According to TV Guide, NBC has cast Masi Oka's (Hiro) real life father to play the same role on the hit show Heroes.

TV Guide writes, "As exclusively reported by TV Guide magazine, none other than George Takei has been cast as the father of Heroes' Star Trek-obsessed Hiro.

"It was one of those lightning-bolt ideas," series creator Tim Kring tells TV Guide. Adds Masi Oka, who plays Hiro, "This is absolutely brilliant! I just hope I get to say, 'Dad! Sulu is my hero, not you!'"

Heroes airs Mondays at 9ET/8CT.

Does this mean his character won't talk about Star Trek as a reference? I would imagine he will compare himself to Kirk one of these ep's.

Ummm...can someone cite a source for THIS quote:

"Masi Oka's real life father"

Because this is the first I've heard of Mr. Takei being Mr. Oka's father outside of the set of Heroes....

Soooo...is Takei his real father or did am I missing something?

But the idea of having Takei on the show is a nice bonus.

George Takei has been confirmed as Hiro's father on Heroes but he is not Masi Oka's father.

Takei is gay and has never had children.

As for the Trek referance there is no reasons for it to stop. There's been plenty of shows and movies who refered other shows and movies only to have their stars cameos as other characters later on.

My name is Earl has refered to Smokey and the bandit many times and had Burt Reynold guess star as a character other then himself.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was filled with Star Wars referances and had Carrie Fisher as a nun.

And those are only exampe among others.

Yyyyyeah. I'm not sure how Mania got the impression that Takei is Oka's dad. Here's the tvguide.com URL: http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=700012436 . It makes no claim of real-life paternity.

Yeah, Takei father thing is worded poorly above. What I found more interesting is that Oka , besides being an actor , also works as a programmer for ILM. That's really cool. here's a link to an article about that.

I must have read something wrong along the way, because I really thought he was his biological father. Sorry for the mix-up.

hmmm.

this site is just getting more and more behind the times and full of crap.

does anyone else think this is a bad idea? ok, so he is an iconic sci fi actor. so what? george takei cant act his way out of a paper bag. i will wait to make final judgement till i see him in the show, but this worries me. Heroes is the best show on TV and they dont need gimics to make the show better.

as long as takei gives a proper performance i wont have much trouble with it. sure hope he leaves his ego behind.

Karl (may I call you Karl?), it's not a biggie. I just read that and thought I missed something else.

Dawntreader, have you ever seen anything the Mr. Takei has made other than Star Trek? Trek was not know as the Shakespeare of television, ya know? Try "The Green Berets" from '68. Or, and here's a novel idea, watch these episodes and judge them on THEIR OWN MERITS....You said you were going to do this, but it seems obvious (to this reader, anyway) that you've made up your mind. If you EXPECT something to be bad, guess what.....
