risk trying to make a boxset and it not sell enough to make their money back. It would be too risky for them, especially now with not as many new fans coming in due to less anime on TV in America.
