Hollywood and Amazon Talk Downloads

Reuters reports "Amazon.com is in advanced talks with several major Hollywood studios about creating a service that allows consumers to download and copy movies and television programs," per sources familiar with the discussions.

The company is looking to create a service that would rival Apple's iTunes and include music along with film & TV shows from indie producers. So far rumors are going around that Amazon is close to making deals with Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal.

This would be a download to own service as opposed to Movielinks' download to rent.

Sounds cool! I'm behind pretty much whatever would kill Apple and their iTunes.

I’m interested in your dislike of Apple. Would you care to elaborate?

I'm a graphic designer / web designer. In high school and college, I was told time after time after time that Macs were the way to go. But, Macs have terrible construction and software. They frequently freeze or break down, and they have an remarkable knack for destroying portable hard drives- they are an unmitigated disaster.

BUT, since the creative industry has been brainwashed into thinking they must use Macs, Apple stays around. That and Bill Gates kept them afloat until they came up with a revolutionary idea of... an MP3 player! Oh wait, companies such as Archos already had those for several years before Apple...

Basically, my dislike for anything Apple is due to their stellar marketing campaigns that promote their second- or third-rate merchandise.

That, and the fact that they constantly lie to consumers. They said that the Mac OS and architecture was the best there was. Then, to improve, they went from a Mac OS to a Unix GUI shell in Mac OS-X. They said that was the best computer there was. Now, they are going from their IBM chips (which they claimed were much faster and better than Intel) to Intel chips. Steve Jobs now says that on Intel chips, Macs will run about three times faster than they used to. This admits a lie that he has been telling for decades.

I would add that getting support from Apple iTunes ranks right up there with trying to get support from Microsoft, with the exception that you can at least occassionally find out what you need on Microsoft's support website.

I downloaded one of the first TV shows iTunes had to offer, only to discover that they delivered the wrong episode. It tooks weeks and many frustrating emails to resolve it. Nor can I burn any TV episodes I download from iTunes onto a DVD to watch in a standard player.

Amazon won't have these support issues, and it sounds like they've already realized that users don't necessarily want to watch video on a tiny iPlod.

coldhardtruth & phillipej,
Thank you both for your comments I've been a P.C. forever and always wondered the difference between Mac's and P.C.'s. I have a relative who is a graphic designer/artest who has nothing but good things about Mac. All I can say is I buy from Amazon and I can't live without my nano. So personally I got good things to say about both buy my education on Apple is Strictly limited to itunes and The ipod. So once again thank you both for the info.
