A plan to bring the classic Hot Wheels brand on to the silver screen has been in the works for a few years now and it looks like those tires are gaining traction within Hollywood. Variety reports the development is moving forward though it has nothing to do with any recent toy-to-movie blockbuster. You Maniacs are an intelligent group of comrades so we bet you can guess where the resurgence of interest is coming from. That's right, the recent renewed success of Universal's Fast & Furious franchise.

With Fast Five pulling in $587.0 million worldwide so far this summer, the folks at Legendary Pictures believe they can produce a Hot Wheels feature film which appeals to the same type of audience. The trade reports the plan is to produce a film based on "edgier fare" rather than the children's demographic that plays with the toys.

Legendary is in the process of acquiring rights to the best-selling Mattel toy brand at the moment and hopes to have development launched very shortly.

Thoughts? Sound off below.

Look, I played with Hot Wheels all the time when I was kid.  I still have hundreds of dollars worth of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars in my attic.  But a movie?

Anything for Holltwood to make money, right? First it was an absurd idea to try and make a movie based on the childrens' toy Strech Armstrong and now Hollywood is going to try to make a movie based on the Hot Wheels?  Not necessarily a good idea but, of course, what else can you expect from the "brainiacs" in Hollywood.

I'm just waiting for the "My Buddy and Me" feature film....

Oh wait - that was JJ Abrams "Star Trek"

Considering that board games like Monopoly, Battleship, and Ouiji are being made into films, is anyone really that surprised that toylines are now being used as the inspiration of a film?  At least Hot Wheels will be a heist-based film which is sort of logical for the toys, unlike Battleship which will be a naval war film against an invading alien force.

Uhhhh, yeah, okaaaay. How is this supposed to be a movie?

If they base it on Battle Force Five I'm all in. I dig that toon.

You know what, I'll be honest, I'll probably see this regardless of what's based on. But Battle Force Five would be a hoot, it would be an expensive production with new worlds and lions and crocs driving cars.  Yeah I'd see that

Wasn't it McG that was trying to make this film a few years back? I would not mind seeing him make a kick-ass movie about fast cars.....word....I LOVE a good car movie.

krathwardroid 6/17/2011 3:39:50 PM
