The Hobbit Running Time

Shortest one yet

By Robert T. Trate     -

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug arrives December 13, 2013.
© New Line, Warner Bros.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, out today with 5 different Hobbit covers, Peter Jackson has revealed the running time of the first Hobbit film. For The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, "It's going to be about ten minutes shorter than 'Fellowship' was. So it's going to be officially our shortest Middle-Earth yet... [It] is about two hours and forty minutes at the moment." Jackson stated.
Of course little things like title sequences and end credits will add to the film’s length. Our curiosity doesn’t lie int he theatrical run time, but in how much will be added to the expanded edition Blu-ray/ DVD. With The Hobbit becoming three films will everything shot be used? We have complete faith in old PJ, its just we don’t want another bloated Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions with long drawn out dance sequences and chases that go on forever.

A film about a wandering midget lead by a sexually confused old man with a large stick?

Nah sounds like bad porn to me. "Bilbo this is called a Dildo. Dildo meet Bilbo, Bilbo meet my Dildo." And the hilarity ensues. :) Nothing good comes from a gay wizard with a large staff meeting a group of midgets with ADD.

 I can see it now.....The Lord of the Anal Rings, lol....

You can see it.  Try to find "Lord of the G-Strings."  It got air time on Skinemax years ago so it's softcore, but it is absolutely hilarious.  Bilbo is Dildo Saggins.  Gandolf is Smirnoff.  There's a bunch of other crazy stuff in there, too.

 Oh for gawds sake.  I loved LOTR.  I can't wait for the Hobbit.  But, if you are making THREE films, please, my sore ass asks you to please make it two hours.

Shorter?  Hell no!  The longer the better when it comes to these films.  Each extended version of LOTR is better than the theatrical so I don't mind the length as long as it deserves it.

@jetpackjesus - lmao!!!! Niiiiiiice....

 I watch TCM quite a bit and one of the things I notice is that one upon a time films of comparable length as LOTR had intermissions.  55 Days in Peking or The Agony and the Ecstasy actually stopped in the middle and gave moviegoers a chance to go to the bathroom, hit the concession stand, whatever.  It seemed to stop in the 1970's (I don't think the Godfather films had intermissions, but most of the time I've seen them they've been so chopped up with commercials that I can't be sure), but does anyone know why?
