Hoffman Responds to Riddler Rumors

I think we've already established that Christopher Nolan is on vacation at the moment and there is absolutely no script for the third Batman installment other than what could be in his head, should he approve on a contract and return to direct the next film after the blockbuster The Dark Knight.

That's not stopping us from going around in circles with these rumors for actors possibly appearing as villains in the next sequel. Case in point is the frequent rumors of Johnny Depp up for the role of The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Penguin. Just when we think there's no point in talking about these rumors, co-star Michael Caine jokingly brings it up again after having a conversation with a Warner Bros. executive, who likely just made a comment based on the rumors. We've come full circle basically.

So, let's put to rest the Hoffman-Penguin rumor this morning. Maniac WolfmanX has passed along this bit of news, which has MTV once again bringing the subject up by asking Hoffman directly.

Is Hoffman interested?

No. He's a big comic book fan but like a collector, he'd rather watch the next installment than star in it.

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

“I’m such a fan of those movies,” related Hoffman. “Comic book movies in general I look forward to — I am a real cheerleader for them. I want them to do well because those are terrific stories. As a kid I was a big comic book collector. What [Nolan]’s doing is taking it in a whole other exciting great place. I’m more a fan, so the interest of being in it isn’t that great. It’s more the interest in wanting to see the next one. It’s probably better that way.”

When further pressed for his level of interest if Warner Bros. approached him about the role, Hoffman said, “I don’t know. I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it. I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest. [laughs]”

Shocker. I don't know why these rumors persist, when the director hasn't even signed yet and there's no script in place. I guess, like Mulder, people just want to believe.

If you were really a fan you would want to star in one, so fuck u with that bullshit. Screw Hoffman, Paul Giamatti or Ray Winstone should be cast for The Penguin if they end up using him which I doubt they will.

I do think they will use The Riddler since both Oldman & Caine have mentioned him.

"If you were really a fan you would want to star in one..."

Uh, no. If someone enjoys something as a hobby or pastime, why would they want to make it their WORK??? It's important to enjoy what you do for a living, but having joys outside of work is important too. Hell, even porn stars get tired of their jobs and lose their joy in sex on occasion! (GASP!)

Because they would get a chance at briging something to life that they are a fan of? Or they rather be involved with it rather than let someone fuck it up?

Peter Jackson enjoyed LOTR, was a fan of it, endedup making it his WORK and made LOTR on film and it kicked ass. So, if Hoffman was such a fan of comic book movies he wouldn't be ruling himself out of them, especially one helmed by Nolan. He'd be killing two birds with one stone, working in a comic book movie which he allegedly is a fan of and working with a good director which is something a lot actors do. They end up picking projects just to get a chance to work with a particular director. Why? Cause they are a fan of their work.
Hoffman ain't a fan no matter what he tries to say. Also, if I'm not mistaken he was dismissive of comic book films back when the Peguin rumors were circling about and he thought he was hot shit cause of Capote.

I think he'd pull a good Penguin, but what he's saying is bullshit. Just like everytime an actor gets cast as superhero all of a sudden that was their favorite superhero growing up.

OMG Hanso you are the man. I said the same shit to my friends about Paul Giamatti being the Penguin. After I saw shoot em up and the proformance he did as a bad guy. I was like yoooooooo this guy can be the Penguin. I really really hope they pick Paul Giamatti for that part. Straight up.

He could also be acting uninterested in order to increase his negotiating leverage if/when WB comes a knockin'.

YEAH I JUST HAPPEN TO BE WATCHING TV GUIDE NETWORK WHEN THEY SAID THIS HOCUS POCUS RUMOR. ALTHOUGH I'VE ALWAYS SAID JOHNNY DEPP WOULD BE A FANTASTIC RIDDLER. I HATE FALSE CRAP. WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST WAIT UNTIL NOLAN SAYS WHATS WHAT.
