For sometime we've known from a speculative point of view that some of the main stars would be returning to middle earth for The Hobbit prequels. Via third party conversations in the past, Hugo Weaving, Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Andy Serkis and numerous LOTR actors have all signaled their desires to return if their parts are written into the storyline. But now we have some official announcements straight from the director's mouth.

While talking to BBC Radio 5, director Guillermo del Toro has now officially confirmed that Weaving (Elrond), McKellen (Gandalf) and Serkis (Gollum) will be returning to the roles they played in the original trilogy. Click on the link to listen to the conversation.

Expect more returning stars to be announced as the preproduction moves forward for Warner Bros. and New Line.

The Hobbit: Part I will hit theaters December, 2011. The second part will hit theaters December, 2012.

The main thing I want to know is who will play Bilbo. And please don't add anything just to have some people make a gratuitous cameo.

Yay for the returns!

Has anyone offcially said that Ian Holm won't be back as Bilbo?

Wiseguy 6/12/2009 9:07:19 AM

I think that's pretty much a given. I think last week GDT said that they had the person they wanted for the role and that their people were talking but no announcement til a deal is reached. Holm is way too old and the fact that they were actively casting the role says it all.

I love the LOTR movies......bring them all on.

I'm with Wiseguy on hoping they don't write contrived scenes just so they can have people do cameos.  Especially  in the "There and Back Again" portion of the two movies.   I'm sure they'll shove Kate Blanchett at us in that one though.  Probably do a scene of the council, while Bilbo and co. are in Mirkwood.

please make this epic !! im counting on it im a big fan and make the dragon less cgi and more real!!

To make a ring *cough* of it, Holm could start a retelling of The Hobbit from the boat as they sail to the Grey Havens at the end of Return of the King... otherwise, I cannot fathom Holm being in this film. If they did that, they could even have Gandalf (the White) interrupt him when he starts to tell the wrong version of how he won the ring from Gollum, which would be an interesting nod to the original version of the book.  But I would be fine with no extra scenes at all.

Other than that, one of the only unforced or "easily forced" cameos might by Aragorn, but it couldn't be Viggo since the character would be much too young... I think.

I remember when Del Toro and Peter were first discussing actors, they both agreed that they wanted James McAvoy to play Bilbo. I wonder if that's who they're talking to. I think he would fit in pretty good. He's certainly a good actor whose been in some award type films and he's recently added action films to his resume. I liked him as Wesley Gibson and I actually like the Wanted film more than the comic. If McAvoy is the person they get, I'd be happy they got a good actor. McAvoy was awesome in Last King of Scotland. But I'll see The Hobbit no matter who they get. I trust Peter and Del Toro.

I haven't been keeping tabs on the development of 'The Hobbit' just so I don't get way too over anxious for the film....well at least no more than I already was once 'The Lord of The Rings' came out. But I just have to say I absolutely love the idea of James McAvoy playing Bilbo. He's a great rising actor. I'm pretty sure I have enjoyed his portrayal in every film I've seen of his.

Yes, cameos would be retarded. But I'm sure the newer fans of the series (mainly ones that became fans when the movies came out) would love to see returning characters, Aragorn especially, if not the others.

"make the dragon less cgi and more real" --- wtf, do you know of a dragon who is currently available to film some scenes?
