Josh Holloway ("Lost") has been enlisted to join Tom Cruise's team in Mission: Impossible, Paramount Pictures' fourth theatrical adventure that's being served up as a reboot of the franchise in 2011. The cast also includes Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Vladimir Mashkov as well as Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, who's returning to their Luther and Benji roles, respectively. Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille) is making his live-action directorial debut with the production, based on a script by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec. J.J. Abrams is back as a producer.

While the story is being kept locked in a super secret vault at Abrams' Bad Robot HQ, HR reports that Holloway is set to play a member of the Impossible Mission Force. Mashkov was brought on board last week to play a Russian agent.

Mission: Impossible will strike theaters December 16, 2011.

Alright! This movie just went up a few notches in my book.

I'm glad to see Josh Holloway in a movie, especially this one. It might one saving grace from having to endure another typical merry-go-round ride that features Tom Cruise. I'm liking this reboot idea a lot more now.

 Sawyer FTW!!!

jfdavis 9/29/2010 5:18:31 AM

Typecasting is bad but the team definitely could use someone with Sawyer's abilities.

Other sites have discussed the villian being cast but it still hasn't been mentioned here. I find that odd...

How in the hell is this a reboot? It isn't starting over, in the contrary it's continuing its storyline with the same cast. The team is evolving but the franchise isn't being rebooted

Nice.  Maybe Ethan Hunt goes rouge like Mr. Phelps did in the first movie (still can't believe they did that), and this time they can let James Ford, er, I mean Sawyer, er, I mean LeFleur, er, I mean Josh Holloway take over.

Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to seeing Holloway in a major non-LOST role.  Best of luck, JH!

And yeah, Wise.  Surely this isn't a reboot, is it?  Has that term become so commonplace that it is now being used for every sequel, reboot or not?

Oh, and jfdavis, why do you say this is typecasting?  It gives no details about Holloway's character, so we don't know if it is Sawyer-esque or not.

Butchman 9/29/2010 7:28:18 AM

Wow, this cast is starting to heat up!!!

jfdavis 9/29/2010 8:18:23 AM

I don't know if he's Sawyer-esque or not. I was just commenting that a Sawyer-esque character would work pretty well.  (Well, the con artist part not the attitude...)

Its not a reboot, why are people thinking its one is beyond me
