Hossein Maini to pen "The Subtle Knife"

According to Variety, New Line has hired Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove) to pen The Subtle Knife, the second part of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series.

The first book of the series, The Golden Compass, is currently being filmed for a release later this year and stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green.

New Line president Toby Emmerich said that the hiring represents a serious commitment toward the second installment, but that it is still dependent on the box office performance of the first film.  Emmerich has stated in the past that they plan to shoot all three books in the trilogy.

In The Subtle Knife, Pullman introduces the character of a 12-year-old boy who has learned the art of invisibility and is seeking his missing father when he encounters a vanishing cat and joins forces with Lyra Belacqua.

KJ's Take:  I have been keeping my eye on this trilogy ever since it was first announced.  On one hand, nothing that I have seen thus far regarding casting and the like has really interested me.  On the other hand, the plot sounds enticing and New Line really thinks they have a mega hit on their hands.

I personally am excited to see a trailer, which could in turn really make me anxious for the film or turn me off from it completely!

Read the books. You really, really, REALLY won't regret it.
Preferably before Hollywood craps all over them.

The books are the main reason I want to see the movie. I know that sounds like a stupidly obvious statement, but I don't mean it in the typical way. I'm really interested in how Hollywood is going to handle the anti-religion aspect. I assume they're just going to ruin it all, but I really want to see how they'll do that. And if they pull it off, well then we'll all be in for a treat.
