Hoeber Brothers Adapting DC's RED Comic

By: Jarrod Sarafin

The Hoeber brothers must be getting the hang of writing action-thrillers with colorful titles. Screenwriters Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber---who recently wrote the Kate Beckinsale thriller Whiteout---have been tapped to pen an adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC comic Red. The team was signed after Summit Entertainment picked up the rights to the property. Mega producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and longtime Di Bonaventura Pictures executive Mark Vahradian will produce the adaptation.

Plot Concept: The three-issue comic series, published in 2003, told the story of a former black-ops CIA agent now living a quiet life in retirement until the day a high-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his secret identity compromised and his love interest in danger, the man must reassemble his old team to figure out who is out to get them. The book was written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner.

How about DC hire someone to adapt some of their major COMIC titles. Nothing against Red. From what I understand its a great read. But I want my DC Movies D*mmit! Marvels slung out a bunch of movies in the past 10 years and all we've gotten in the past ten years is a Bats reboot and soon to be sequel, and a great Superman Donner/Elseworlds hybrid. And don't give me that V for Vendetta, Constantine, and Watchmen garbage either. Their not apart of the main division - their Vertigo. Wheres an awesome Hal Jordan Green Lantern with a John Stewart cameo/setup?... Wheres the Wonder Woman flick that Joel Silver was shooting his mouth off about?... What about Flash and Martian Manhunter movies. Heck I'll even take some news on that IN DEVELOPMENT HELL Teen Titans flick. Just give the fans something. Heck Marvels so established their setting up an Avengers movie in 3 more of their flicks (TIH included). I'm loosing faith in you DC/WB. While I have no doubt that Bale and Ledger will rule the summer, I want more than a powerless superhero as a flagship. Whats Singer up too regarding Man Of Steel? How about some news on that?

Good, for a second I thought it was a major motion picture about a rash.

You know Captain, Bats and Supes are really the best characters in DC and the other movies would probably not do nearly as well.

Of course other than those two characters I'm more of a marvel fan, so I guess I'm bia . . . no . . . can't . . . say it.

Oh and I think this sounds ok.

I agree with CaptainJack. Look, Spider-Man and The Hulk are really two of the biggest heroes in the Marvel U, but that didn't stop them from making Blade. Daredevil. Iron Man. Regardless of anyone's opinions of Blade or DD, the fact is, the movies did pretty good business. And, of course, there's X-Men and now, Wolverine. There's active development on Magneto, Ant-Man, Thor, Cap. There's a Punisher movie close to a final edit. What does DC have? Dark Knight releasing in a few weeks and Man of Steel being developed. Other than that, everything else is mentioned once then never heard from again until someone says (a year later), "Oh, I don't know what happened to that project." Shit, get the guy who did that Grayson short to make that movie. That short kicked ass. He garnered more excitement out of that 5-minute "trailer" than a year of development on Justice League 90210.

You guys are right. I've always been more of a Marvel fan with the fact that my top ten favorite heroes are mostly Marvel. But I do enjoy me some DC and would like to see this universe explode on the big screen the same way Marvel has. I really have to believe that WB is holding up the line on people wanting to move forward with these projects. I don't know what their beef is? It's probably money. WHAT ELSE?! It's kind of funny but DC has always done good with their cartoon content, but when it comes to movies... I dunno. If their leery about the lack of fans or a disinterest from AverageJoe about some of DC ancillary characters then they should have them make cameos in their bigger projects and if people like them than go for it. I thought it was cool that Smallville was incoporating other characters into their show. Even if their kind of teenie-bopper and over dramatic. SHIT AT LEAST IT'S SOMETHING!!! Warner Brothers you need to SHIT or get off the pot. And by that I mean, if you aren't going to use the rights to these characters then sell them and let somebody else do it... god damn...

fft5305 you're right. All the way through. Marvel has MADE these characters interesting. I mean turning Spider-Man into a movie was a no-brainer, but Blade? How many people remember that character? I mean I do because I'm a geek for that shit. I still remember reading about Morbius and the team of vampire hunters that were always after him. But Marvel did good and turned it into a successful trilogy. Gotta give'em props. And WB needs to take notes.

I've been a Marvel guy most of my life. I have no problem saying that I am biased. But Dc has some really, really good characters. They're just so afraid to push the button for some reason. I'm dying for a Green Lantern film, he's my third fave DC character and deserves some fucking respect.

At least J.Silver said that he is still working on a WW script.
Green Lantern and the Flash reportedly are in the procees of getting one.
We know Green Arrow already has one.
Captain Marvel I believe is almost ready.
So there is some progress apparently but they still need to go ahead and give the green light.

The problem is that they're always "working on a script" or "in the process of getting one." Green Arrow already has a script (the script formerly known as Supermax) and by all counts, it rocks. There's obviously interest in the character - every time he's on Smallville, the ratings jump. But they won't pull the trigger. Speaking of which, I forgot to mention Smallville in my above rant. I like it, but they should have ended it this past season. As long as they're drawing it out this season, they need to make some progress on the character. Clark's not all that different than he was in Season 1, he just knows more about his origins and knows how to use a few more powers. In any case, back to my tirade. The Rock has been talking for a year about playing Black Adam. Do they even have a script? Ryan Reynolds has been talking The Flash for even longer. There was a script for that one that supposedly kicked ass, too. Then it disappeared. You know what DC should do? Blatantly copy from the Marvel model. Take back the rights to all their properties. Hire Avi Arad (since he left Marvel). Hire talented directors (Nolan & Singer was a good start) with a history of taking their material seriously (Ang Lee may have been a misstep, but I applaud the guts it took for him to take on The Hulk and for Universal to hire him). Hire Actors (capital "A") who take the material seriously (it doesn't get much better than Norton & Downey). But most of all, MAKE THE F-IN' MOVIES!

(breathe.... breathe... in with the good... out with the bad...) Ok, I feel better.

I agree. Make a Flash movie already that doesn't have John Wesley Shipp in it. He sucks balls, although i did love that show. I also keep hearing rumours about Megan Gale being in a Wonder Woman movie, but that has never come about. She cant act though, so it would probably suck, but she looks the part.
