We have one returning Lord of the Rings star being confirmed and one incoming Hobbit star leaving the production early this weekend. On the same holiday weekend where Peter Jackson has noted via his facebook page that Rob Kazinsky (plays Fili) has left the production for personal reasons, director Peter Jackson has once again confirmed that Ian Holm will be returning to the role of Bilbo.

Here's what Jackson had to say on Kazinsky exiting the role of Fili in The Hobbit.

I am sad to report that Rob Kazinsky, who was cast in the role of Fili, is having to leave The Hobbit and return home, for personal reasons. Rob has been terrific to work with and his enthusiasm and infectious sense of humour will be missed by all of us. I should say that Rob's departure will not affect ongoing filming of The Hobbit, nor will it impact work done to date, as we had yet to film much of Fili's storyline. At the moment we are shooting scenes featuring Bilbo without the Dwarves, which will give us time to find a new Fili. I'll keep everyone posted with updates as they come.

The director, New Line and the trades revealed Holm's return for the The Hobbit and its sequel at the beginning of the year, with news that the returning star will play an older version of the character to possibly serve as a bookmark to the two-part adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien tale.

This latest Holm confirmation seems to be coming because of Jackson's recent 10 minute video blog from the set (the first of many to come) in which fans wondered whether Holm was doing the voiceover towards the end of the clip. The helmer has confirmed that the voice was in fact Martin Freeman, who will be playing the younger version of Bilbo Baggins in the films.

One comment that came up from the recent video blog was the Bilbo voice at the end—many of you assumed it was Sir Ian Holm. Whilst Ian will be returning as the older Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, that recording was actually Martin Freeman's voice, taken from a script read through we recorded when the cast first arrived. I have to admit, I wasn't sure who it was when I first heard it, either. Cheers, Peter J

The two-part adventure will also star Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, James Nesbitt, Adam Brown, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Ken Stott, Sylvester McCoy, Mikael Persbrandt, Ryan Gage, Jed Brophy, William Kircher, Saoirse Ronan and Bret McKenzie. Jackson returns with 3D cameras, based on a screenplay he wrote with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro.

The Hobbit will hit 3D/2D theaters December 2012.

Thanks to Pendragon0 and Calibur454 for the submission.

 Cool.  Can't wait.

Wow, at the time I thought it was Freeman but listening to it again, it really does sound like Ian Holm.

Fantastic!

Doesn't sound at all like Freeman, very husky, sounds more like Holm...

I knew it was Martin Freeman at the end of that blog. I know his voice from Sir Ian Holm's. I'm glad Holm is back. :D

Great news but I think most at least I did assumed this was the case. Maybe at the beginning and end of the two parter as Frodo begins to tell the tale. Still great news because some of these guys are up there in age

I read a note Peter Jackson put on Facebook that the actor playing Fili had to drop out for personal reasons.  He assured everybody that it wouldn't hurt the filming schedule, but gotta say I'm curious as to why he had to excuse himself from production.

Nice way to tie together all the films.  Glad Jackson is the man making this film.  Just appropriate.  I know this is a big "no no" for LOTR fans, but I prefer the Hobbit.  I like that it is self contained and is more family friendly (not to mention it doesn't have eight endings and scenes of Hobbits starring deep into eachother's eyes for uncomfortable amounts of time.)

Although, I hate to say this, but I'd prefer the Hobbit to be two films and the second one not be a "bridge" film. I don't like sitting in my seat for 3 plus hours.  I know, I'm not a die hard...I get major butt lag. I recall watching Jackson's King Kong and all I could think was "When is this damn monkey going to die?"

Wiseguy 4/24/2011 4:45:57 PM

LOL Inner, all I recall with King Kong was hoping it would never end same for the first two LOTR. Return of the King had so many endings it seemed that I actually wanted that to end by the time it was over :)

I love LOTR, but I also LOVE Randal's rant about it in Clerks 2.  "All those movies had was bunch of walking!  Even the f*cking TREES walked!"  LOL.  I wonder if anybody who has issues with the length of Peter Jackson's movies are the same ones who gave me crap for disliking the length and misleading title of Funny People?
