It looks like the long wait for little Hobbit production is over, Lotr fans. Variety is reporting that preproduction is set to begin with "Team Hobbit" (Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh) starting on the scripting of Hobbit: Part I and the sequel in the next few days. Previous reports confirmed that Del Toro would get to work on the script alongside the original creators of the Lord of the Rings trilogy when he was entering the last days before Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters.

On another note, the team has already been in contact with certain actors whose characters are planned for the overall story.
Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum). Those are the ones confirmed by the trade. If the plan is to split the films and have the timeline explained to the beginning of the original trilogy, it's likely that Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Christopher Lee (Saruman), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) and some other former stars will also be invited back if they wish it. Del toro confirms below.

"We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."

The Hobbit: Part I will hit theaters sometime in winter 2010 while Part II will hit theaters in winter 2011.

The Hobbit was probably the first full book I read as a kid, so this is going to be great to actually see it. I just hope the title they have is a working title.

At least we can count on one good bit of news.... No matter what, George Lucas will have nothing to do with this set of prequels so our expectations will not be shot down and crushed.

Two things....

I'm REALLY curious where they're going with this, because Strider wasn't in the Hobbit, so I don't know where Viggo's going to fit in...

and

Where's Ian Holms' name? You can't tell The Hobbit without Bilbo, and you can't have Bilbo w/o Holms. Even the speculation part of the article didn't mention his name...

They are going to have to recast Ian Holmes, the dude is to old to playing Bilbo Baggins.

Agreed Hanso.

WarCry, I'm sure a little detail like that won't stop them! Besides, in some of the backstory included in Tolkein's notes there's plenty of stuff Aragorn was doing. If they take the two movies right up to the start of Fellowship, they can have him tracking Gollum through the Misty Woods (isn't that their name?) and to the very base of the Mts of Mordor. Legolas can easily show up when the elves take the dwarves hostage or during the Battle of the Five Armies. There's plenty of opportunities there.

Also, isn't the 2nd movie supposed to bridge the gap between the events of The Hobbit and the events in Fellowship? That would be an easy place to bring in other characters that weren't in The Hobbit book.
